Marcus Stokes gets HBCU offer after having offers pulled for using N word

Submitted by wildbackdunesman on January 27th, 2023 at 2:10 PM

Marcus Stokes is a white 4 star QB out of Florida that was filmed using the N word. He claimed he was just singing to a rap song and meant no ill will towards anyone.  However, big schools withdrew their offers. He had been committed to the Florida Gators and before that Penn State.

However, he will still play football in college and perhaps at an unlikely place. Albany State, a Division 2 historically black college has offered him a scholarship. He hasn't committed to them yet, as he has another Division 2 offer, but it sounds like he is seriously considering it.

That is nice of Albany State to give him a 2nd chance to make ammends. If he accepts, I doubt they get lots of 4 star recruits.

Turns out that what musicians do to entertain people isn't the same as what colleges want as the face of a multimillion dollar program. Is that a surprise?

"Being cancelled" isn't the same as "losing the opportunity for a very visible position for which there is lots of competition."

Gary Coleman was cute kid but had a horrible life - formed the basis of a fictional story "Child Star". Being a kid star made a lot of kids happy but often these kids were really abused.

And the recent memoir by Jennette McCurdy "I'm Glad My Mom Died"  is another real life example

OT - but many here either grew up with these kids on TV or had family and offspring who adored them.

Wait, what? If he was really singing lyrics from a rap song then WTF does he have to apologize for? I’m thinking that was his attempt at a free pass. Otherwise, it doesn’t make sense…

I sincerely hope this kid gets a second chance. As a black man, I can definitely say that there a lot bigger things for me to worry about than some white high school kids singing along with rap lyrics.

But I followed this story from the beginning and its pretty clear that this kid was recruited over after Florida got commits from 2023 QB Jaden Rashada and 2024 5* QB DJ Lagway. He probably would have landed somewhere else, but the "story" got picked up by one of the right-leaning tabloids trying to push a narrative about him being "cancelled" (Florida doesnt give any official reason for rescinding his offer).

This essentially became a self-fulfillng prophesy since now every search of the kid's name pulls up a bunch of articles with "N* word" in the title. Even though he has long since deleted the video and apologized, this kid is going to be stuck with some bad google results for a pretty long time.

I appreciate your statement outside of the unnecessary "right-leaning" association.

Quick search shows mainstream outlets saying the same thing:

https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/marcus-stokes-former-florida-qb-commit-whose-scholarship-was-pulled-due-to-racial-slur-gets-hbcu-offer/

Sure, it was a lightning rod for conservative pundits but the MSM also reported the same and continues to do so (posted Jan 25, 2023).

The NY Post first "broke" the story three months ago, and were the ones who originally pushed the unsubstantiated claim that Florida rescinded their scholarship offer due to the content of video (even though Florida and its coaches have never given any public statement about their reasons for rescinding the offer):

https://nypost.com/2022/11/21/florida-yanks-top-qb-prospect-marcus-stokes-scholarship-after-rapping-n-word-in-video/

Dozens of media outlets have republished the story with the same lazy, regurgiated headline since then, but the whole story was basically manufactured by the NY Post.

Yep.  Shit changes.   Everything might be recorded and on social media these days.
What is expected of teens and young adults is also different these days, specifically one that may become the face of a multimillion dollar revenue machine D1 cfb program - with brands, NIL, mega boosters, and 24-7 media coverage …not to mention the 70% black teammates you would need to win over from day 1 at the most important position/leader of the team.

with greater opportunity comes greater responsibility…may seem unfairly harsh to some, but that’s the reality.

You aren't wrong. Just like when celebrities complain about the overbearing press, but depend on that same press coverage to increase their profile, and thus their wages. Same thing for these kids. The tool they are using to get ahead can also do put him in D2.

Like most older people, I have no sympathy for younger people who think they have it so hard compared to us, when it's quite obviously untrue my any measure. But the one thing I feel bad for younger people is their mistakes may never be forgotten. The dumb things us kids did back in the day are only remembered inside our heads.

Unless you’re from the Greatest Generation, then by what measure?

Compared to Zoomers & Millennials (the post-1980s generations), for Silent Gen, Baby Boomers, and Gen X:

  • Capital was cheaper
  • Quality higher education was more accessible & affordable
  • High-paying jobs were easier to get
  • Workplaces were more likely to promote from within
  • Jobs provided more vacation time and better benefits for less work
  • Housing was vastly more affordable
  • Etc.

so, uh, whachu talkin bout?

I certainly never said the N word when rapping along with the artists mentioned in this thread and as far as I know none of my other white friends or teammates did either.

Im surprised how many people on here are like, “oh NWA was on in the locker room so you’re gonna rap along and say the word” uh. Nope. Not in the locker rooms I was in. Starting in 7th grade football and going through college everybody knew who could use what words. It was not up for debate. We had liberal and conservatives, black, white, Christian, Jewish, and non.

This is the world we live in....

The A&W Rootbeer Bear now is wearing pants.... because after 60 years of being an animated bear mascot, wearing a shirt and no pants..... someone thought it was inappropriate....

oh and don't even start with Dr. Suess, Baby its Cold Outside or the lady on the syrup bottle!!!!!

The A&W bear was a joke. Never was intended to be taken seriously. Fox News fell for it because they are always looking to stoke culture wars.

The lady on the syrup bottle was a portrayal of a house slave. Company was smart in changing that.

baby it’s cold outside is a sketchy ass song, but no more sketchy then half of what we hear these days, so that’s just personal choice.

Is there a loss of consent in Baby its Cold Outside? That may be modern culture reading in to something that wasn't in 1940s culture.

A lot of people interpret it based on the original performamce as the girl is flirting playing hard to get, she never once says she doesn't want to stay, but feels pressured by others as they aren't married and in the 1940s unmarried couples can't spend the night. The song ends with her laughing freely.

It was originally written and performed by a married couple who used it at the end of winter parties to shoo people outside.

Also, "what's in this drink" is not a date rape drug reference, but a 1940s saying that you use as an excuse when you are acting out of your typical character.

Watched W.A.P. Damn! Most music videos are beyond my pail. So I will let that video on its own.

Baby It's Cold Outside is cute, if we are looking at only from one point of view. Cringy and creepy from the other.

Personally speaking, I never realized how some of my actions could be seen by my female friends and family members until my wife pointed those out.

I first thought that "Baby It's Cold" was a little date-rapey when viewed through modern lens, and to be sure it kind of is, but I think that glosses over a lot of context.

Think back to when the song came out - back then, women in polite society generally didn't have much agency over their relationship choices.  One possible reading of the song is that the woman in the song couldn't really agree to the man's overture to stay over without looking like a slattern, so she (and he) have to go through the perfomative kabuki of her playing hard to get and him wearing down her defenses, when she probably is all too happy to spend the night.

That said, I don't have a problem with leaving it out of your Spotify X-mas playlist and in fact would generally encourage it because the "say what's in this drink" line has some ugly modern-day connotations that may not be the song's fault, but there's plenty of other lovely holiday music that can fill its slot. Especially "Last Christmas" and "All I Want for X-mas Is You" and yes I will die on this hill.

I have no issue with most of what you are saying, but to say women in polite society didn't have much agency is the exact opposite of how things were back then. Their rights as humans were certainly constrained, but in the mating game, they had all the power.

The whole point of that era was to give women every single excuse they could possibly need to say no, and only one to say yes. The unfortunate side effect of that was some men no longer felt bad about asking multiple times, as 'no' was expected and the only way to 'win' a 'yes' was to continue pursuit as long as possible.

Nevertheless, the idea was to put "yes" 100% into the woman's hands. The view was, men couldn't be expected to have control, so it was ceded to women.

Anytime someone says "read deeper" in reference to something like this it just means there were some randos on the internet with an opinion.  "People were offended by that too." Was it a lot of people or just a few?  Because finding a bad opinion on the internet to prove your point is not actually proving your point.  It's like the Wayfair/Child Trafficking story.  One rando had a creepy rando thought, posted it, and it somehow became a thing "People were offended by" if you "read deeper".

Personally I could care less what type of footwear an M and M candy chooses to wear or whether a cartoon bear chooses to bare his ass going pantless.   I do however find it interesting that people can suggest that changing what a cartoon character wears is somehow terribly offensive, while simultaneously suggesting that others should not be offended if the clothing choice stayed the same way it has always been.
