Yes. I really appreciate everything Chris did as a player and I enjoy that he is trying to create more Michigan football content but some of the things he says just really don’t seem accurate.

A couple weeks ago on his podcast, former Michigan RB Chris Howard said that Bush was definitely a step slower than last year. Howard was very critical of M’s new S&C program and coaches saying they put too much weight on Bush’s frame.

For the life of me I have no idea what Chris Howard is looking at when he has seen Bush play this year. There is nothing at all slower about Bush’s game.

As long as the ball is still moving. Which it clearly was.

Same comment watching Iowa try to run wide on 3rd & goal. Mason is such a better answer.

09/22/2018 - 10:25pm Watching Oregon at the goal…

Watching Oregon at the goal line snapping balls over their own head makes me happy for Harbaugh’s fb dive play from under center.

Aw. Don’t sell Nebraska short Judge. They’re a tremendous slouch!

This is satire right? Like The Onion? Shirley you cannot be serious!?

09/22/2018 - 8:14pm The package of plays with…

The package of plays with jet sweep action is largely successful. The sweeps themselves get 10-11 yards often enough. The fake jet sweep block to off-tackle worked for 7 yards with Tru Wilson last week, the fake jet sweep fake dive cross to DPJ was a 35 yd TD. Perhaps the dive you mentioned was just a missed block or perhaps showing that tendency keeps things like DPJ’s cross or other things open as the D has to play a bit more honest. I would think most teams have to respect all of Michigan’s dive plays after watching the RBs and Mason do serious work with them.

09/22/2018 - 8:11pm I just always thought he was…

I just always thought he was mentioned by name because he is the leader of the crew. “The O’Neill crew” usually means Michigan is gonna have a bad time with the officials.

Moleskyn,

were you in the stadium today? Besides the questionable officiating he couldn’t talk to the crowd. Called penalties on the kicking team and the offense that were, respectively on the receiving team and the defense. Then there was the whole face mask debacle.

09/21/2018 - 8:35pm AGP,

perhaps your goal is…

AGP,

perhaps your goal is the same as mine. I said “ice and wraps not S&C” so that people clearly knew what I meant when I said “trainer”. As a former NU athlete myself who redshirted due to injury I’m personally very familiar with the difference between a trainer and a strength coach but often people assume I mean strength coach when I say trainer. In this case there is a big difference between Rick Court dragging Jordan at Maryland and a trainer properly following protocol at NU.

09/21/2018 - 7:57pm Northwestern’s Rashidi…

Northwestern’s Rashidi Wheeler had a heart defect. The risks were known and he chose to play football. That is very different than coaches dragging kids around the field and behaving without regard for human life.

Lastly, if memory serves, Rashidi died at a captains practice while trainers (the guys with ice and wraps not S&C coaches) were present but no coaches.

Stuck in your head now too? Cool.

Oooh! Who got banned? Someone I wanted banned? Or someone I don’t even know? Also why the banning?

Feel free to ignore me as this is just blog gossip.

Space Coyote,

remembering the same stupid news story you reference I did cackle with knowing glee quietly to myself when Devin was explaining this last night and said the Mike and someone (possibly Spath?) said “could you please point out who you mean?” And Gardner walked up to the screen and pointed at the guy and said “this is the Mike”

09/20/2018 - 11:59pm He didn’t say that. He…

He didn’t say that. He simply said M was probably surprised because SMU hadn’t showed it before but shouldn’t have been too surprised because M runs it and most teams do. He then lamented that M is seemingly only about 50% successful with it because they put it on film more consistently than other teams.

09/20/2018 - 11:26pm Things I found interesting: …

Things I found interesting:

1. Devin described the difference between a gap blocking pass pro scheme and a slide protection. He thought part of the problem of free runners at Patterson might have been miscommunication between the RB and the C or the center calling a slide the wrong way because he misread the blitz.

2. His observation of big Proche TD against Hawkins was that David Long accidentally faked Hawkins out. Long’s receiver was very physical at the line and got Long off balance which might have appeared to Hawkins that Long was opening his hips to switch and cover Proche. Gardner said this is not something a defense would ever do but Hawkins may have 2nd guessed himself in the moment because Long is experienced and Hawkins is not. The video seems to support Gardner’s theory

3. Why teams run into stacked boxes?!? Gardner explained that first, M was trying to establish keys for the SMU defense to read later when M would screw with those keys. Additionally Gardner pointed out that protecting a lead in any game nearly always requires, at least for a play or two, running into a stacked box when everyone in the stadium knows you are doing it. One benefit of Harbaugh pounding it against SMU is he starts to get a feel for how the team might respond in those moments and is giving them the chance to live rep the challenge of blocking 8-9+ boxes. Same goes for short yardage situations. Harbaugh knows the FB dive is likely to work but they still need a couple changeups off that and need to be certain who they can trust in those moments. Let Evans/Wilson/Higdon or Thomas/DPJ show you who can be trusted on 4th down and short.

Lastly,  we reviewed the 4th down play where SMU quick pitched and beat everyone to the sideline. Gardner lamented that when M tries to run the running backs to the edge M has put it on film too much with too few adjustments to it so teams are likely to stop it more than SMU who (according to Devin) had never put that play on film prior to coming to Michigan.

I don’t think Nebraska is alone in that problem.

Jefferson 15 year aged at sea wheated Bourbon. Notes of salt for the hater tears but a smooth caramel finish for where M is ascending. Onward.

Former NU DB Jeff Backes (NOT M off lineman Jeff Backus) is an orthopedic surgeon. As is former M player Kyle Anderson.  There is someone else from Mich I am forgetting who is at Royal Oak Beaumont besides Anderson.

These articles are why MGoBlog is such a constant presence in my life. This, UFR, and other similar picture laden teaching of concepts are exactly what I’m so interested in after every game. There is so much more value to the conversations about expectations from these posts than just the hot take or cliche crowd.

Grumbler,

I’ve noticed several posters including myself do just as you describe and I don’t know that any of us have received any kind of response.

09/18/2018 - 8:44am Too bad it’s been so long…

Too bad it’s been so long since M has been to Pasadena. Remember all the cramps out there? Remember Wheatley setting the rushing record while getting treated multiple times for back spasms?

My wife, a physician, thinks more pregame prep of potassium and electrolytes would help. FWIW I have a buddy who is a long time MLB veteran and he told me that dehydration is the biggest risk every day and most of the players take significant steps to remain hydrated.

I suppose it’s just a thing in sports and not something that is a result of the M lifting program but maybe attributable to improper pregame prep.

09/17/2018 - 8:45pm UMBig11,

UMBig11,

What is different from your expectations that you are now so down on what this team will do? Did you think we would only win 1 rivalry game in August?

You mentioned something about “factions” forming. How do you feel about Coach Harbaugh and has that changed since before the season started?

I am also a season ticket holder and have gotten them in the past but did not this weekend.

His Dudeness,

After all these years I have a new respect for you. I hope your trips to M stadium get better and better.

Craig? Is that you?

09/17/2018 - 3:20pm That’s what I saw too…

That’s what I saw too. Michigan had two different looks before/after timeouts.

We used to get mad when Brady Hoke would come back from a timeout called by the defense with the same formation.

We also used to give Harbaugh credit for changing the package to get Dykes to burn timeouts so that he was out of timeouts and couldn’t challenge a key play later. Which paid off spectacularly with an unsportsmanlike penalty on Dykes.

Now we just say Harbaugh got outcoached by Coach X and ignore the above.

If you wondered where that OSU fan official was Line Judge yesterday you should check the comments on the main page article (hint: penalties on Michigan.)

You don’t think M dominated the line of scrimmage in the 3rd and 4th quarters? It very much looked that way to my untrained eyes.

09/14/2018 - 1:20pm Arb Lover,

this is a…

Arb Lover,

this is a ridiculously stupid thread and you should feel terrible.

I am a former athlete at Northwestern. Most off campus housing at NU is among the normal residents of Evanston. My 6 roommates and I were next to a family with two preteen kids. We had a great party house including a huge deck and a hot tub. Thus we partied a lot in the Fall. The cops showed up all the time. We maybe got 2 tickets in 3 years. Maybe. Mostly they came by, chatted, got a few people to leave, and told us to disperse then left. No citations for underage drinking were ever issued and nobody was ever close to being arrested. If you think we received preferential treatment, the sorority girls on the corner and frat guys directly behind us got the same deal for noise complaints. There were many complaints from the aforementioned family next door and the elder widow across the street.

This is very similar to what I experienced in Ann Arbor, Providence Rhode Island, East Lansing, Amherst Mass, and every other place I have been to an off campus party that got loud. Which is all of them.

Arb Lover, this makes me think you have never been to a college house party before.

Also for the record, I suspect Linda from Grand Blanc is THE KNOWLEDGE. But that would not bother me one bit. Unlike these other multiple account posters who I really wish would go away.

Linda!

I have been visiting whatever form this blog has been since 2007. How have I never seen you before today??? I just read your whole posting history. I wish you would post more. Fun fact about me: I married the first woman I ever met from Grand Blanc.

It mostly was.  One of their 2 scores was set up by terrible field position from a turnover and then a screen pass which negates Michigan’s Dline advantage. The other one was Lawerke scrambling which took more advantage of man coverage than it did any blocking at the line.

2011 Minnesota game was the first game I attended with my then girlfriend now wife and mother of my child. We went to see her friends at halftime and she felt bad that I missed a few plays in the 3Q (of a blowout!) she always got my passion/religion of M football.

Any update on the lineman transfer?

09/09/2018 - 7:33pm Since Harbaugh has been here…

Since Harbaugh has been here?

He subbed entire offensive lines in the following games just in 2016:

Hawaii, UCF, Penn St., Rutgers, Illinois, Maryland.

Thats about half the schedule. It was really just last year that he didn’t get many chances to sub an entire offensive line.

09/09/2018 - 6:20pm I’m too old to know the…

I’m too old to know the current good eats.

Mustard’s Last Stand directly across the parking lot from the stadium on Central st. Is a brat - dog - burger place with amazing nostalgia pictures. (Fun fact: that’s where I was the moment I found out Coach Walker died).

In the Omni Orrington (might have a different name now) there is a farm to table restaurant in the lobby that is healthy and good.

Othwrwise things have changed too much since I was last there to know the restaurants.

09/09/2018 - 5:38pm Hi B1G Winning,

Hi B1G Winning,

Northwestern alum here and former athlete. First, the stadium isn’t 1/3 Michigan fans. It’s 50% to 65% Michigan fans. Secondly, the obstructed view happens a few ways primarily that the stadium is a glorified high school stadium and so you are sitting very close to the field and not at all high up. As a result cameras that go up and down the sidelines on cranes can obstruct your view, many of the end zone seats can’t see across the field, like maybe to the 50 yard line and not beyond. My advice is to sit in the upper section below the press box but low in the upper section to avoid the beams that support the press box. So first 2-3 rows of upper section.

Ticket prices: I don’t know. As a student I always got in with student ID since my ex gf got a “student activities fee” passed in student government (cool story bro! Hey I don’t have many from NU so let me have that one)

hotels: in Evanston they are NOT 20 minutes from the stadium. Evanston isn’t that big. Maybe a 20 minute walk but seriously a 5 minute drive. Omni Orrington, Hilton Garden Inn, you should even check Air BNB (WendyK5 you in the business?). You will take longer walking from your parking spot to the stadium than driving from your hotel to the spot.  If you want to stay in Skokie or somewhere that direction they probably have more and cheaper rooms available.

If you stay in downtown Chicago take the purple line from Belmont up to the stadium that probably takes 45 minutes but more available rooms and you will be amongst a sea of Michigan faithful. You could also stay by Howard St. (north of Loyola) and get on the purple line there and take 20 minutes.

DRESS WARM!!!! IT WILL BE MISERABLE WEATHER! Because my entire life for 5 years was nothing but miserable awful weather and all of my subsequent visits back have set records for either rainfall or cold. Now, since I’m not going to the game it will probably be the best weather of all time.

09/09/2018 - 3:34pm Your post, which I otherwise…

Your post, which I otherwise agree with, assumes Brandon could get something like a coach firing correct. I’m not confident Brandon cared enough about anything other than hiring a “yes man” coach to be concerned about timing of a firing.
