Indiana People vs. Ohio People

Submitted by Firstbase on

SIAP, but here's an eyebrow-raising excerpt from Bob Wojnowski of The Detroit News comparing Indiana people to those from Ohio.

"Wolverines-Boilermakers is merely the opener in a huge one-day clash between the neighboring states of Michigan and Indiana, a friendly, respectful border rivalry. It doesn’t quite garner the attention of the Michigan-Ohio spat, largely because Indiana people are proud, simple folk, while Ohio people are dolts with horrific behavioral issues."

Yet, my experience is that gas in Ohio is cheaper than in Michigan, or at least cheaper than Ann Arbor...even at Costco.

I lived in a small town in Ohio for a couple years of my life.  The people there weren't very different from those who I knew growing up in Michigan.  The biggest difference I remember is the entire area would always come together on Friday night for high school football.  That wasn't as big of a thing where I grew up.

Born and raised in Michigan, have lived in Indiana for the last 30yrs.

Yes this is a broad simplification of an entire state...but it isn't that far off the mark, even Wojo is trolling an entire state.

that have come from Ohio are Desmond Howard and Elvis Grbac. Oh, and the Pretenders first few albums were damn good too. And the one song made fun of Ohio. And that's it...

Janis Joplin would like a word with you sir.  I mean, if she were alive she'd probably want a word with you.  And Aretha Franklin (although she's not quite a "rock" vocalist most of the time).  And Tina Turner.  They're both alive, and would like a word with you.  And for my money (YMMV), PJ Harvey, St. Vincent (Annie Clark) and Fiona Apple >>Chrissie Hynde.

(And I love me some Chrissie Hynde.)

:-) Nothing like stirring the pot with a declarative like "best of all time."

This comes down to how we might categorize.  Had I said "greatest female vocalist" and left off the "rock" ... well, then we can have a pretty lively debate:  Etta James, Patsy Cline, etc.

I nod approvingly to Janis, Aretha, and Tina.  Love 'em all.

What I like about Chrissie Hynde is she's expressive without yelling or being too screechy. To my ear that created a certain constrained edginess I thought came across really well.

Indiana and Ohio are pretty much the same states. The people are as well.  I've lived in Ohio my entire life and went to my grandparents' lakehouse in Indiana all the time growing up. I've had my fair share of experiences in both states and can't tell the difference between the people.

Indiana is the armpit of the Midwest. Although the people are good people. The State itself is horrid. It brings nothing to the table. If the 50 states were a family, Indiana would be the never married fat 50 year old uncle who watches basketball the entire reunion. Ohio would be the bragadocious twice-divorced former jock beer-bellied uncle constantly grabbing the nephew and giving him noogies until the kid cries, then Uncle Ohio chastises the 6 year old for "being soft like his daddy"

As an Indiana resident, all I can say is that we don't all love basketball. Everybody assumes that since I live in indiana, I must be a huge basketball fan. And that I root for IU. Not a big basketball fan. And especially do not root for IU. I know it's not what the article is about, but had to get that off of my chest!

or does every Ohio person that drives in the left lane on the freeway go the speed limit or slower? That, and they never switch lanes to faster traffic.

Do these people have jobs??
