Gene Smith soliciting NIL donations from fans

What a wild world college football is. Living in Columbus, it’s funny to hear all the OSU fans complain about how they should win every game and how it’s been unacceptable they haven’t won a title since the first playoff.
Regarding money, I love Michigan football. “Sadly” so much of life revolves around it. I’m here 10x a day, read all the articles, know all the players, make it up to a few games a year with my dad, and all that stuff. Despite my love for this sport and team, I couldn’t imagine donating my hard earned money to an NIL pool for high school kids and college kids. It’s feels gross. If businesses want to do it in exchange for advertising and stuff, that’s awesome, but just giving away my money…to each their own I guess.

I respect but disagree with this take. Most of us spend money on silly shit every day- clothes for our pets; $12 Starbucks coffees; 10 different streaming channels etc etc. I don’t see spending $10-$20/month as a recurring NIL donation as any stranger than those things. Michigan sports is my biggest hobby. If it helps us stay competitive in this new landscape I’m fine with it. Imagine 50,000 fans contributing $10/month. That’s $6,000,000 per year simply from normal folks, not businesses or mega boosters. That can be big for a program. Cancel one of your eight streaming services or stop buying that weekly Starbucks and support your team instead, IMO.

Smith made a mistake in the first line of his begging, when he referred to "the Ohio State Buckeyes."
It doesn't seem a mistake because that's how anyone would normally say it: "the Ohio State Buckeyes."
BUT in their petty attempt to seem more important, they're insistent that "the" is part of their school's name, hence, "The Ohio State University" and "The Ohio State."
Soooooo, to be consistent, he should have written "the The Ohio State Buckeyes."

Not including "world famous" is the real problem.
December 8th, 2022 at 6:18 PM ^
We lose..send more money for wins.. the end.
December 8th, 2022 at 6:18 PM ^
A bit surprising considering what they have saved on gold pants the last two years.
December 8th, 2022 at 6:28 PM ^
But, don't they give out silver pants for second place?
December 8th, 2022 at 7:04 PM ^
Brown bed sheets.
December 8th, 2022 at 8:52 PM ^
They're not silver, but they ARE cooler-approved.

Crying towels?
December 8th, 2022 at 7:02 PM ^
3 years!
December 8th, 2022 at 7:06 PM ^
Zing!
December 9th, 2022 at 1:12 AM ^
This is comment of the season imo
December 9th, 2022 at 7:13 AM ^
three years, actually, although those nitwits probably count the covid cancellation as a win, too.
December 8th, 2022 at 6:19 PM ^
It's gross and feels a bit pathetic, but this is the world we live in now. I can't say it's stupid when Ohio is the 7th most populated state and loves OSU.
December 8th, 2022 at 6:43 PM ^
I'm just kinda stunned he's out there on Twitter with it and not doing it through like, a mailing list

I hate to be the contrarian but I wish Michigan's leadership were as actively involved as Smith in terms of raising NIL money. One way or another, players are going to go to schools that cross their palms with silver. Let's hope our new president can change what we believe the culture to be. That would make recruiting lots easier.

Someone help me here ... I thought the university could not be directly involved in NIL. The athletic director of a university soliciting funds for specific NIL campaigns seems like "direct" to me.
EDIT -- so I'm no lawyer, but this article from a law firm seems to describe things fairly well. Two points: (1) it's a shifting landscape; and (2) from my reading -- again, no lawyer -- the key is the university has to stay out of the contract between athlete and sponsor. But because of (1) and (2) there seems a fair bit of latitude for things like what Smith is doing here.
December 8th, 2022 at 6:25 PM ^
Me too. Maybe the argument is that "direct" means directly giving money to the athletes. Even if it's a stretch, NCAA may have too many battle scars to pick a fight, and OSU knows it.
December 8th, 2022 at 6:27 PM ^
I’m pretty sure the rule that kept university’s from being directly involved has been changed.
December 8th, 2022 at 7:36 PM ^
The links are pointing to the collectives not the University?? I think that makes this what it is.
December 8th, 2022 at 6:22 PM ^
This is so precious.
December 8th, 2022 at 6:28 PM ^
I have a couple coolers I picked up at yard sales that I can donate to the cause. Stay strong Gene!
December 8th, 2022 at 6:28 PM ^
Need to build that dome for fall games to keep those gentle boys from rain/snow/cold
December 8th, 2022 at 7:18 PM ^
And the sun. It was very sunny in Columbus that wonderful day, November 26, 2022.
December 8th, 2022 at 7:55 PM ^
GBGW, I heard it was too bright, and that the shadows created by the sunshine were both confusing and a bit spooky..
December 9th, 2022 at 8:03 AM ^
The sun was in stroud’s eyes.
December 9th, 2022 at 8:50 AM ^
That was Mazi.
December 8th, 2022 at 6:36 PM ^
Sorry, but in the current landscape, I see no problem with this and I hate OSU
December 8th, 2022 at 7:33 PM ^
It's an optics thing. Last game they got spanked by their biggest rival at home after a year of shit talk, now this? It's like when Michigan gave out free tickets with coke bottles under Brandon
December 8th, 2022 at 6:39 PM ^
This post makes me wanna donate to our NIL, anyone got one they recommend? That benefits players the most?
December 8th, 2022 at 7:07 PM ^
HEY!!! 2 links! NAILED IT! FIRST TRY!!!!
December 8th, 2022 at 7:45 PM ^
Wait, don't you need Warde to tweet you the links?
December 8th, 2022 at 8:20 PM ^
Should be stickied.
December 8th, 2022 at 6:41 PM ^
Well, it is the giving season. Wonder if he had someone ringing a bell in the background when he announced this?
December 8th, 2022 at 6:48 PM ^
1.) It is unbelievable that he needs to do a request of that nature. Do THEy not have big time donors? Do THE big time donors not believe in THE runner on third base?
2.) If he actually needs to do a request like that, does it imply that THEy are in financial distress?
Just asking.....
December 8th, 2022 at 6:53 PM ^
I don’t think the university can directly contribute to those, so I think they need donors to do so.
I am sure OSU has many wealthy alumni but getting 10,000 fans to put in $100 a piece is still $1 million
I wish UM would do the same, in all honesty.
December 8th, 2022 at 7:08 PM ^
I agree!
December 8th, 2022 at 7:13 PM ^
Basketball School
December 8th, 2022 at 9:43 PM ^
WBB school…..
December 8th, 2022 at 7:26 PM ^
They should just patrol the lot before games and fine people for pooping in coolers. NIL solved....and domes, domes for everyone.
December 8th, 2022 at 7:26 PM ^
It doesn't hurt to ask. This is the new world of college football
Gene Smith will be collecting Michigan 10cent cans and bottles.
December 8th, 2022 at 8:18 PM ^
Not even Kramer and Newman could make that work.
