2018 Starting QB, who you got?

Curious what the board thinks.

Who's taking the first snap at Notre Dame next September 2018?

Why would Patterson give up a sure-thing starting role in the SEC in order to transfer to a school where he is not guaranteed to start and must face serious competition just to see the field? I understand that Ole Miss can't go to a bowl game, but so what? Many people don't play in bowl games (Hurst may not, for example). And it's not like Ole Miss' scholarship reductions are going to immediately damage to the team, at least sufficient to warrant a transfer. It's entirely possible that he rides the bench and can't get to the NFL because he loses out to one of the many great UM QBs here already. Does anyone have a good answer as to why he would give up his starting role?

Ole Miss has 12 commitments for 2018 and a total of 36 stars, with all players having an equal amount. It's not going to get any better. In fact, the transfers tell you it is going to get worse. You state he's leaving a starting position without a guarantee of having the same status once he arrives in AA, so why is he doing so? Further you state reductions won't immediately harm the team but look at above incoming class, look at players that were in AA this weekend. Who knows where other players were so, in essence, you have a bunch of questions that cannot be answered by the Ole Miss program.  Harbaugh, in the meantime, can offer an equal chance to start, to be coaced by one of the recognized best teachers of the position and w/o a doubt an equal or greater chance to make it to the NFL.  It seems you're basing all your concerns(if you were him) on the possibility of not starting. I don't think it has ever entered his mind. That happens a lot among competitors and believe me, as a starter or non-starter, if he's good enough to play in the league, he'll see enough time in the maize and blue so NFL draft personnel will recognize that as well. And merely starting anywhere does not guarantee an invitation to the NFL. If, however, as you say, you are able to start with this level of competition, then there you go.

Peters...for a Fr, he seemed adept at progressing through his reads despite pressure caused by our crap OL. From the scouting reports, sounds like Shea has a lot of the same issues O'Korn had with happy feet and locking on to his 1st read.

Just because they are both transfers doesn't mean they are similar...

Shea was very successful in the SEC as a true freshman and is transferring because of sanctions.

O'korn was okay as a true freshman in the AAC and transferred because he was passed on the depth chart.

There is a large talent gap between them.

In three games, and one of those was a lousy game against Vanderbilt. Good golly Miss Molly, the hype has gotten out of control. Or is the board engaging in a collective Fred Jackson joke that has gone completely over my head?
If I didn't know better, I'd think the second coming of Bill Brasky announced he was transferring in.

I didn't say he was going to come in, win the Heisman and lead us to a National Championship.  I just stated that his talent and O'korn's talent aren't close and they shouldn't be mixed into the same group just because they both transfered in.  They have very different path's here.

Yes, there is a lot of hype because Patterson has a lot of tools as a QB and more in game experience than any other QB on the roster.

You said he had a "very successful" true freshman season. I pointed out he started 3 games that season. Why are our standards for other teams' players less than our standards for our players? Tarik played about 3 games. Was that "very successful?" Shea was 20 for 42 passing against Vandy. I am not trying to rain on anyone's parade, I just want to deal in facts. 3 starts with a middling QB rating (and 2 losses) is not "very successful."

If you want to talk stats then look a little further into it.  If you look at the stats you will see that Vandy had a top 30 defense last year.  That is better than a lot of SEC and B1G teams.

The other 2 games were @ Texas A&M which is a tough place to play and Miss State who was 8-4 and a big rival.

He was thrown into the fire as a true freshman and put up stats better than any Michigan QB this year.

Don't compare him to O'Korn.. It really isn't even close.

any comparisons to JOK, are just so far off base it's incredible. JOK started 5 games and threw 2 TDs and 6 ints for an average of 177 YPG and a average QB rating of 85.

In the 7 games Shea started which included starts against bama, auburn (in which he threw for over 400 yards) and LSU, he threw for 17 TDs and 9 ints for an average of 322 YPG and a average QB rating of 144.

But yeah they are the same.

and I can't wait to hear the argument of "well shea put up numbers against inferior talent."

you know who didn't do that??? JOHN O'MF-KORN. he fumbled twice and threw a pick against RUTGERS.... RUTGERS...

so please stop with the comparisons between these two, you're embarressing yourself.

show me where I compared him to John O'Korn. That was another guy saying Patterson had a "very successful" true freshman season. Let's compare only "true freshman" seasons:

QB A: 13 games, 3117 yards, 7 YPA, 28 TD, 133 rating

QB B: 3 games, 880 yards, 6.7 YPA, 6 TD, 121 rating

I'd take QB A. Oh, but wait, I forgot QB B played in the vaunted SEC and played those three games against Texas A&M (4th in the west that season, gave up 54 points to LSU) Vanderbilt (Ole Miss lost 38-17,) and Mississippi State (gave up 413 points that season, 93rd out of 128 teams.) Oh, the horror. What a murderers row of defensive talent. He even won one of those games by a point. Gimme a break.

you would take a 3-star, #32 ranked QB freshman at houston who torched nobodies over the consensus #1 QB. gotcha.

take a breath. Let's do this year shall we.

QB A: 5 games started, 887 yards (177 YPG), 2 TDs, 6 Ints, 85 rating.

QB B: 7 games started, 2259 yards (322 YPG), 17 TDs, 9 ints, rating 144.

I'm taking QB B.

and you really want to go there with who he played in those 3 games as a frosh??? JOK's frosh schedule was against Southern (whoever that is), Temple, Rice, Texas-San Antonio, Memphis, BYU, Rutgers, South Florida, Central Florida, Louisville, Cincinnati, SMU, and Vandy.

We aren't on here saying he's freaking Tim Tebow and going to win the Heisman. What we are arguing is the comparison to JOK, in which you made a pompus comment on a direct argument for the comparison.

what is funny is you literally just said you would take JOK over Shea, which is the most comical thing I've read on this blog. he was on pace for 30 tds at ole miss this season and probably would have thrown for more considering the back end of their schedule was far easier.

No. That wasn't part of my comparison. You added the context. Context matters.

QB A: 5 games started, 887 yards (177 YPG), 2 TDs, 6 Ints, 85 rating.

QB B: 7 games started, 2259 yards (322 YPG), 17 TDs, 9 ints, rating 144.

So am I. I wasn't arguing about this year. Geez, I hope no one in their right mind takes 5th year senior O'Korn over Patterson. I know players can keep improving, but some stop. What happened to O'Korn between his freshman year and his sophomore year is curious to me, but then again, I didn't follow him closely (at all) while he was at Houston.

and you really want to go there with who he played in those 3 games as a frosh??? JOK's frosh schedule was against Southern (whoever that is), Temple, Rice, Texas-San Antonio, Memphis, BYU, Rutgers, South Florida, Central Florida, Louisville, Cincinnati, SMU, and Vandy.

Southern is one of those schools the SEC schedules in November before their big rivalry games. Boy, that sure is a lot of teams JOK played as a true freshman. I'd say it's a lot more than THREE! And hey, he even played VANDY.

We aren't on here saying he's freaking Tim Tebow and going to win the Heisman. What we are arguing is the comparison to JOK, in which you made a pompus comment on a direct argument for the comparison.

I never said you said he's Tebow or Heismanesque. Someone said he had a "very successful" true freshman season. I'm arguing that he didn't have a "very successful" true freshman season.

what is funny is you literally just said you would take JOK over Shea, which is the most comical thing I've read on this blog. he was on pace for 30 tds at ole miss this season and probably would have thrown for more considering the back end of their schedule was far easier.

I said if given a choice between the results of those two true freshman seasons, I would choose the guy who played in more games, had more YPC, and a better rating. Obviously, O'Korn regressed and Patterson improved. Misconstrue my words and laugh all you want. It's a free country.

Shea Patterson is going to start. Honestly, I doubt it'll be McCaffery just because I don't see him being better than two guys with a lot more experience. I also think Patterson is better than Peters.

Shea Patterson. I can't see why they would bring him in / he would come if he wasn't going to start. Wouldn't be surprised tho if they do both play until one gets the reins. That's hard to do with Notre Dame start....
