Fuck OSU, PSU, and MSU and the molester-enablers at those schools.  Fuck them forever and always.

Taking the behavior of some Catholic dioceses and bishops and attributing it to all Catholics is the very definition of bigotry and prejudice.

Would you (or anyone else on the board) say that all Muslims should be suspected of terrorism because Islamic terrorists around the world kill innocent people? No, you wouldn’t. But you made the same sort of generalized and bigoted assumption in your prior statement. Pump the brakes and check yourself.

Well... I agree, but at the same time, the Catholic sex abuse scandal is shockingly and saddeningly pervasive, virtually across every diocese in the United States, and also in many places across the world.

The point is that the institution of the church, regardless of setting, facilitated, then minimized or even ignored the fact that religious workers (priests AND nuns and other church workers) were using their vocations to abuse children and the otherwise vulnerable. And that in many cases, this was a self-perpetuating cycle of abuse that began when they themselves were children in Catholic settings.

But does that mean it's a punchline on a sports message board? Absolutely not.

Bando, I agree that this scandal was shockingly and saddeningly pervasive and that it was terribly evil for the institution of the Catholic Church to be complicit in perpetuating, covering up, etc. I’m with you on what you said.

My issue was more that the comment was a) in bad taste and b) seemed to lump Catholics in general in with those the abusers and enablers and equate them.

I understand anger, outrage, etc being directed at the abusers and enablers. But I take issue when people begin saying things that can be interpreted as saying all Catholics or even all Catholic institutions covered up for child abusers.

Doesn’t that also mean then that we shouldn’t make gestures toward ALL Buckeyes and ALL Sparties? I think this post was obviously not meant to be taken seriously and the little elbow poke at ND and Catholics was all in jest, more so than condemning a portion of society that chooses to practice their faith by a specific manner. There’s some truth to the comment, as we have all witnessed, and also a heavy sense of what I perceive as an obvious joke. The reason concepts like religion and politics are banned in this community is because people react like this to a post that was in no way blatantly offensive, as you suggest. Perhaps you should be doing some brake pumping of your own.

If that's the case then we should stop using phrases like "fuck MSU," or "fuck OSU," because not everybody there is bad. But as soon as it hits something close to you it's "Woah woah woah don't paint all catholics with the same brush".

I was born catholic and have no problem with what he said. It's called don't enable your own and recognize when there's an issue.

Let’s not take a person’s sports fandom, compare it to religion and say they are basically equivalent.

It seems like you’re saying it’s ok to say “Fuck Catholics” because many people in this board say “Fuck OSU.”

Saying “Fuck (insert religion)” is nowhere near comparable to “Fuck (insert rival sports team)” Just because you grew up Catholic doesn’t make it ok. It’s still pretty offensive.

As a Catholic I try to separate the failings of the church as an organization from the faithful. People in pews weren’t responsible for these misdeeds. In fact the vast majority of the faithful, of all faiths, use their faith as a means of personal support and guidance through lifes most difficult times. They are not the ones who have helped cover up abuse and their expression of faith shouldn’t feel tarnished by real concerns about the organizations of faith that have committed crimes.

Yet Catholics continue to donate money to an institution that systemically covered up heinous crimes, and continues to protect the criminals. So spare me the victim act.

You are no better than the people who continued to support Paterno and Penn State in the aftermath of Sandusky.

Catholic atrocities are as old and wide spread as Catholicism itself.

Brian Kelly killed a 19 year old student assistant by making him go 40 feet in the air in a scissor lift with 50-60 mile per hour winds in order to film practice so they could try and beat Tulsa that week, and helped cover up Prince Shembo's rape of a St Mary's student and allowed his players to continue slandering her until she killed herself. Let's say it how it is, just so no one thinks you're joking about it.

I wish this sick shit would stop happening.  That was some deranged MF, more than 177 victims, obviously some or many people knew,. yet nobody tried to stop him.  Hope some of those involved get what they deserve.

it appears that then coach, later congressman jim jordan was a paid enabler of dick strauss

...as w/PSU, MSU and other institutions, it truly does 'take a village' to enable widespread abuse

Rivalries aside, I feel for the victims in this situation. Shouldn't happen ever to anyone. I hope the perpetrator is castrated or killed in prison.

I see that clown Jim Jordan is following the play book of saying because he wasn’t named conclusively in the report as having knowledge of the abuse that he is somehow exonerated. I guess this is a new low bar, celebrating not being outright named as knowing about the sexual assaults of multiple athletes under your care.

That stuff blows my mind.  How does this guy abuse football players & wrestlers without getting his ass kicked?  I just picture him grabbing Chris Spielman inappropriately and getting pile drived.

Power imbalances are a real thing. These are young men, alone, in a vulnerable position with someone who is respected as a caregiver. Wrap this up in a hyper masculine environment like sports where even talking about injuries or their effects is considered a weakness and you build a code of silence into the system without even realizing it.

The part about not saying anything makes sense.  But, I don't get the part about letting it happen in the moment.  I have a hard time seeing a football player whose been told he's the best at everything his whole life get touched inappropriately and not confronting the guy in the moment.  But, I've never been in that situation so I guess I have no idea.

I would assume this started as light boundary pushing at first. The situation of being stretched or massaged is fairly unique to most people so the whole experience is awkward to begin with. Then over time he went further and further. While it felt wrong to most players it was likely written off because the man is a doctor and we are all conditioned to trust them. I think it just falls in a perfect blindspot for most people. Also I don’t think men ever really consider the possibility of being sexually assaulted, it’s just not something that’s talked about.
