Does OSU deserve being in the CFB Playoffs?

Submitted by UM85 on November 27th, 2022 at 8:26 AM

B1G Commissioner Kevin Warren called for tOSU to be included in the playoffs.

"Clearly, Michigan and Ohio State are two of the best four teams in the country, and I think today proved it. Great football game. Epic football game. Without a doubt, I think they are clearly two of the best football teams in the country."

And:

"These are two powerhouse teams and clearly two of the top four teams in all of college football. You look at all the games you watch. Put even the rankings to the side. If you ask yourself, who are the teams that are better than these two football teams in the country? These are two of the four best teams in the country. By far."

Obviously, KW is just doing his job but he is only half right (the part about Michigan.)  After the spanking UM just put on ohio (hahahahahaha!!!) and the fact that ND lost to USC (hahahahahaha!!!) - which was one of ohio's marquee wins, tough to argue that the Big Ten East's runners-up deserve anything other than a trip to Disneyland to play the PAC12 runners-up.

Would you rather have ohio in or out?

They may end up being the one eyed man that is king in the land of the blind. Should USC lose they would be the only one loss team left it’s been that crazy of a season. I think USC handles its business and it’s going to be

Georgia

Michigan

TCU

USC

Out. They got hammered at home when they were almost double digit favorites. They are not a great team. USC played better against ND. They deserve to be in over them.

Georgia 1

Michigan 2

TCU 3

USC 4

They aren't getting in.  They will take Alabama before they take OSU.  I don't think you can lose by 20 plus points at home.  OSU is loaded with talent but they are out.

EDIT:  They will take Alabama if USC or TCU lose.  The top 4 are set if everyone wins their championship next weekend.

I hear what you're saying, but I don't think the Committee will take a 2-loss non-conference champion that hasn't been in the top 5 for half the year over a 1-loss non-conference champion that literally spent the entire season in the top 5 and only lost to another top 5 team.  Like last year, put the final score aside and we have to admit those games were closer than the score appears.  If either TCU or SC loses next week, the only other 1-loss team will be in.

That's my dollar.

Bama's losses were to a 3-loss team and a 2-loss team, with significant struggles against a 5 loss team and a not bowl eligible team.

I don’t know how good of a job the committee does but the reporters that cover the goings on in those meetings suggest the committee considers which teams are best first, not just their records. In their minds 11-1 is not necessarily better than 10-2.

Considering that I think this is how it plays out: Georgia is in. Win or lose. Michigan is in. Win or lose. I believe TCU is in. Win or lose. USC is in with a win. I can absolutely see Bama jumping OSU. Yes they have two losses (one in OT). But those losses are by a combined 4 points. Both on the road. Against top 10 teams (at the time). OSU lost by 3 touchdowns. At home. Against a team playing without its best player. If Booger MacFarland can astutely recognize how bad that makes OSU look I am confident the committee will as well.

Finally: the Big Ten has been bad, outside of 3 teams. Say what you want about the SEC bias etc but it is clearly a better league this year. That is going to matter at the end of the day (if USC loses).

I’m assuming Georgia, Mich and TCU are in no matter what. For the last spot they can’t credibly take Bama over 1-loss OSU or even two-loss USC.

Bama will have exactly one win vs a ranked opponent which isn’t even that good (4-loss Texas) and loss to the two best teams they played. OSU will have two ranked wins. ND win is roughly equivalent to the Texas win and then OSU also has a blow out of a top 10 team on the road.

USC if they lose in the champ game is a wild card. They’ll have two losses, just like Bama, both being to the same team that will be ranked in the top 10 but also will have one more win and three wins over ranked opponents.

SEC bias aside, I have no idea how anyone could put Bama above either team

Day has been running his mouth about how it wasn’t that bad of a beat down. Fuck him and fuck Warren. If the shoe was on the other foot, he would not be saying Michigan should be in. Send them to Pasadena and I hope Utah or whoever spanks them after Stroud sits out. Again, fuck Ohio State, fuck Ryan Day, fuck Kevin Warren, and fuck that whole goddamn shithole of a state. God that felt good.

20+ years of pent up frustration. Constantly losing to these fuckers. dreading this weekend for years. Took my son to his first game - App State. Oregon the following week. The Rich Rod and Hoke years. Wondering if Harbaugh can get us there and frustration with the timing. Feel like I’m going to explode with happiness today.

Also, I don’t know if Warren would be saying that. Gut feeling. I know it’s the company line and yea I know it brings more dollars. Somehow I think he’s find a way or reason not to.

Absolutely this.  I saw so many sports analysts say if Michigan loses, we are out and no shot at the playoffs.  But OSU is somehow the exception to the rule?  They should have a chance at redemption but we shouldn't? Our schedules were mostly similar outside of ND, which, turned out to be not THAT great of a feather in the cap when they lost to a middling Marshall and a cellar dwelling Stanford.

I wouldn't have minded OSU having a chance back in if the media didn't paint this whole narrative  so hypocritically that Michigan would deserve no shot and have no chance to make the playoffs if we lost.  But they wouldn't for us so they shouldn't for them.

They got 20+ hung on them.  Let them stew for another year.  It brings me untold joy.

Well done. I think OSU gets better treatment than UM and I've posted this before.

Time for a conspiracy theory: There are several ties between mainstream sports sites and ones that are specific to recruiting. If a stacked team like OSU plays poorly in big games their information (recruiting rankings) will lose some value. So, teams like Alabama, Georgia (not necessary this year, of course), Clemson, and OSU will get more favorable coverage than they deserve.

To put it another way, imagine if Maizen ran the CFP.

Only if we get to play them again in the playoffs and we will crush them again like we did yesterday. Think about it.  Losing to us twice in a season?  Soul crushing for them.

And I dare say...BPONE has packed his bags and he's deciding where to move to next.

Out, but LSU is now a 3 loss team which helped the Buckeyes. USC could lose in the Pac-12 Championship game. We have the three undefeateds with UGA, Michigan and TCU then there's the 1 loss teams and the Buckeyes could be on top of that list.

It would be better to hope USC wins that game which would keep the Buckeyes from sneaking in the backdoor.

2 loss USC would be more deserving than 1 loss OSU for a couple reasons.

They played a conference championship game.

They beat ND (after ND "sorted things out") more thoroughly.

That being said, I'm rooting for USC to win because the committee has their head so far up their ass they'll likely put in an undeserving OSU or an even more undeserving Bama.

For important clarification, USC lost AT Utah... by 1 point... on essentially the last play of the game...

OSU..... did not.  Ah hell....  OSU lost AT HOME by 22 freaking points.... to a team playing without their best player...  They were smoked, humiliated, stuffed in a bag and thrown to the curb.... (NOTE: I am well aware of the first half, football is a 60 minute game)

There is no comparison.  This was by far the best case scenario, beating those front runners soundly enough to further crumble their fragile foundation....

They spent the whole year flapping their traps about how tough they were, Day made a point to bring it up every time a microphone was shoved in his face.  Yet again, it became clear Saturday who the tougher team is....  Certainly not them.....

No.  OSU does not deserve to be in the playoff.  No way.  They were blown out at home.  No team that loses that way should be in the playoff.  A team with two close losses should be in over a team that got totally obliterated in their own stadium.

But...if either TCU or USC lose they have a chance to sneak in.   OSU does not deserve to get in, but they might.

Personally, I would prefer a strong presumption against any team that does not even win their division being selected.   But I doubt the committee shares this view.

Has he made any sort of statement on either situation? To their credit, OSU handled the hockey situation internally pretty swiftly and appropriately, I think. Still would be nice to see him acknowledge that these things happened. I get why he can’t comment in detail on the tunnel fight given the pending criminal process working its way through the system. But not even an acknowledgement?
