Lame take that it's weird, he deserves the #1 for coming back as a senior with his production this past season. He will surpass that in 2020.

The only reciever on the roster that could bid for #1 besides Nico is Bell.

If we are going to put tradition in our mouth's, the #1 jersey was our best wide receiver in years past. (Seems we've lost that tradition)

How long has it been since we have had a wide receiver wear the #1 that deserved it?

"The only reciever on the roster that could bid for #1 besides Nico is Bell."

This is true.  I love Bell - easily the most underrated 'croot we've seen in these here parts in decades.  He's a game changer, and a clear candidate for best WR on the team.  But (and there's always a 'but', right?), he needs to make catches on plays like PSU and the 3rd&9 agaisnt Bama where he stepped out.  There are others that he just missed, also - though Shea could be fairly blamed (and should be) for most of them.  Until he starts grabbing those few types of passes, Nico is a clear #1 over him.  I'm looking forward, though, to Nico taking two with him, and Bell being open everywhere on the field.  With Jackson, Sainristill, and Evans between those two, my Gawd...

Hope springs anew each year!

Let's first make sure that BRAYLON EDWARDS would be OK with the idea.

Seriously, Ambry Thomas is the only #1 listed on the roster, so it would be easy for Nico to take it, too.

If I remember correctly we were penalized in a game during the Rich-Rod era for 2 players being on the field with the same number.  I don't remember the game or circumstances, but it was such an odd penalty that it has been trapped in my mind for years.

I would put him in the Darboh/Greg Matthews/Adrian Arrington group of very talented guys who all made memorable plays, but just didn't quite feel like "big time" receivers who could consistently take over a game against good teams.

Funchess probably deserved it based on ability, but had injuries and played on bad teams, so he never had the numbers.

Junior Hemingway seems like he would have been a good #1, especially with some of the things he did in 2011.

Greg Matthews' best year had 400 yards receiving and 2 TDs. He had another year with 3 TDs.

Arrington's was 882 with 8 TDs.

Hemingway peaked at 699 with 4 TDs.

Darboh had 826 (7 TDs) and another 700+ season.

We remember Hemingway because of his jump ball catches. Matthews shouldn't be in the same conversation as the other 3, especially Darboh and Arrington.

He's earned it and who knows, it may bring some sense of pride back to Michigan Football.

Either way he should be in for a huge year ?‍♂️〽️

Absolutely--he's more than earned it.

I get the argument that others made back when we unretired all the numbers that it makes it harder to make a new number memorable. I agree for all other numbers. But the #1 is too cool to pass up.
