Joe Milton maturing in '4-way tie' battle at quarterback (The Michigan Insider)

Submitted by GoBlueinEugene on
"I think right now, after spring ball… I think it’s like a 4-way tie," Milton said. "I don’t know if anybody’s leading right now.  Because like, I don’t want to hype myself up over nobody else, but I think it’s a tie right now."

Adding:

"It’s a 4-way tie. Competition’s going to be strong in the fall.  So, just gotta fight for it."

No way, Joe is a redshirt all the way. 48% completion rate in high school is not anywhere near D1 level ready. Big arm? Yes, but like Shane Morris he needs to develop accuracy to be a contributor. Shane could never get there, but hopefully Joe gets it going at some point.

This is as simple as the coach says the job is still up for grabs and he kid is too naive to see the obvious. Great confidence, good job by coach, now to tear his ass down a peg in the fall so he understands his redshirt and is ready to compete next year.

I believe by the Wisconsin game Peters will be our starting QB and finally Harbaugh will stop looking for a QB and allow him to grow...

Is practice buzz.  McCaffrey has yet to take a single snap in a real game, so we really don't know how good he will be when the money is on the table.

That kid is going to play before his time is done here. He’s raw, but he’s got the most upside of any QB in the roster.

If he can be refined, he can be akin to Cam Newton. There I said it.

It's a 4 way tie...according to Joe Milton. Good to see him confident and good on the coaches to keep the competition strong. But fluff is fluffy. Nothing to see here. This is Shea's team.

Every year I hear “it’s a tie at QB” and I think QB competition is good. But really it’s because the perceived starter is meh. This year I’m expecting Harbaugh to say one guy is far out front because that needs to be the truth. It’s time to have a real clear starting qb again going into the season. No question marks.

Harbaugh isn’t going to say that. There is absolutely zero benefit to publicly naming a starting QB. It allows your opponent to scout and gameplan for one QB instead of having to prepare for multiple. It gives Michigan an advantage to not name a starter, so Harbaugh will never do so. Just because Harbaugh doesn’t make it public, doesn’t mean they don’t know. It doesn’t mean it’s a question mark. Like this guy said, Morris and Rudock were listed as co-starters for weeks. And then when Rudock got hurt against Minnesota, Speight was the QB coming off the bench to win the game. That should tell you all you need to know about how they’re going to publicly handle the QB battle.

"Don't want to give away the playbook" thing is just lame.  Lots and lots of teams go into their first game with a clear-cut starter at QB, and it doesn't do them any harm.  Besides, teams are not going to be able to "scout" our practices, and even if they could, it's not as if our offense is going to be significantly different in scheme no matter who we start.  If we had a pro-style passer and a option runner competing for the starting job, and would run totally different offenses depending on who started, then it might make sense to keep the starter under wraps, but that's not the case with us.

You put your best guy out there, and say "here we are...try to beat us"

How can you so confidently say that there is zero benefit to publicly naming a starting QB? The staff isn’t here to coddle these kids, they know what’s going on anyways in regards to who’s in a position to start. It would limit the outside noise in my opinion. Sack up, pick your guy, and move forward. If other QBs in the room don’t agree, tell them to do something about it on the field and prove the coaches wrong. Can’t be trying to play the old mind game and run your program with the fear that someone might transfer. It happens.

unless he were clearly the best QB to start the season, which he isn't going to be.  Even if he were 2nd going into the season (also highly unlikely), we're not going to be pulling our starter until a game is out of reach, at which point, it shouldn't matter if we play our third or fourth stringer instead of our second.  Use the guys who have already burned their redshirts (who should be adequate backups), and give Milton the free year to develop without the pressure of game performance.

may the best of the best ( 4 guys) earn the  playing spot. i am sure jh will play the best man no matter who it is. he HAS to win this year. fan base it asking the same question.

Joe Milton will not start, it will be Patterson. If Patterson goes down, Milton will be the backup. I’ve said it for a while, coaches are high on this kid.

It's cute that he thinks this. I enjoy his competitive spirit though. If he keeps working his butt off like this he will be a starter one day.

Joe Milton has a very tough job ahead of him beating out Patterson, McCaffrey, and Peters. It will not get any easier if Cade McNamara does indeed sign with Michigan next year. But it's true, he's working very hard.

Most don't know about the toughest team Joe Milton faced when he was a high school senior, just 7 months ago, a team named Winter Park, and what his stats were in that game. He was 8 for 30, 96 yds, 0 TDs, 4 INTs, 000.8 QB rating.

It’s great to finally be able to say “this QB controversy stuff is cute.” Shea is our QB, and he will be a damn good one. And whether it’s Peters or McCaffery backing him up, we are in a better situation at the QB position than we have been since the W. administration

Shea will start at Notre Dame barring an injury. However, injuries happen and I won't be surprised when Peters steps in during the season and we dont miss a beat. Shea isnt the biggest of guys and with our questionable O-Line and the physical nature of the Big Ten, i think its likely we will see our #2 start multiple games this year.

"I don’t want to hype myself up over nobody else, but I think it’s a tie right now."

Replace "maturing" with "uses poor judgment".

He's young. It happens.
