Nice to have you back X. You too, shooting like Livers. [Marc-Gregor Campredon]

Big Ten road wins are rare this year. Triumphs over a truly solid Rutgers squad built by Steve Pikiell have been rarer still. Walking out of the biggest arena in the game with the Victors…well I call that mighty nice.

Fortunately Michigan managed to survive selling a home game to a Madison Square Garden filled with Scarlet Knight partisans, and playing it without Isaiah Livers, not to mention some of the other surprising departures since this game was scheduled.

It helped that the Wolverines got their best effort yet from the guy replacing their star winger. Brandon Johns canned a trio of threes out of the first TV timeout to erase an early Rutgers lead and reach 12 points inside the first 11 minutes. His arc established, Johns began driving, racking up fouls and dishing out assists. He ended the half by tipping in a free throw miss by Austin Davis, and turned up the defensive heat in the second. Johns would finish with 20 points, 4/9 from three, 7 boards, and two assists to one turnover.

The surge from the four spot was responsible for some of the space this team hasn't seen since December. But most of Michigan's constant good looks were generated by their star point guard, whom Rutgers chose to double with high hedges all game. Xavier Simpson, back after a one-game suspension, could only get one of his nine shots from the floor to fall, and coughed up an uncharacteristic six turnovers. But the national assists leader was consistently able to break the doubles and dish to open friends. Simpson also sealed a win that was starting to get dodgy by shooting an uncharacteristic 7-9 on free throws down the stretch. X also channeled the demands of thousand of Twitter coaches when a teammate starting playing out of sorts.

Both coaches had to work around foul trouble in the paint. Teske drew a foul on Rutgers center Myles Johnson on Michigan's first possession, and Johnson picked up his second trying to defend Johns again after Teske rescued a wild inbound Charles Woodson-style midway through the first half. That led to a short stint of Jon Teske abuse, the highlight of which was a one-handed posterization of Caleb McConnell. However Teske picked up two quick whistles, one a cheap offensive foul and the second on the floor while battling for position to send him too to the bench. Michigan used another stretch without Johnson to push the lead out as far as 14. They also got 12 good minutes from Austin Davis, who tied a career-high of 8 points, only some of that on dunks set up by Simpson.

That was about the extent of Michigan's bench usage other than an ineffectual six minutes from David DeJulius, including a short stretch where Juwan Howard went with a lineup of Simpson, DDJ, Nunez, Wagner, and Davis. Geo Baker's gumby arms wrecked this and it was quickly jettisoned.

There were many arms. [Campredon]

The Wolverines also used tight interior defense to force Rutgers into bad shots, many of them near the end of their clock. At first it felt like the Curse of the Trident would continue as Pikiell's squad of not-great shooters started 5/8 on threes (and 3/20 on twos at that point). Players on both sides were jacking triples from the NBA line, but while Michigan's were all uncontested, they were able to force their opponents into taking increasingly bad ideas: Rutgers would finish 6/24 from behind the arc, Michigan 9/19.

The Knights battled back by dominating on the offensive glass. Johnson had seven, and the box score credits the team with 26, a third of which can be chalked up to bad outside chucks that clanged back out of the paint to the waiting forest of Rutgers's characteristic length. Franz Wagner, who had an up-and-down game, in particular was not up to bodying out the various large persons caroming into him off Rutgers misses. This was never more evident than on one possession where Rutgers got six opportunities at a putback (making none).

So things got hairy at the end. The nine-ish point lead Michigan held all game was chipped to five in the last minute when Simpson missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 40 seconds left. On Rutgers's ensuing possession Caleb McConnell's pull-up three went wide and Myles Johnson appeared to knock it out of bounds over Johns, but the side judge gave the ball to the "away" team. A short review incontrovertibly showed the ball went of off Johnson, but the call was upheld, and Jacob Young—a menace all game for his high-effort play—canned a pull-up. Simpson made his next two free throws but Michigan's lead was shaved to two when one of Geo Baker's long contested threes finally going down. Wagner canned the next two free throws, Simpson stole a cross-court pass from Myles Johnson, and drilled the last two. Fittingly the last long bounce-out came back to Michigan's #3.

The Wolverines have some punchy passing to clean up, but this was a much-needed team victory over a quality opponent, no matter how differently we thought all this would go down when Beilein, Warde Manuel, and the Big Ten agreed to it. They get a real home game on Tuesday versus a no-longer-quite-so-scuffling Ohio State, before the big basketball rival comes to town a week from now.

An exciting game! Exciting to be in that hostile atmosphere — so loud that I couldn't hear any of the announcements — and exciting to win.

There were so few Michigan fans that the mobile camera guys, trying to show fans in the seats from both sides, kept returning to the same Michigan fans. And the t-shirt toss tossers had to keep tossing to the same few sections.

I'd imagine we can chalk some of X's errant passes up to weariness. We saw good things from almost everyone today, but Simpson was the difference. Hoping we get Livers back for OSU?

Brandon is really stepping up his game; if/when we get Isaiah back, we are going to have a target on our back pronto. Another guy that has elevated his game is Austin; sure, he's not making any plans for the NBA, but he's gotten better. He looks like he knows what he's doing and isn't the liability he used to be. If we can get Eli and Franz to take 'the next step', we're going to be dangerous come March.

If I’m reading the box score correctly, Rutgers took 83 shots from the field to our 47. And we won the game.
They're a team full of chuckers.

Well, some chucking, and some really ineffectual backboard volleyball.  (See: the 0-for-6 that Seth mentioned).

I suspect Michigan will have to play much better in the "return trip" to keep up their unblemished record against the Scarlet Knights.

And if the Big Ten absolutely has to have this "marquee neutral court" nonsense, they need to add a 21st game and give a neutral court game to everybody.  Since Michigan won, it's less of an issue, but to start the season with one fewer home game than anybody else is asinine.  At least in football, everybody in the division has the same number of home games, even if it does alternate between 4 and 5.

Michigan'a own AD gave this home game away.  That's what people are annoyed with.  This game was a must win -impossible to know going into the season, for sure- but to have given it away to a travel to NYC is ridiculous.  We prevailed though and garnered a very good neutral court W.  If a loss, many what-ifs would've come about.

What other school would give up a home game?!  It was silly, even if Rutgers was their normal dumpster fire.

I mean, I doubt Warde Manuel called the Big Ten office and asked if they could play the game in MSG.  But I suspect the approved it, which is pretty much just as bad.

If Michigan wanted to play in New York so badly, they could have scheduled a non-conference game at St. John's.  If Rutgers wanted to play there so badly, they could have moved their own home game there.  Instead, Michigan gets the worst of both worlds.

It's the 5th straight year of this Super Saturday event at MSG. Michigan and Rutgers also had a wrestling meet before the game.

Penn State gave up a home game to play Michigan there in the first year. Rutgers is giving up one next year for a rematch. Maryland gave up a home game vs Illinois for it last year.

How many of those teams had two Final Four appearances in the previous decade?

PSU basketball hadn't been good in ages.  Maryland has a good basketball fan base and deserved better, but their athletic department has been a shambles for years.

There are times Michigan needs to put their foot down and say 'no.'  They've avoided the ridiculous Friday night football games so far.  They should have avoided this also.  There are times when it's appropriate to flex your muscles a bit.  This was one of those times.

I think it's a silly argument because Michigan is also taking advantage of missing two road games by playing there. It's been a favorable venue for Michigan where their fan support has traditionally been the best in the Big Ten. We're not getting the short end of the stick by participating.

Did you hear the crowd yesterday?  That was a neutral site in name only.

Just because some other team wants to give up a home game to host Michigan at MSG doesn't mean Michigan has to return the favor.  Big Ten home games are too valuable to give up.

Nice win by the Wolverines. Great to see Johns break out and for the team to start making some outside shots and 3s. They need to score more than in previous years because the defense isn't the same lockdown it was.

I will say I don't agree that 1/3rd of the Rutgers offensive rebounds should be attributed to bad 3s that produce long rebounds. Good rebounding teams block out well which reduces those possibilities but in many cases I see Michigan's players just turn and look at the basket. That means if you're not the tallest or jump the highest you are unlikely to get anything not directly to you.

It's a bit of hyperbole, and I agree that Rutgers is just a solid offensive rebounding club, but at some point Rutgers had a series of just awful outside shots that clanged off random parts of the backboard and rim right into guys' hands that were not in particularly good position.  Like, I wouldn't have been surprised if Rutgers picked up 10-14 offensive rebounds, but 26 isn't a number you get just because you box out well.

As far as the rebounding goes we were doing well for the first half and then it all went to hell in the second half.

Had we not given the ball away so much for turnovers for touchdowns this would have been a laugher.

Good win but the poor defensive rebounding and missed throws are really upsetting. Teske and Wagner just stand around and watch the opposition grab rebounds. Either that or they fall to the floor for some reason grasping at I don't know what. This team would have several more wins if they cleaned up these 2 fundamental issues that have nothing to do with talent.

Well, if you're criticizing the players' work ethic, you're also criticizing the head coach who puts them out on the floor and doesn't do anything to correct their deficiencies.  Surely, if we hired these message board posters who can see all of these obvious flaws in the players' game that Juwan doesn't seem to notice, the team would be unstoppable!

Michigan made FTs when it mattered most. Franz stepped to the line for a 1-and-1, up only two, and canned both, more or less sealing the game. I'm sure I wasn't alone in being nervous as hell that he was going to miss the front end and Geo Baker would come down and hit a stepback 30-footer for the win.

I like the Simpson that doesn’t shoot much. Also liked him not being so ball dominant, until nearing end of game when the offense got stagnant because he took the air out.

He was a great facilitator for the first 35 minutes.

Was at this game 8 rows from the action.  If the officials called Rutgers for every clear mugging on their offensive glass, the entire starting 5 would have fouled out.  It was ugly. These Rutger dudes are getting away with murder in the paint.

The Rutgers crowd booed every time the big screen over half court showed anyone in Michigan gear. They booed little kids in maize or blue. They even booed a BABY!

I sense a Philadelphia fan influence in the New Jersey crowd. And I say that as a Philly fan, and someone who sold beer at Phillies' games.

Today's winning formula was simple - made some threes and clutch FT's down the stretch.

Most of the games we've lost we simply could not buy a three - today Johns and co took advantage of some open looks and made some damn shots!

Regarding the rebounds: Franz just isn't very strong. He gets pushed out of position, can't block out and loses 50/50 balls (hand injury may have something to do with that). He'll get stronger.

IMO Teske was great on the boards in the first half; his footwork and fight seemed to flag in the second.

Both Johns and Wagner need to improve their fundamentals down low - hopefully that'll come.

Lastly, Rutgers' guards had a huge height/length advantage, and their whole team attacks the offensive glass like a classic Big East team.

I get Franz is a scrawny frosh but he had rebounding position every time and was hammered over the back.  Rutgers is just a shit hack job.  We were good because we hit 47% from the arc to overcome shit calls in the paint.  Story of the season.

A great victory, and good to see them moving the ball around more.  It really helps the outside shooters as the ball screen game has not been as effective as in the past, although I think it might have caused a few more turnovers than usual.  Rutger's rebounding was an outlier, but Michigan is also not a great rebounding team so far this year.
