I e-gree.

I just hope that if Harbaugh has no interest in the Michigan job that he publicly comes out and says it to finally shut these people up. It probably wont ever happen seeing as it will always be a solid chip in his back pocket as far as contract negotiations are concerned, but IMO he clearly doesn't want the job.

It was 100% his to have last time around and he chose the NFL. I don't buy the bullshit reports that he was "never offered the job."The only possible way he was never offered the job is on the technicality that he preemptively turned it down.

The thing that will keep Harbaugh away from these jobs is the fact that neither have a quarterback he can win with.  In addition, they both have bad ownership.  The only way I see this working out is if Harbaugh thinks he can coach at Michigan for three to four years until he sees a NFL job he really likes.  Either way, he is not our long term solution.

Let's not hire Harbaugh because he might use the Michigan job as a stepping stone. I would love for him to come here, stabalize the program, win us some championships and leave for the NFL. That would mean we finally have a successful program again and Harbaugh will probably have a replacement on staff(think David Shaw at Stanford).

that is something that kinda scares me about the Raiders, though... what if Mark has learned his lesson (unlike Mike Brown), looks at Jim as the epitome of the Al Davis philosophy and offers him complete and total control? Jim is basically the ideal Raiders head coach, he was very close to Davis and would probably relish the chance to shove it down the 49ers throat on a daily basis. The Raiders desperately need to start winning again to kick start any stadium deal, too.

If they offer the Niners the second overall pick and some cash, I doubt they stand in Harbaugh's way either.

Nobody is even asking him about the Michigan job because it isn't even a remote possibility.  Remember, it was Harbaugh that wanted to talk contract extension last July and the 49ers said they wanted to wait until the end of the season.  This is not something a guy who wants to come back to college would do.

The odds of Brandon imploding like that were next to zero.  Harbaugh had no idea that pizza boy was going to get shipped out of town like that.  Harbaugh was probably unbelievably pissed that he was passed over in 2010 for Brady Hoke of all people.  And rightfully so.  The idea that someone would want to hire Hoke instead of Harbaugh is almost unfathomable.

So much speculation, it all doesn't matter. Just wait and see who we get. NONE of the insides know a clue, and nobody knows anything. All their doing is saying something, and hoping they get lucky. Same thing for coaching search for Michigan. All insiders are saying names for coaching search, and none know anything. They are all just throwing out names and hoping they get the lucky guess.

That's not what insiders do.  They have access to information that the public don't, including which candidates Michigan will pursue the hardest.  They also know people that regularly keep in contact with guys like Harbaugh and Miles, so to say they don't have a clue is just incorrect.  They can't see the future, but their "guesses" are way more educated than anyone else's.

It seems like a lot of people are in the “Harbaugh or Bust” mentality, and I can’ say that I blame them, he really is the only sure fire grand slam coaching candidate out there. But…I remain pessimistic that he’s coming to Ann Arbor, for a guy that was one power outage away from winning the Super Bowl I can’t help but feel like there is unfinished business in the NFL. It appears that he has the upper hand in any negotiations about his future, he could flat out refuse to get traded to a crappy team, and hold out for a team with potential, or stay with SF. Correct me if I’m wrong but are coaching contracts the same as player contracts? For example, if the NY Jets traded for him when he flat out refused to work there how could they force him to honor his contract? While I would be thrilled if it happened, I remain skeptical that Jim is plotting his return. There are just way too many pieces, and unknown factors.

Harbaugh will have to approve the team he is traded to most likely.  Teams aren't going to trade for a coach who doesn't want to be there.  Oakland makes the most sense.  There is also talk if he leads SF to the playoffs this year he is getting an extension, with the injuries SF has had this season it's really a testament to how good of a job he has doen to have them still in the playoff hunt.

Sucks, but this is in no way good for the odds of him coming here.  I wasn't one of the believers from the start, but I'd say the chances are very small now.

On another note, I'm not even sure Harbaugh would have been the best man for the job, the NFL would come calling every single off season and he'd likely take an NFL job within 2 or 3 years. We need more stability than that.  Sure he is an incredible coach, but if he comes here and then leaves the program would be looking for their 5th HC in a decade.  That type of coaching carousel dooms programs to mediocrity for long periods.

We need a young up and coming coach who plans to stay at Michigan for 10 years.

Whether Harbaugh comes or not, I don't think he will string us along. We'll have a yes/no answer very shortly. If the answer is yes, will we be patient?

I really don't see issue some people seem to have with Les Miles and his age. If Les is still passionate about coaching I don't think his age should be that big of a deal. I would prefer Harbaugh like anybody else, but Les is a good  back up option with a track record of success if UM doesn't land Jim.

Edit: This commented was directed at Brody's posts earlier in the thread about not wanting Miles due to his age.

cool, why don't we hire Bill Snyder? Why hasn't anyone ever hired Bill Snyder? Could it have anything to do with the fact that he was in his late 50's when he completed his KSU turnaround and that he has unorthodox recruiting practices that wouldn't work at bigger schools? He's really an awful example if you're arguing for Les.

On Rivals' premium message board:

Harbaugh is not doing much talking, but we know - for a fact - that he has legitimate interest in the Michigan job.

He also stated that these NFL rumors/sources are all NFL guys, so take them FWTW, especially the Raiders, which is pretty non-sensical.

I'm willing to bet that NFL guys have a better take on what Harbaugh's agent is up to than guys who cover Michigan exclusively. Also, Balas has a much worse track record than Schefter or John Clayton, so I'll take his words with more salt than theirs.

I just love that people at the AD are spreading all this Harbaugh info to message board posters and Rivals guys but none of it has reached the ears of former Daily editor AND NFL guy Schefter. Weird how every alum is in the know except for the one who can crosscheck this stuff with the NFL rumor mill

Like guys that cover Michigan exclusively don't have any contacts that might know Jim Harbaugh personally?  Are you nuts?

Loose lips sink ships.  Harbaugh is massively disciplined.  If he wants to come here, he's not going to be mouthing off about it to ANYONE he doesn't trust.  Especially not the f'ing press.

If he wants to come here he WANTS TO BE FIRED.  Because then he gets his buyout.  If he has to walk away, he loses his cash.  If the Niners find out he is coming to Michigan, they will just not fire him and try to make him coach next season, knowing that he will be forced to quit and lose the cash.  So if he wants to come here, he is in a high-stakes game of chicken with Niners management, seeing who will blink first.  He's hoping they will fire him before he has to quit.  Niners management will do everything they can to piss him off first and get him to walk away.

if that is a factual assesment, he's also not going to tell Jamie Morris or John U. Bacon that he's hella interested in Michigan dewd. I think if Harbaugh is fired, that is a bad omen for us... it means he can have his pick of next job in the NFL. What's better for us is him being forced to pick between a few desperate teams he doesn't want to work for.

Harbaugh is a pro. He won't say anything to anyone. His agent, though, very well might. And agents are who most NFL insiders have their ins with... I don't see Sam Webb having those ins.

I found all that Jack Harbaugh talk pretty suspect. Wouldn't his loyalty go to Jim first? Why would he be talking publicly, or even secretly knowing that it would eventually go public?

4 years ago Adam Schefter was reporting to everyone that Harbaugh was taking the Michigan job. So it's not at all clear he has a direct line to what Harbaugh is thinking.

I imagine the truth is that Harbaugh has no idea what he will do. He's probably focused on making the playoffs and once the 49ers season is over, then he'll decide what to do.
