Joe Milton maturing in '4-way tie' battle at quarterback (The Michigan Insider)

Submitted by GoBlueinEugene on
"I think right now, after spring ball… I think it’s like a 4-way tie," Milton said. "I don’t know if anybody’s leading right now.  Because like, I don’t want to hype myself up over nobody else, but I think it’s a tie right now."

Adding:

"It’s a 4-way tie. Competition’s going to be strong in the fall.  So, just gotta fight for it."

I think it’s always a “hearty competition” with Harbaugh in charge. It may have been some “extra” effort to get Shea, but i’s also a lot of effort to get 4-star, high-school kids that may never crack the lineup. Coach is going to craft the best team he can. He is willing to put in a lot of effort regardless of the outcome through the subsequent competition. He went and got Ruddddock and he started right away. He went and got O’Korn and he didn’t. No way is Shea “guaranteed” to be the starter.

Ehhh...he talks meritocracy, but Peters was better than JOK the moment he stepped on campus. It took Speight breaking his back to even get him out the game when he was struggling mightily. He got Patterson because he believes he’s ready and groomed to start from day 1. He may preach a “hearty competition” to the public, but he wants victories and there was too much uncertainty surrounding the QB situation without him.

What the hell does Zavier Simpson the basketball player have anything to do with this?? Patterson is a much better Quarterback than Peters, end of story. I don't get it - like are you a Peters fan or a Michigan fan? Do you want Harbaugh to start the players you've attached your ego to or the players who give the team the best chance to win?

I love swagger.  I love kids believing in themselves.  Joe is confident in what he brings to the position and I think that is cool.  But if any real and true reporter who has credibility echos what Joe is claiming "That it is really and truly a 4 way tie for starting QB" we are EFFED.

Shea Patterson will be our starting QB.  Period.  End of Story.

Wolverine1987, you made the point I was trying to much clearer.  Joe Milton is an athletic freak, but no way he is "tied" for the staring role...heck, there is no way he is in the ballpark of being second string.

His highlight tape (all one can really go on) was so raw (cut laiden with freakish ability) that he is gonna have to make incredible leaps and bounds to even start by his Junior year.  Is that possible...sure.  Is that probable...no.

I think we all know the answer to that lol Door number 1 has a QB with starting experience and 2+ years in the system. Door 2 has a QB with MORE starting experience plus mobility, but only a couple months in the system. Door 3 has a QB who has a year in the system but has never seen the field due to redshirt. Door 4 has a QB who just got here, and the last time he played he completed about half his passes against high school competition. I'll believe that all 4 QBs are getting equal reps. I will not believe that all 4 have equal abilities, nor an equal chance to become the Game 1 starter.

he had a good spring and has the confidence that he is right there to be the starter. But, I would be really suprised if he was really in the mix at this point.

He is a heck of an athlete with a great arm, but he is really raw and has a ton to learn about the college game and even playing the QB position at this level. I think he really needs a full year to work on mechanics and learning the offense and getting up to the speed of college football.

Would not be a bit suprised though if he is in the running to start in 2019. He has a high ceiling.

This title is very misleading. It’s milton saying he views the race as a 4 way tie. It’s good that the coaches are making it clear everyone has a shot to compete and it’s good Milton believes in himself but this says literally nothing about performance or how the depth chart currently stands.

Right.  It's a 4-way tie according to Joe Milton.  Which, I like that Joe Milton is saying that--good for him to have that confidence in himself.  However, there is a difference between Joe Milton saying the QB race is a 4-way tie and Jim Harbaugh saying the QB race is a 4-way tie.

There’s also a huge difference between JH saying it’s a 4-way tie, and it actually being a 4-way tie. Jim and the staff have shown in the past that they’re not going to reveal anything. Hell, we haven’t known who the starting QB will be prior to kickoff of the season opener a single time under Harbaugh. They’re not going to reveal any information they don’t have to. They’ll say it’s even just to avoid doing that.

Has there ever been a QB that threw 85 yards? Do you know of one? Seriously. I have heard of 80 yards, a QB in the 80's named Marc Wilson with the Raiders. It was said he could throw 80, though I never saw him do it on tv. I've never heard of 85. Those 15 yards beyond 70 would be very hard to get.

...and in no way is it reality.

Shea Patterson will start, barring injury. If there is an injury, it will be one of the other two QBs who is not a true freshman.

There is zero chance a very talented, but raw, freshman QB is going to start on the road, in a night game, against ND unless something has gone very, very, very, very wrong.

I dont look too much into his completetion percentage most of his throws are bombs. high school recievers would have a hard time catching a pass from an arm like his. if he works on his touch during certain situations he will be special

Fine, then don’t look into completion percentage. But go ahead and look into the film and scouting which says his accuracy is an issue, he’s inconsistent and shows poor mechanics. All things that contribute to poor completion percentage. I get it. Fans want to get excited about the brand new shiny four star QB. It was the same with Morris. It was the same with Peters. It was the same with McCaffrey. Now Milton comes in ranked lower (for you ranking junkies) and even more raw and you’re still drooling over the kid. He’s not ready. Hes nowhere close to being ready. He has potential and I’m hoping like hell he reaches it. But he’s a true freshman. It’s not happening.

Never did I say he was anywhere near ready to start. He has arguable the most upside out of all the QBs on the roster just based on his arm strength alone, thats something you can teach. You can however teach is mechanical issues which is why he will RS. Him and McCaffrey both have a chance to be special. I dont see that it factor in peters.
