this is like the beef o'brady bowl of big ten games so i am in favor of this.
December 15th, 2020 at 12:54 PM ^
Exactly, please just cancel this ridiculously scheduled game already.
December 15th, 2020 at 3:11 PM ^
Are you saying it's a "lucky break" that so many of our football players are sick?
December 15th, 2020 at 12:47 PM ^
Good. Iowa would put a whipping on us.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:41 PM ^
That we are worried about playing Iowa, and their merry band of mostly 3* recruits, with classes ranked number 9,8,8,9,8 in the big ten from 2016 to 2020, says a lot about the state of our football team, and our football coach in particular.
Maybe we should have hired Ferentz instead of RR.
December 15th, 2020 at 12:47 PM ^
Can we take this season behind the woodshed and put it out of it's misery? Please?
December 15th, 2020 at 12:47 PM ^
Shut it down now and finalize things with Jim ASAP.
December 15th, 2020 at 12:59 PM ^
Finalize as in him going away to nfl. Sounds great to me.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:22 PM ^
Yep end the season effective immediately.
December 15th, 2020 at 12:47 PM ^
I don't see the point of playing any more games this year.
December 15th, 2020 at 12:51 PM ^
Good. It's pointless.
December 15th, 2020 at 12:52 PM ^
The virus is not under control. There has not been mass distribution of the vaccine for it. Why at this point risk more exposure?
The season is a total loss on so many levels. Just stick a fork in it. It's done.
December 15th, 2020 at 12:52 PM ^
Good. Do not want to play More Corn Wisconsin.
December 15th, 2020 at 12:53 PM ^
Just saw Balas' tweet. Of course, the Buckeye mouthbreathers are all over it, right on cue.
December 15th, 2020 at 12:54 PM ^
Football is all they have.
December 15th, 2020 at 12:57 PM ^
An an Ohio native (and a resident of Ohio for all but 8 years of my life), I can confirm.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:00 PM ^
Thanks and you know what? Good for them. There are a lot of self-destructive hobbies out there and cheering for a college football team isn't one of them.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:12 PM ^
though sometimes it feels like it...
December 15th, 2020 at 12:59 PM ^
Football is all they care about, even if shutting it down is the best option for the safety and health of both athletes and coaches. Buckeye fans are not bright individuals.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:20 PM ^
It's insane that we're still arguing about how seriously schools should take COVID-19, but the replies to that tweet show the debate is apparently still in full bloom.
December 15th, 2020 at 12:54 PM ^
Good.
December 15th, 2020 at 12:55 PM ^
I'd assume give the playing time to the kids available. Even if we have to play walkons an some positions those kids would love the opportunity. Nobody expects us to win anyway, give the kids a chance!
December 15th, 2020 at 12:58 PM ^
Nah. No football version of the Charge of the Light Brigade for me.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:07 PM ^
And who is our Lord Cardigan?
December 15th, 2020 at 1:12 PM ^
We already play walk-ons. As starters...
December 15th, 2020 at 1:00 PM ^
Wow, that would give Harbaugh and Manuel a couple days head start to begin talking about that extension they've had six years to consummate...#lucky
December 15th, 2020 at 1:07 PM ^
Commissioner Warren should have stayed with his decision from August 11th.
He'd be looking pretty slick right about now.
This entire charade has been about getting the Franklin County (OH) Community College football team into the CFP.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:31 PM ^
It was not his decision.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:13 PM ^
Yup, this won’t move up their timetable at all. In fact, let’s just meet after the first of the year. No need to work so close to the holidays.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:02 PM ^
Not sure if it's UM or Iowa with the issue. Very vague tweet. The B1G messed this season up before it started. All other conferences, although they've had cancelations, have played more games than they cancelled.
The B1G teams tried so hard to not have players exposed prior to the season, it is hurt the season. SEC and ACC were smart to expose players prior to the season, and it has worked out for the most part.
I know this is an unpopular opinion on this blog.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:05 PM ^
Iowa is one of only three teams, along with Penn State and Rutgers, to have played all 8 games as scheduled. Occam's razor would suggest that it's Michigan's problems that are causing the doubt, as they had a big enough outbreak to cancel their last two games.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:26 PM ^
I remain amazed that Rutgers was somehow able to pull off not getting COVID-19 during the season, though I guess they did have a pretty big outbreak before the season so perhaps they just had good timing.
Credit to these schools and their protocols, though I am always a bit suspect about positive test reporting and the like given what we've seen from other schools.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:09 PM ^
I'd say that this is clearly Michigan's issue, not Iowa's -- and I think that's an easy assumption based on two things:
1. Michigan has obviously have been dealing with a substantial COVID issue for quite some time now -- they haven't played since November 28. Iowa, on the other hand, has had zero COVID issues to date (at least zero that have been reported).
2. The photograph of Sunday's UM "practice" featured about 25 kids in it.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:17 PM ^
I don’t know that this has anything to do with it. The BIG screwed up by establishing protocol, following it, having it succeed, then cancelling the season. They decided not to play football when the prevalence of the virus was much lower and risk was less. Additionally, most BIG schools are located in cold climates. Guys are spending more time indoors, less time outside, and the seasonal variance of this virus is not in our favor in the Midwest with the cold temps. Schools in warmer climates have an advantage from this aspect as well. The BIG should have moved up the schedule, not pushed it back.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:21 PM ^
Remember when the early schedules were being discussed, and how it was apparently a "given" at one time that UM-OSU would take place EARLY in the season -- like, in October?
Yeah.
They should have stuck with that.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:25 PM ^
I’m glad they didn’t
December 15th, 2020 at 1:24 PM ^
Iowa's issues are not with COVID.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:03 PM ^
Almost the entire fanbase is hoping we don't play any more football, some of those people want Harbaugh back. Is there a better example of cognitive dissonance?
December 15th, 2020 at 1:09 PM ^
if the numbers are bad, cancel.
however, the general and severe malaise here about wanting our team to shut down, setting that apart from if covid is the reason this week, is out of control. the kids have literally directed the majority of their entire lives in one fashion or another towards the opportunity to play football in college, and some cases, in the pros. get off their backs about how you want them to shut down.
if covid protocols are met, let them play and leave the kids alone - keep your understandable BPONE to yourself.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:16 PM ^
Right? Most of the people expressing satisfaction to shut it down are the same people that will go all hissy fit if someone outside the fanbase suggests we shut it down intentionally... Whatever.
December 15th, 2020 at 2:11 PM ^
No one is blaming the players. It's a bad idea to play sports, travel across state lines, etc. during a pandemic. I applaud their dedication, their desire to compete, yada yada, but around 3,000 people are dying every day and the people responsible for such decisions (athletic directors, commissioners) should shut it down.
Even if none of the players have long term issues, the people the program travels with are not hermetically sealed off from the general population.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:12 PM ^
Begging for an outbreak of an airborne respiratory virus to save us, in year 6 of Jim Harbaugh, from a complete ass beating at the hands of Kirk Ferentz and his almighty "run-run-rollout pass to the TE" offense. This is where this program is at.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:27 PM ^
The logic here is a little bit circular. I'm not so sure we are in this same position absent the oddities of 2020. Not saying we wouldn't be, but McCaffery would still (likely) be on board along with several others, including Nico. Who knows how much, but we can't discount the role of 2020 in the team's and coaches' failures this year.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:14 PM ^
I certainly hope so.
Edit: the tweet is vague so maybe it is Iowa.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:18 PM ^
It's insane we're trying to schedule an utterly meaningless game between Iowa and Michigan when we're averaging close to 3k dead per day from a highly-contagious disease that has been spreading for weeks. Honestly, I'd be fine if Michigan forfeited and said the damn score was 100-0 Iowa just to save the exposures for everyone involved.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:19 PM ^
Harbaugh unwilling to tell the press how many of his players and staff has tested positive for COVID. We don't need to know the names, just the raw number.
So, how many? Is it 20, 30, 40, more? This is what is so frustrating.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:23 PM ^
"Harbaugh unwilling to tell the press how many of his players and staff has tested positive for COVID."
LOL. Harbaugh doesn't determine university policy. If his bosses tell him not to share numbers for the program, then he's not going to. It's likely not his decision.
Direct your concerns to Manuel or Schlissel.
December 15th, 2020 at 1:50 PM ^
I don't know why anyone really needs to know or cares about the number. Beyond the fact it's undoubtedly university policy not to comment on this stuff, unless you believe it poses some risk to public health being able to say that X number of players and coaches are out due to COVID-19/contact tracing doesn't feel like something the public really needs to know.
