Loins to hire Brad Holmes as next GM
January 14th, 2021 at 11:50 AM ^
Never heard of this guy, Rams did draft Aaron Donald though when the Lions drafted, *checks notes*, Eric Ebron. OOOOOF
January 14th, 2021 at 11:54 AM ^
IIRC, many mocks had Lions selecting Donald from Pitt or Zack Martin from ND and instead, the Lions super-lioned and selected a TE from UNC with suspect hands...what a franchise.
January 14th, 2021 at 12:01 PM ^
As I recall they had Suh at the time and had not decided whether they should re-sign him. So they let Suh walk and now they have neither one.
Edit: They also drafted Ansah the year before, and had Nick Fairley.
January 14th, 2021 at 12:38 PM ^
I don't think there was a plausible scenario where Suh resigns with the Lions.
EDIT: Re-sign would be the correct word, as pointed out below!
January 14th, 2021 at 12:42 PM ^
I beg to disagree - I was sure that Suh would resign from the Lions.
I will say that it was very unlikely for him to re-sign with the Lions.
January 14th, 2021 at 1:12 PM ^
The problem was that it was known that Suh would leave. The Lions screwed up twice. They should've drafted Donald knowing that Suh would probably leave and Fairley had motivation issues. The second screw up was not trading Suh.
They supersized their Lion-ness and went from a top 5-DL to the crap we have now.
January 14th, 2021 at 12:09 PM ^
Fuck Ebron
January 14th, 2021 at 4:42 PM ^
Would he allow that to happen?
January 14th, 2021 at 12:46 PM ^
Yeah but the Rams also drafted an all-time bust in Greg Robinson 2nd overall in the very same draft, which is even worse than the absolutely awful Ebron pick. Rams had one of the best and one of the worst first round picks of all-time in the same draft.
January 14th, 2021 at 1:54 PM ^
Well, this is an intimidating look...
January 14th, 2021 at 2:08 PM ^
Jeffrey Epstein?
January 14th, 2021 at 11:50 AM ^
Let's go Loins! I think this is the year the beat the Beagles in the Duper Bowl.
January 14th, 2021 at 11:50 AM ^
Gird your loins! A new GM!
January 14th, 2021 at 11:57 AM ^
Damn. I thought Dodds and Saleh was going to be it. But -- I am very excited they are hiring someone fresh.
January 14th, 2021 at 12:01 PM ^
I think most people did.
Holmes was going to get a GM job soon and had in fact also interviewed twice for the Falcons job, but I think this now sets up an offensive HC hire, maybe even Bevell.
January 14th, 2021 at 12:35 PM ^
It absolutely cannot be Bevell. Too attached to failure.
January 14th, 2021 at 1:13 PM ^
oh... it absolutely can.
see: Lions
January 14th, 2021 at 12:56 PM ^
Oh, God, not Bevell.
Bevelled
January 14th, 2021 at 1:08 PM ^
Arthur Smith. And since he is the son of the founder of Federal Express he certainly will not need the money.
January 14th, 2021 at 1:41 PM ^
Smith would be an interesting choice.
Most people think the Titans are a one man show with Henry, but Tannehill’s stats over the past 1.5 seasons (Mariota was the starter at first in 2019) are equally as impressive.
I also want to see how he does as a coach without Vrabel forcing him to go into his shell with ultra-conservative play calling, as was seen against Baltimore last weekend.
January 15th, 2021 at 12:06 AM ^
It would be interesting to see Tannehill's QBR off play-action vs. standard drops. In practice, every competent QB should be slightly better off play-action. In Tannehill's case, I would bet it's pretty significant given who he hands the ball too
January 14th, 2021 at 1:18 PM ^
Please no Bevell. I don't think he's a bad coach I just think you have to let the new GM bring in his guy. If not, and 2 or 3 years down the line we still stink then what do you do? We're stuck being half pregnant wondering if we should get rid of both the coach and the GM or keep the GM and let him bring in his own guy.
January 14th, 2021 at 12:48 PM ^
I’m good with it too as long as he keeps up the tradition of passing on really good players for guys who won’t be on the team in three years. Probably a good time to start interviewing for the next GM to replace Holmes in three years while they’re at it, too.
January 14th, 2021 at 11:58 AM ^
Interesting, the Lions do like their first time GMs instead of re-treads. I just wish they had done this a year ago when the Lions had the third pick in the draft.
January 14th, 2021 at 12:00 PM ^
The rebuild will definitely work this time. I can feel it deep within my gut. It's happening. Also, I've never heard of Brad Holmes.
January 14th, 2021 at 12:02 PM ^
I'll bet you a Millen dollars that Holmes does not work out in Detroit...
January 14th, 2021 at 1:05 PM ^
Yeah but how do your loins feel about it?
January 14th, 2021 at 12:12 PM ^
you've been here 2 weeks shy of a decade and you've never heard of brad holmes? maybe if you would cover yourself when you bootlegged you might have a better memory of the great, world-renowned, hottest name in show business, brad holmes.
(can someone please tell us who brad holmes is? any relation to larry holmes?)
January 14th, 2021 at 12:31 PM ^
Johnny Holmes' son.
January 14th, 2021 at 12:02 PM ^
The first good thing that comes to mind is that he's not out of the NE Patriots organization.
January 14th, 2021 at 12:05 PM ^
Can’t do worse than they have. Good luck
January 14th, 2021 at 12:16 PM ^
1. No retread hire. Good.
2. Among the players taken during his tenure as the Rams' director of college scouting were two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald, wide receiver Cooper Kupp, safety John Johnson III, linebacker Samson Ebukam, tight ends Tyler Higbee and Gerald Everett, running back Todd Gurley and quarterback Jared Goff. That's a good group of guys.
3. Not Bob Quinn.
I like it!
January 14th, 2021 at 12:40 PM ^
Thanks for the insightful info. I don't follow the NFL closely, so I honestly didn't know Brad Holmes' reputation. Looks like he has a keen eye for draftable talent.
January 14th, 2021 at 12:50 PM ^
Only 3 Rams draft picks since 2016 are no longer in the league. I think Quinn had 13 within the same timeframe.
January 14th, 2021 at 1:31 PM ^
"Looks like he has a keen eye for draftable talent."
No worries, the Lions will see to relieving him of that duty ASAP!
January 14th, 2021 at 1:51 PM ^
"3. Not Bob Quinn."
THIS IS MY FAVORITE PART!
January 14th, 2021 at 12:17 PM ^
Loins to hire Brad Holmes as next GM....what a dik move.
January 14th, 2021 at 1:00 PM ^
Hiring John Holmes would be a big dik move.
January 14th, 2021 at 12:18 PM ^
Based on the Lions' history I strongly suspect this will not work out and this poor guy will regret taking this job when his career reputation is in tatters five years from now. But hey, at least the guy will make good money to cushion the fall.
January 14th, 2021 at 12:38 PM ^
On the other hand, if he's the guy to turn the Loins around he'll be a legend in the NFL.
January 14th, 2021 at 1:12 PM ^
Who are these Lions you mention? This post is about the Loins
January 14th, 2021 at 1:35 PM ^
Best advice any Lions fan can give the new GM is to rent and not buy.
January 14th, 2021 at 12:20 PM ^
Damn. Really wanted Dodds.
January 14th, 2021 at 12:27 PM ^
Really wanted Kevin Colson. But oh well.
January 14th, 2021 at 12:40 PM ^
Really wanted Marion Cotillard, but I'm accustomed to disappointment.
January 14th, 2021 at 1:53 PM ^
Really wanted Marquis Colston
January 14th, 2021 at 2:18 PM ^
Really wanted Marquis De Sade
January 14th, 2021 at 12:29 PM ^
GM hires are alot harder to project than HC hires for fans, but I think I'm pretty happy with this. But I think this means we go with an experienced HC or Bevell.
January 14th, 2021 at 1:07 PM ^
That seems to be the take here, but why is that? Rookie GMs just don't want to hitch to a rookie coach for fear of failure?
January 14th, 2021 at 1:35 PM ^
I think part of it is their plan to keep Stafford. If they do, the Lions probably owe it to him to try and get back to the playoffs ASAP. Which tells me they'd lean toward Marvin Lewis, who has his criticisms but was a consistent contender for the playoffs. Or you hire Bevell so you don't have to implement a new system.
Lions may also be wary of an inexperienced GM take over a complete rebuild vs just worrying about injecting talent into the defense.
