ADC: Bates intends to stay at BC "for a long time"

Submitted by michgoblue on
Apparently, Bates was asked some questions regarding the Michigan speculation. While he said the obvious nice things about his current job, including saying that he hopes to be there for a long time, he certainly didn't take the opportunity to deny having heard from Michigan. Rather, he gave a polite no comment by saying that he didn't want to comment on other institutions.

Seems like a pretty weak denial.

Bates would be a great get for us, especially since he is close with a certain former Michigan qb.

"There is no value of me commenting on other institutions and their processes" = "Michigan has contacted me about their AD opening, but we haven't agreed to anything."

"I love it here at Boston College, my values align with the institutional mission," = "President Schlissel, I align myself faithfully to institutional missions--like academic balance."

In summary, Bates has been contacted by Michigan.

And he's at least mildly interested.

Brandon failed because he actively made the job difficult. It was his motto for fuck's sake, "If it ain't broke, break it."

Michigan athletics sells itself like possibly no other school in the country. It is certainly amongst a very unique, small set of schools in terms of inherent advantages. Jesus, Bill Martin did some pretty good things and he was on a boat in the South Pacific half of the time. Obviously it wasn't a good place to be during a coaching search, but he hired Beilein and finalized millions in renovations.

My point is, whoever gets the job needs experience but one trait they also need to have is the ability to let talented people do their jobs instead of micromanage the way Brandon did. A good AD at a school as strong as M is like a good referee. Shouldn't even notice him/her.

DB lost sight of all of the inherent advantages within the athletic department in search of a few additional marginal dollars. He assumed that the base of season ticket sales would always be there regardless of how he treated the most loyal customers. He was so very wrong.

The AD job isn't the easiest job, but at a school like Michigan, keeping the core of season ticket holders happy has never been terribly difficult.  DB went way out of his way to push the bounds of what could be extracted from the fans and ended up losing a lot of them.  Hopefully the capital plans that have been put in place won't limit the pricing flexibility of the department when it comes to ticket prices as the next AD will need to rebuild the season ticket wait list.  As well as the budget for hiring the next football coach.

I think it's a much harder job than a lot of people are saying.  There's seems to be a notion that we can just hire anyone with a pulse and as long as he can bring us a good football coach for the 2015 season, nothing else matters.

But that's just not true.  Our next AD will likely have to navigate Schlissel's "balance" demands and fans' impatience for wins, figure out which traditions to preserve/bring back and where to allow modernization, hire at least one football and basketball coach, keep the department in strong financial health despite waning football ticket demand, keep U-M clean at a time when even schools like UNC and ND are dealing with academic scandals, competently manage any crises that do arise (with increased scrutiny on issues like player safety and campus sexual assault), handle a new apparel contract (right?), appease / put up with the many groups at U-M that will weigh in on this coaching search, especially if we don't get Harbaugh ... and many more issues.

This isn't as simple as hiring the guy who gives us a slightly better chance of getting Harbaugh than the other guys.  It's an important job and I think Schlissel is right to spend some time figuring this out.

he also hired a football coach that has won and won big at every place he has ever coached but 1. A coach that is currently winning big at a place that hasn't been good since the desert swarm D's of the late 80's early 90's.  Martin seems to have been the only intelligent Alum around Michigan during his tenure.

This takes me back to my 19 year old self, that kid who just KNEW he wanted to be a journalist. He realized early on that much of his career would be spent asking dumb questions to which he would already know the (non) answer he's going to get before he even asks them. That kid is very fortunate he decided to pursue a different career.

I have high hopes that Bates comes home.  His mom was my fourth grade teacher, his dad my high school PE teacher and defensive coordinator.  Coach Bates had has/had a brilliant football mind. Brad Bates subbed in the building and was at some of our practices.  Great guy.

OP- I take it you mean Bates is close with Jim Harbaugh? I hadn't heard that before and it's not mentioned in the article. Not to be a wiener, but you might as well just say what you're trying to be sly about.

...really nothing to see here. It's actually a perfectly crafted response. It gives you backing for everyone who comes at you in the meantime, and gives you backing should you leave.

People should take notes.

But this is why I've been saying the coaching search needs to SLOW DOWN. Do not fire Hoke immediately after the OSU game.

AD's can make statements through the paper. Head coaches are public figures that have press conferences and ESPN and way more attention. They also may not be as polished. You do NOT want to lose your "guy" because he was backed into a corner simply because he wasn't ready to make the decision or he wanted to finish his current season with his football team. Shorten that window.

Fire Hoke after the OSU game and you'll have every CC mentioned making a press conference saying he's not interested and you're going to lose some even if they are because they owe it to their team to finish the year and focus day in and day out on the job at hand. Dan Mullen would be a prime example.

I don't think he's coming anyway...but he's definitely not coming before the end of their season, especially if they're in the playoff.

We're not good enough to lose canidadates to media speculation and pressure. We need our best shot, best pitch, best chance at EVERYONE. We need the best coach for Michigan and someone at the top of the list. Don't do anything to hurt that. Even if it hurts it just about 1%. There is nothing wrong in firing Hoke mid or even late December vs. late November.

No candidate is talking, frankly, none could unless they are currently unemployed.  If you have an AD or coaching job now, even admitting you would consider offers has serious negative consequences:  just ask the BC FB coach who did so and was fired immediately without having a new job to go to.  And the NFL is worse.  Tampering  in the NFL, by contract has very serious monetary consequences, so no NFL guy would ever say he was looking at other jobs.

All contact for either UM position is likely being handled by Hackett, Schlissel and UM legal staff, or better yet, corporate counsel.  The contact is not likely direct, but through agents or other intermediaries.  Since no big committees exist that are guiding/informing the searches, only two guys on the UM side know anything.  So reports anywhere of who is being considered or what that status might be, unless they cite Hackett or Schlissel or an agent or itermidiary for the candidate, they are just guesses, wild speculation.  The candidates themselves can say nothing, reveal nothing for the present.

What evidence do you have of that?

Bates was never a teammate of Harbaugh, and finished his masters before Harbaugh got here as a freshman. They've never been at the same institution at the same time subsequent to their Michigan days, either.

If I recall correctly, Brandon had a connection with the Harbaughs as well, but that didn't prevent Jim Harbaugh from taking the 49ers job when it came open.  So while I agree that personal connections help, they might not be the deciding factor for where JH would go if he leaves San Francisco.

That's not to say I wouldn't like to see it happen, but there's not much precedence available for a highly successful NFL coach going back to college.  Bill Walsh did it by being Stanford's coach for three seasons after being out of the pros for a handful of years.  Other than that, I can think of a similar example.

That said, it would be logical for Michigan to have its AD in place before the football coaching hire is finallized.  Any new head football coach coming to Ann Arbor would want to know who the Athletic Director will be because that's his immediate supervisor.

If anything, that makes President Schlissel's comments on Monday all the more surprising.  He says that he's made no contact with any AD candidates and indicates that he wants to take a deliberative approach prior to making a decision.  But anyone aware of how college football works knows the timline on when a head coach hire should take place, and if having an AD named is a prerequisite, then he and interim AD Jim Hackett don't have a whole lot of time.

We'll know how things are transipiring by the end of the month.  If Hoke is fired shortly after the Ohio State game and an interim named to replace him (hopefully coaching the team to a bowl, even a minor one, just for the extra practices), than Michigan had better have an AD in place NLT four or five weeks from now.

Brandon is a narcissist who would never tolerate a guy like Harbaugh getting all the credit for turning things around. Harbaugh would dump Brandon in a trash can if he presumed to watch film with the staff. Brandon needs a mediocrity like Hoke to push around. Bates is comfortable in the background, like Canham, and he would gladly leave all the oxygen in the room for Harbaugh. The personalities of the ADs are very important. The great head coaches are egomaniacs who will not abide meddlers like Brandon.
