Joe Milton maturing in '4-way tie' battle at quarterback (The Michigan Insider)

Submitted by GoBlueinEugene on
"I think right now, after spring ball… I think it’s like a 4-way tie," Milton said. "I don’t know if anybody’s leading right now.  Because like, I don’t want to hype myself up over nobody else, but I think it’s a tie right now."

Adding:

"It’s a 4-way tie. Competition’s going to be strong in the fall.  So, just gotta fight for it."

also factor into completion percentage and his WRs dropped quite a few balls.  Nobody is expecting him to start, but you act like you have been to practice or something.  Sam Webb has been and has stated if Milton has as good a fall camp as he did in the spring don't be surprised to see a package for him during the season.  I think I'll take Sam's word before JonnyHintz.

"I dont look too much into his completetion percentage most of his throws are bombs."

That same excuse has been used for every single strong-armed/inaccurate QB throughout the history of football (99% of the time, these type of QBs just end up being as bad in college as they were in high school). Also, let's assume for a second that you are correct and most of his throws were "bombs," wouldn't that, at the very least, make his yards per completion really high? A career 15.3 yards per completion is nothing special for such elite arm talent.

"if he works on his touch during certain situations he will be special"

As hard as it may be to believe, most QBs don't just significantly improve their touch and accuracy going from high school to college. I can only think of a few: Matt Ryan (50% in HS, 59.9% in college), Lamar Jackson (47.1% in HS, 57% in college), Kirk Cousins (54.1% in HS, 64.1% in college). However, along with being an inaccurate passer in high school, Milton also had one of the worst TD/INT ratios (1.8) I've ever seen for such a highly-rated QB. While the previously mentioned QBs were also inaccurate, they at least had higher TD/INT ratios than Joe (3.1 for Ryan, 3.4 for Jackson and 2.2 for Cousins). I've yet to see a QB with Joe's combination of low completion percentage, low yards per attempt, low TD/INT ratio and low QB rating develop into a "special" (or even above average) QB in college.

Maybe that is why Sam Webb has seen Milton doing wildcat/rpo type plays in practice. Maybe the coaches are seeing Milton is not a full time QB, and will have to be used in other ways. That wouldn't be a surprise as some have already been saying Milton will change postions like Zach Gentry did.

Even the biggest Joe Milton fan has said he is a project. Maybe it's turning out to be too big a project.

Just speculating.

He was the only the third best pitcher on the Fraser baseball team until his senior year. He had the most potential but was raw. Pat ended up winning two WS and a Cy Young award with the Jays. Sometimes raw potential can work out in a big way.

We might be putting too much hope into Joe Milton. He might not have the ability to back our hopes. It's a long road ahead of him until he meets the expectations.

Is it possible he may have to transfer to a different school to reach those expectations? There's more really good QBs coming into Michigan over the next 5 years. Can he pass them all?

Are you talking about Joe Milton possibly needing to transfer? He is an EE who has drawn rave reviews. Could he fail to match expectations? Of course, but you could literally say that about every single player in all of football. Can we at least wait for players’ redshirt redshirt freshman year before we start questioning them?

I haven't labeled Joe Milton as a failure. You have somehow read that into it.  Maybe you have me mixed up with someone else.

Relax.

Do you see Brandon Peters or Dylan McCaffrey transferring out? All 3 can't play at once. Is it possible 1 will transfer out? Or is it impossible any of them could transfer out?

If Peters gets beaten out in 2018 and doesn’t look like the favorite for 2019, I could see him leaving as a 2 year grad transfer next year. McCaffrey won’t transfer unless Milton passes him up. Any speculation about Milton is downright silly given that his HS senior class haven’t even had their prom yet.

Could it happen that Joe Milton will end up transferring? Yes.

Is it possible Brandon Peters could end up transferring? Yes.

Is it possible Dylan McCaffrey could end up transferring? Yes.

Is it possible none of them will transfer? Yes.

Are you saying it is impossible Joe Milton could end up transferring?

I hope Harbaugh changes it up this year and names a starter at least a month before week 1. It would be nice to have a starter that isn't constantly looking over his shoulder with full support from the staff.

I’m on mobile sorry but your comment is very refreshing! Go Blue and all of our young men. Some will never play but in the end they’ll all be better representatives of the University of Michigan and great Michigan Men!

I like Joe and all, but this is just him being over-confident. Let’s be honest here. He’s Shane Morris 2.0 right now. He’s a kid with a ton of potential, an absolute rocket for an arm, and questionable mechanics and accuracy. Just like Shane. With some proper coaching (which Shane wasn’t able to receive) Joe could be an absolutely great QB. He has to work on his throwing mechanics, his accuracy, his footwork, his touch, and his consistency. On top of all of that, he has to learn the offense, gain chemistry with his WRs, and adjust to the speed of the college game. If we’re being realistic here, Joe Milton has zero chance at starting.

True but if we have to rely on 3-4 guys at qb then this season will be a disaster. With our schedule there is no way we would compete with backups at qb no matter how talented they are

That would be incredibly shocking and downright wasteful considering all reports are he’s the fourth best QB right now. He does have all the potential to be one of the greats at Michigan. But that has absolutely nothing to do with being ready to play QB as a true freshman.

I admit to picking this comment out of a dozen or so on the same topic.

But yeah, no chance Milton is starting this fall. He's a lock to redshirt. Even guys who are going to be really good, such as Jameis Winston, take RS years to get ready. Milton is distinctively raw.

I'd love for him to develop into a great QB, but it will take time. Hopefully he lives up to the practice hype.

But if there's a four-way tie for QB, I am as likely to be one of the four as he is.

I would be shocked if Patterson and even peters weren’t miles ahead of the rest. I love Milton’s attitude he’s a competitor and he could very well be our starter next year but for now I just want Patterson to win the job and work on improving the offense with him. I think a qb battle that lingers all the way to September 1st would be a disaster for this team. We need to pick one guy by mid August and start fine tuning the offense to work around that guy. You don’t want a qb controversy with a trip to south bend.

All information coming out of Fort Schembechler has been Shea is QB1, and Peters has pulled away from McCaffrey, who was himself ahead of Milton. As it stands, we have a depth chart sorted out. It’s just not “official” and hasn’t been publicized.

No doubt Patterson is #1.

But McCaffrey might be #2, not Peters.

What's happening with Peters is a mixed bag review, his future at Michigan not looking bright. But McCaffrey is turning out to be a confident leader. Leadership is the area Jim Harbaugh has been trying to bring out of Brandon Peters.

But Peters has a beautiful throw.
