Men's hoops finishes #2 in final coaches poll

Submitted by Real Tackles Wear 77 on

No, the national runner up does not automatically get the #2 spot in the poll each year, so it's great to see us finish the season ranked so high. Another indicator of the respect Beilein commands from his peers. I don't think the AP poll comes out after the season, so we will end up #7 on that. Both will significantly help us in the Director's Cup as it weights several revenue sports more heavily.

AFAIK, we have only been ranked #1 for one week in Beilein's tenure (in 12-13). Congrats to the maize and blue on a great season!

Also of note:

UVA #5, Loyola #7, Purdue #9, MSU #11, OSU #21

I thought the Directos Cup was calculated based on the farthest in the tourney you got, not AP rankings.

like this or similar:

Winner: 100pts,

runner up 75,

lost in FF: 50,

lost in E8: 32,

lost in S16: 16,

lost in R32: 8,

lost in R 64: 4

make the touney: 2

When it's all said and done, we were amongst the last two standing this season.  We're indisputably #2 in the country.  #1 would've been better but there are all but one team in the nation that'd switch places and seasons with us.

Certainly MSU diehards will argue that there should be footnotes to our magical run, that we were gifted with a really easy path to success.  And you know what?

They're right - we did have a really easy path:

the word "Scum" has UM in it... so there is that...plus did you really go to Michigan. You may have went but did you get a degree? You may have a degree, but was it a graduate degree? You may have a graduate degree, but are you the President? You may be the President but did you create earth? NO! Then you are a walmart Michigan fan.

It was a great year. I agree and have agreed with the analysis that Beilein did the most he could with the talent he had on hand.

I was gravely concerned that we were going to have another bad shooting night, particularly from behind the 3 point line. And that's exactly what happened. We were 3 of 23 from 3 point range. If we had been at 37%, that would have added 16.5 points. We were 11 of 18 for free throws. If we hit 75%, that adds 2.5 points.

I really hope that Michigan can continue to improve in recruiting. We seem to have a great incoming class. But it is hard not to be envious of Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, and North Carolina. The classes they bring in year in and year outl make it hard to compete.

Kentucky. Kids are on campus for a few months and then move on. There is no teamwork, chemistry, development, nothing. They will win once in a while based on sheer talent- but when you look at the results, not as great as you might think. Duke has been to the Final Four once in the last 8 years. Kentucky hasn’t been great the last 3 years. Kansas is always good but always seem to underachieve in the tournament. I like the UNC (less the academic scandal) and Villanova model - which we seem to be replicating. You mix some older developmental players that give you leadership and steadiness with some top 100 recruiting types to ensure you have the talent and athleticism to compete with the top teams. Add good coaching and you have really got something good going. Beilein said it: “You are not amassing the most talent, you are building a team.”

after the NU loss in early Feb. They really played together and played so tough. Defense, rebounding and enough moxie for a great win streak. #2 to that Nova team is no reason to mope. Puts us ahead of 350 or so D1 teams.

For all the people who say Michigan did not deserve to be in the National Championship game, who would you put in there instead?

All of Villanova's opponents lost to them by double digits, so none of them.

Duke . . . who lost to Kansas?

UVA, UNC . . . who could not even make it out of the early rounds?

Certainly none of the teams that Michigan beat head to head.

Who would you put in instead?

Michigan was in there because they earned their way in there.

We are clearly not #1, but we have a solid case for #2.

Out in the first weekend for the 3rd year in a row, and they give them 11? I guess they are simply looking at potential and maybe total losses. Oh, that and I suppose if two of those losses were to the 2nd best team in the country (only a very tiny bit sarcastic) it makes you look better I suppose.

As to fans of other schools and what they might think and say, now who really gives a fuck.Taking it upon myself for a second, I'll speak for the entire board here.Inamuch as we either beat their teams or they were beaten by lesser teams prior to us having a chance, fuck them, fuck them very hard and not because we don't like them, but because that is what happens to whiny little bitches. And to those who spend money to have a party to cheer against the wolverines with the only reason being they are not fortunate enough to be a wolverine or a wolverine fan, I am so happy they woke up with a hangover and less spending money both.

Good job blue. Proud to be a Michigan Wolverine. 2018.  Great, Great Season.
