Exit JaRaymond Hall, For Real Comment Count

Freshman OL JaRaymond Hall was just officially announced as a CMU Chippewa:

Ja’Raymond Hall, a 6-foot-5, 282-pound freshman offensive tackle, has transferred to Central Michigan from Michigan.

I guess bowl practices didn't improve Hall's opinion of his future at Michigan; FWIW, I'd heard from a good source that once he started on Michigan's S&C program he dropped a lot of weight and wondered if he'd ever get up to a sufficient level to challenge guys like Onwenu or Filiaga. The landing spot is usually indicative of why the player transferred: Kentucky? Maybe got in some hot water. MAC school? Just wants to play.

Hall's exit reduces the number of tackle bullets Michigan has available for the bar-none most critical spot on next year's team. It also opens up another slot for the 2018 class. Michigan's recruiting towards 22 or 23 spots, it looks like.

It's interesting that his recruiting profile mentioned size potential (or something like that) as an area of concern. Prescient! I hope he does well at CMU.

He's the future left tackle.

Fixed it for you*...

(* Obviously, my opinion.  But given his recruiting profile and film, I don't see anyone currently on the roster that I'd say will be better than him.  Of course, I have no inside knowledge, and could be full of hot air, but this is my thought on the deal.)

I hope it goes well for Hall. I have looked at the depth chart, and it is obvious something had to give. As of today, here is the chart at tackle, by seniority:

  • J. Bushell-Beatty
  • G. Newsome
  • N. Ulizio
  • J. Runyan, Jr.
  • A. Stueber
  • C. Filiaga
  • J. Hudson
  • J. Mayfield
  • R Hayes

And we're still going after Petite-Frere and Patterson. 9 - 11 guys for two positions. Really, it is 7 guys for two positions, not counting the 2 - 4 incoming freshmen. Regardless, someone was going to be at the short end of the stick, and stay buried on the bench until a firm handshake after 4 years.

Regarding CMU, it is a good place to go for PT. Things turned out fairly well for Shane Morris going there as QB. He actually just signed today with an agent, so must have at least some hopes of going on with football. Making it to a squad as a backup isn't a bad gig . . . hold a clipboard and get paid at least the NFL minimum. (Morris had 27 passing TD's and two fourth quarter victories.

In two years he could of put on a lot more muscle and weight and developed to play tackle. I guess I don't understand why freshmen OL think they have to play right away. Usually it takes them until they're Juniors to compete for a starting job. But I guess he wanted to play right away and the competition ahead of him scared him off.

Or...he got to UM and started practicing and lifting, and he and the coaches saw that he might never be able to physically get where he needs to play and they had an honest conversation about it and he decided to go to another school and continue to get an education but also be able to play, and thats cool.

That's fair. My main point was that whenever a player leaves, posters here tend to go one of two ways: 1. He was processed or 2. The kid couldn't hack/got scared/he's not a Michigan anyway. When, sometimes things just dont work out, or there is a personal thing, or you just see the writing on the wall and want a better situation. I just don't see the point of coming on here and talking big stuff about how you think a kid was scared when you dont know the whole story, except to hear yourself sound tough.

he stacked up against the other freshmen. It's not a stretch to say he was far behind Hudson, Stueber and Filiaga in getting reps and they are all redshirting. Maybe he came in thinking he was on equal footing with them and sees now that he is far behind. That's a tough hill to climb for future playing time.

As I said elsewhere, it's easy to look at our starters and go, "What's the problem with our S&C?"

Bit by bit, I'm seeing evidence it's the guys who DIDN'T see the field that has Harbaugh disgruntled.  Guys like Gary or Ruiz didn't need any help from no S&C coach; they showed up on campus college-ready.  But Mone supposedly was out of shape and the freshmen weren't on schedule.
