James Hudson to OT?

Submitted by Wolverinefan84 on

I didn't see this posted on the board, so apologies if already posted... Seeing that Sam Webb tweeted that James Hudson is making a position switch to OT: http://scout.com/college/michigan/Board/102410/Contents/Inside-the-Sub-…

I don't have an account so I can't read the article... Was just curious if anyone had seen this or has any info. To me, I was very excited to see Hudson on the DL, especially when we have a few other incoming freshman that project to be at OT, so I'm a little disappointed given the hype on Hudson on the DL. Thoughts?

I think it's a good move. My understanding is that Hudson is a really good player and he could get buried on defense, but has a good chance to make an impact early on offense. I wonder if Phil Paea is in the same situation?

wonder if they're thinking of moving him inside as well, given that Gary will probably eat up a huge number of reps at SDE the next two years. And agree that DIB and Jeter could move inside as well.

I think we have plenty of young guys on both lines not be too concerned about what this move means.  Yes, RT is very shaky this year, but there's no way they're making this move for this year.  This is not an indicator that this years RT situation is worse than we thought.

I also don't think it's a bad sign about the other OT recruits this year, because Filiaga always felt like an interior player, and probably at least one other one.  Remember that we didn't recruit any OGs last year.  A couple of those guys were inevitably going to move there.

Could this be a situation like Owenu last season when he played both OL and DL during the season? Or is the consensus this is a permanent move?

They are currently giving away a 7 day free trail.  Just sign up and read the article.  If anything you can read all of the Inside the Sub articles that are worth the 8.95 it costs per month alone.  If you don't like the info, just cancel.

It makes refrence to the positon change, who Sam got the info from (very credible) and another coach who may not be happy about something.

Only find it odd because I don't see any indication that he's ever played the position before. That's a lot of ground to make up to have any kind of impact this season, whereas he'd likely see the field earlier on the DL. It will be interesting to see where he lands. And hopefully, he's good with it.

FWIW, Hudson played a lot of OT in high school and when he first popped up on the radar he was looked as more of an OL prospect. People were still throwing in the possibility he'd be an OL when he committed. With his senior year blowup and Michigan's depth chart the chance that becomes relevant is remote.

from the beginning, they either feel REALLY good about some of the freshman DL, or the freshman tackles aren't playing very well right now. Seems to be an odd move to make after signing 4 guys to play tackle this class. Especially since there weren't any real rumblings about it until recently. I don't think it's the wrong move, but something had to have triggered this.

surprising that they would move a player who was getting pretty good reviews at DT to OT. I understand it's tough for freshmen to start, but I don't think this move is getting made for this year. It's getting made for the next 4, and I think that speaks volumes that one or possibly even two of the freshmen tackles we brought in isn't cutting it/is in the doghouse. Long story short, Michigan is making this move because they feel Hudson will be one of their 2 best tackles in 3/4 years. That's not a promising sign for a few of the guys they already brought in.

think. Shortsighted decisions like that are how you get Russell Bellomy against Nebraska, or a hole at RT currently. Hudson wont start against Florida. Hudson probably won't see meaningful minutes this year. But what this does do is address a potential need 3 years down without having to recruit freshmen/sophomores to step in right away. That's how we got here.

It could also mean the DL is ungodly deep, and they can afford to move Hudson. I'm not hitting the panic button by any means, but this move is for the future.

and I haven't seen Hudson's name mentioned once prior to the talk of this move.

I know Brian and Ace are extremely high on him as a DT based on his film but iirc several of the scouting reports said that he could be very good on offense as well.

This could also be similar to Big Mike O. repping on defense last year...kid is destined for a redshirt based on camp so let him spend a year playing the opposite side (or both sides) on the scout team and see where he fits best.

Don't see the need to jump to gloom and doom conclusions at this point.

Our new DL kids are very good and many may not get RS, so that they can be backups this season. Coaches probably feel that Hudson may perform better as an OT than DT. Or may be he is the replacement for Andrew Thomas who we lost to GA.

Interesting. I envisioned him along side Soloman in 2019. Gary WDE and Jeter SDE. Short yardage of coarse and Gary decides to come back for his 4th year. What? You guys didn't know?

Edit: Oh and if I had to guess it's because interior D-Line is stacked at the moment as well as the near to distant future. The staff feels this cat has potential and could help out in other ares as well and sooner. Or they just are playing ninja with him and kind of like similar trying the teaching of a quarterback to flop and play defensive back?

I agree, so hopefully his will not be the next name on the roster whose last name is of variable length depending on his in-game performance. I mean, after all, how many "o"'s could his last name realistically have before people would need to take a breath in the middle of shouting his name?

1. Put word out the Ol and the DB positions are unsettled. 2. Lull Florida into a false sense of security and optimism. 3 Unleash a bevy of 6 RBs, who each run for 100+ yds. 4. Blanket Fla receivers, resulting in 5 Picks and 7 sacks. 5. Destroy Fla. 42-3. 6. Profit.

I'm guessing Florida knows their only shot is to come out throwing but what they don't realize is that they are going to have a hell of a time. Last time I checked Michigan has two sophomores that are the best player in their region at that position of cornerback. Kinnel I think is a better safety than Hill and Thomas last year. That just leaves Mettelus. He'll be damn good too. Yeahhp... the Gators are fucked.

Just hope he has a open mind for it, and it don't end up like Kieth Washington. Not every player wants to change a position, let alone the other side of the ball. Also was that the reason for Washington's transfer? We wanted to move him from cb to saftey and it wasn't really working out for him?

Told a couple of us this weekend that Hudson is playing very well on the O-line and that he thinks he will stick there.  Also when asked if he could play this season Myers said, he's been running with the one's and two's all week and holding his own, so I do not see why not?!

For the record I feel the same way about this I do the onwenu move. We have multiple true freshman on the two deep of the interior d line and onwenu is playing guard despite the fact that he doesn't have the stamina to play a full game there because the oline wasn't playing well and they knew they needed him there. These moves are being driven by poor oline play and it's disappointing
