Neat Harbaugh post game at Kinnick story

Submitted by MaizenBlue93 on October 1st, 2022 at 8:28 PM

I stayed long enough post game to catch the team slowly leave the locker room. There was probably about 1000 of us. Eventually Harbaugh came out and of course everyone stormed him wanting autographs and photos.

Whoever was walking with him grabbed him and said he could get him an alternate exit to avoid the fans, but instead of doing that he proceeded to sign every autograph and take every picture.

I've been around Harbaugh several times, but I've never seen him anywhere near this happy before. He had a smile that could light up a town and was gleaming with positive energy the entire time.

That's a long time to wait to even some scores.  I think we all know that Jim keeps tabs on all that shit.  And it probably has a LOT to do with Chuck Long.  Another shit bust of draft pick from the Lions.

By all measures Harbs had (has) a way more accomplished career as a player & coach than Long ever did.  Long is currently corching in the XFL.  Both were Heisman finalists.

Here's the kicker.  Harbs was coaching University of San Diego and somehow put them on a map of some kind for the 1st time ever.  A DII school.  USD is a tiny Catholic school with maybe a 5K enrollment but plenty of $$$.  San Diego State is literally 8 miles down the freeway with probably a 40K enrolloment.  SDSU never even interviewed Harbs.  At the time he had a couple kids in local high school (Coronado).  I can almost guarantee he would have jumped at the SDSU job.  But they hired........Chuck Long.  Then fired him a couple years later when Harbs was then at Stanford.

The man loves football, everything about it. Playing it, teaching others how to play it, and he loves when the guys he teaches - play it well enough to win. It is a source of joy for him.

Could not be happier for our coach, nor happier that he is our coach.

Met him many years ago after a Bears-Lions game at the Silverdome. He signed everything and answered every question, including mine about Elvis Grbac.

Nobody is more perfect for the job than Harbaugh, love Jim and where this program is headed. It’s fun seeing this team grow and hopefully grow enough to have a chance at beating the nuts in Columbus, we have a lot of work to do!

This is awesome!  I know it was a big win, but I'm wondering now if it was bigger than we thought?  I wonder if he was wondering about where his team was, and now has a better idea.  I remember last year there was a point where he seemed to relax somewhat once he learned how good his team was.  Hopefully this was that point.

Coaches just have different perspectives. Fans want perfect games...coaches want wins.

It becomes dangerous at times because sometimes you win and think you're something you're not (I'm thinking about those Hoke wins when we'd look terrible and beat shitty teams by a FG and Hoke would act like we were crazy for thinking Northwestern shouldn't always come down to a 4th down stop).

So there is a balance, but this was a great win.

Some things to clean up, this performance doesn't put you at a level where you're CFP ready, but it's baby steps.

Klatt had a great observation. This game felt a lot like the game @Wisconsin did last year. I thought the same. That game wasn't clean (that drive to end the 2nd quarter still pisses me off), but it was a hard road win.

The PSU game will likely feel like @Nebraska. Just survive and get to your bye week. Win that, rest up...and you've got another shot at Sparty as you try to run the table before taking on the Buckeyes.

As I say that out loud...this IU game is "bigger" than I thought. (Bigger in terms of providing an indication on where this team is - not bigger in the sense of, a huge test).

We need to look good versus IU. This needs to be a comfortable win, where we execute at a high level.

Because when we play PSU, like I said, that is at Nebraska 2021. Just win. If Rod Moore has to rip the ball from Clifford in the 4th quarter to set up a game winning FG, so be it. Win, get to the bye, rest. That's all that matters. Anything more is gravy.

So you're not going to learn anything from the PSU game (if it's as described). IU needs to be a good clean win. It can't be a Hoke win.

It's a chance to show that you can "win ugly" in the tough games (like @Iowa)...but you can still put away the ones you should put away.

Let's not play games next week. Go win comfortably and show improvement as you build towards another B1G Championship.

The same Indiana team about to lose to Nebraska tho.  And with FG wins over Illinois and W. Kentucky.

Fear level: 2.  It's like opening the pickle jar where you just know, no matter how you scheme it up, you'll spill some pickle juice on the counter by compressing the liquid down while grabbing that first pickle.

While we're all bitching about dumb shit, Harbaugh knows how hard it is to win on the road at Kinnick.

Also, it looked like an absolutely BEAUTIFUL day.

Knowing he’s got the people who wanted him fired a little more than a year ago eating out of the palm of his hand…..

Harbaugh is a genuinely good dude, I’m sure he enjoys this experience, but you can’t tell me that isn’t at least subliminally on his mind.

The whole fired thing was always ridiculous. You don't fire a coach, pay all that money, when you don't have a pretty clear option to get better.

It's not that Harbaugh didn't deserve criticism. He did.

He deserved the pay cut, too. Performance matters.

But Michigan never had a better option. If you thought he was the 10th best coach in the country...we weren't getting any in the Top 9 (nor were we getting 10-15).

You don't fire Jim Harbaugh for Matt Campbell, lol. That is asinine.

You'd have to go throw $12.5M at Lincoln Riley or Dave Aranda...something crazy, and I don't know if either is better (I don't think they are). You weren't getting Saban, Smart, Dabo...fuck Ryan Day, Urban Meyer and Brian Kelly. Luke Fickell wasn't ever coming and he's not an upgrade.

You never had a better option. Matt Rhule? LOL, stop it.

Harbaugh is a Michigan Man, he's been on the cusp, he's been to a Super Bowl, he restored Michigan from the depths of Rich Rod. The only thing you can do is try to give him every resource possible to win.

Anything different is a waste of time and money.

But that's rarely how it works. At least ... sometimes there are good coaches that aren't (yet) famous. Bo Schembechler came from Miami of Ohio. Jim Tressel came from Youngstown State. Neither one would have made a list of "Top 10 Coaches in the Country" when they were hired.

In other words ... the fact that we don't know someone better doesn't mean a professionally conducted search can't find someone who's ready for prime time.

(But I'm also damned glad they didn't fire Harbaugh, and I'm delighted he's our coach).

Save the Michigan Man crap for the payout to Anderson's victims. This was a win and not an easy one. Hoke followed Rich Rod not Harbaugh. Letters earned under RR are Block M s just like the ones handed out by Yost. What would Denard do?

It is about the game. That is why Harbaugh lingered. I'd have to ask him to be sure. If we did he would answer. "Who's got it better than us?" Strangely he says this in defeat as well, but he doesn't linger there.

I agree it is another level, and that it wasn't needed, but I didn't do any of that. You take Michigan warts and all. You don't snub the RR and Hoke players for the "winners". There's band wagon and there's smug Michigan men. Jim is not smug. Denard was on the sideline. Who's the 3 percenter here? They are greater than 3 and they drive a fast train.

(Some of us still have our reservations about certain aspects, just as we would with almost any coach. No coach is unimpeachable, after all, and except for maybe Saban and Belichik, it's pretty easy to identify weaknesses with any of them. But when major critiques center around certain results in certain games and certain achievements, and then those things are accomplished, certain critics can either accept that they were at least significantly incorrect or go sulk in a corner. And let me tell you that I was too delighted last November to go sulk anywhere.)

I don't think Harbaugh is glad-handing for show. He is a genuine guy. Different, but likeable and real. Perhaps he is more gregarious when he is in a good mood after a big road win... and really, who wouldn't be? But I think he's doing that because he wants to.

Harbaugh is not greater than football. Fans who stuck around are football. He took the road less traveled because he believes in the game.

He would be the first to tell you how lucky he has been. He played with others who haven't been as fortunate, some who suffered through and still.

Jim has issues but not today please.

Beat Indiana if you must, but give a dog his day. Judge the game not his choice of friends and trusted agents.

And while we are at it... Beat Indiana! and Go Blue!

He should feel a lot less pressure this year after winning the Big Ten, his visit to the Vikings reminded him that the grass isn't greener in the pros, and he's got a top 5 team right now.  Life should be pretty good for him at the moment.

Beat PSU and play a good game against OSU (win or lose), we're probably playoff bound.

Obviously would love to beat OSU in the Shoe, but wouldn't mind beating them in a rematch for the national title.

Ehhhh I doubt it. With how weak our schedule is, we’re almost certainly going to have to beat OSU to make the playoff.

The SEC is already guaranteed a spot. They could very well get two depending on how Georgia and Alabama fare the rest of the way this season. Clemson has already passed its two toughest tests on the schedule. Even if they lose one, as long as they win the ACC they’re in. USC will get priority over an 11-1 Michigan as long as they win the PAC-12 and lose no more than once, which it looks like will be the case.

There would have to be a lot of chaos elsewhere for Michigan to make it in at 11-1. In a few years when it expands to 12 teams? They’re absolutely in. But now? I doubt it.

Georgia looks nothing like the #1 team after tonight's game.  It took almost 60 minutes to get a lead on a 2-2 Missouri team.  There was nothing good about Georgia.  Alabama is your new #1.  I'll be interested to see where they slot Georgia now.  If the voters had any sense they'd drop them to #4 to create a top four of Alabama, OSU, Michigan and Georgia.  But SEC bias would probably make it Alabama, Georgia, OSU, Michigan.
