Networks don't just do things for the sake of doing things. They clearly are making ad money off televising this circus or they wouldn't show it. Is it the 40-80 year old woman demographic that loves this stuff?

Yeah. The ash cloud from the large-ish explosion at the summit won't even be an issue, much less the relatively predictable lava effusion more than an hour away from you. Even a trip to Hilo won't be problematic unless there's both another large ash event and an unusual shift in the prevailing winds.
