ADC: Bates intends to stay at BC "for a long time"

Submitted by michgoblue on
Apparently, Bates was asked some questions regarding the Michigan speculation. While he said the obvious nice things about his current job, including saying that he hopes to be there for a long time, he certainly didn't take the opportunity to deny having heard from Michigan. Rather, he gave a polite no comment by saying that he didn't want to comment on other institutions.

Seems like a pretty weak denial.

Bates would be a great get for us, especially since he is close with a certain former Michigan qb.

The guy says he isn't going anywhere and somehow it equates to the fact that he IS coming, he just doesn't realize it yet. Same with Harbaugh. Yes, your guess is as good as mine as to where he'll end up after San Fan but it seems like some here have put all of their hope on him being the next head coach at Michigan. I just feel like majority of this board is setting themselves up for disappointment.

In my uninformed opinion, Harbaugh isn't coming. The next head coach will be an upgrade over hoke. Initially however, people's judgment will be deluded due to the fact that they put all of their attention on one guy. This board will go in full meltdown mode.

Obviously this is just my uninformed opinion, but I think I'm right on this one.

Words famously used by John Wooden to describe the tempo he expected them to establish.  There is pressure here, not immediately obvious from the way Schlissel and Hackett are viewed as handling things, but there is a deadline.

FB season ticket renewals are not far off.  Current holders will be asked in JAN to renew their right to purchase tickets by sending a check for the "seat license" portion in JAN.  What happens if no AD and no coach by then?  What happens if the choice is not made, or even worse, is not the homerun anticipated.  How many non-renewals (or simply delays) do you think it will take to force someone's hand?  2K, 4K, 5K, 10K.  It is not farfetched that with no waiting list there is much less risk to any season ticketholder in simply not paying/responding as a way to make a point about how important this overhaul is to not just 2015 but the total future of the AD.  Quite a few folks could simple "delay" and what could UM do to them.  Wtih no waiting list pulling their tickets would simply pour gas on the already smoldering "attendance fire."

Several articles have said that in the donors meeting Schlissel was told no more $$'s until this is fixed, and other accounts add that they made it clear to the Prez:  "fix this now".  Maybe the DB firing "fixed it for now" but I for one think that bubblegum on the dyke will quickly fade as a bandaide on emotions.  Firing DB was necessary, but it is not the salve that will heal the wound.  ONLY one hire, the new FB coach will do that.  That is the pressure Hackett and Schlissel face.  The day where real folks get to weigh-in with their pocketbooks is fast approaching, just over two months away, so they don't have to "hurry" but they do need to be "quick".

Translating what Bates said:

"I'm here right now and really like it, and as things are right now, I hope I can be here a long time.  But I won't deny that I've been contacted about UM directly or indirectly.  I'm not going to speculate on what UM is doing nor speculate on myself at UM because they haven't formally offered me the position.  Of course I am close to UM.  If they offer me the position... all bets are off."

That's how I read it.

Yeah, that job I haven't been offered?   Yeah, I really want that job.  The job I currently have?  It's ok but I really want that other job way more.  So much so that I'd like to burn all my bridges at my current job just to express interest in a different job that hasn't yet been offered to me.

Public figures can't say crap like that, at least not publically.  Well, unless they are Dave Brandon.
