[LOCKED] Billy Graham dead at 99

Submitted by UMProud on

Billy Graham died today at the age of 99.  In the years preceeding his retirement, Mr. Graham was an American cultural icon.  His work spanned decades and his influence was felt in the highest circles of American life.

"Graham spent six decades preaching on television and radio — principally on the Billy Graham Crusades, which he began in 1947. Thought his numerous sermons (and 34 books), Graham has said to have reached more than 200 million people throughout his lifetime of work. He retired in 2005.

His crusade ministry began in 1947 when he was just 29. Over the next 57 years, Graham conducted more than 400 crusades on six continents. His final crusade was held in 2005 when he was 86, over three days at New York’s Flushing Meadows Corona Park. More than 230,000 people attended.

He was an outspoken advocate for racial integration in the 1950s and ’60s, even working closely with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr."

MOD EDIT - Locking this. He's a famous figure and that's fine, but his fame touches two of the big taboos around here, which are religion and politics, and I am not sanitizing this thread just to have it flare up again. - LSA

9 out 10 our HS football players have no clue who Billy Graham was.  His last nationally televised sermon was what, 10, or 20 years before they were born?  Even the preachers he directly influenced like Pat Robertson or Jerry Farwell have mostly left the public eye.  There is no doubt he greatly influenced the evangelical movement of the late 20th century, but suggesting that players won't come to Michigan because some people object to his outdated views on some social issues is just silly.

Billy Graham has a peaceful way about him even when he was fired up.

Quick story, I heard a motivational speaker tell the story that some kid was at one of his Crusades down south back in the day and was back stage and said to someone: "Can you believe so many people would come out to hear one man speak?"  and the guy said to the boy, "God don't sponsor no flops".

Why post to MGoblog? If Ghandi died today would you have a problem posting his death on this blog. Billy Graham was equally influential spiritually and politically (he counseled every president during his ministry as well as Queen Elizabeth). He is a part of American History, like it or not, and a very positive part At that.

This probably can't go anywhere but south. It's a passing of a very influential person, but a person who was both religious and political, so this is probably not something to discuss here.

Yes!

Truth, by it's nature, is exclusive.

If someone hated the man, they simply didn't believe the same thing as he did.

Some people are exceptionally angry right now at a man that did nothing to them, nor whom they knew anythign about.  So move on, people...  and let people who knew him mourn his death without you having a problem with it.

listen dumbfuck, he hated jews (see the quotes all throughout this post), thought women belonged at home and only at home, recommended dropping nukes on vietnam, and said aids was god’s way of punishing gays.

if you read all that and think ‘solid dude’ then you are a piece of shit. i’d rather be a snowflake, whatever the fuck that is, than believe in your fairy tales
