Does Mo Return?

Submitted by BlueWon on

The guy is such a competitor and has played okay tonight but one has to think the result might compel him to come back and give it another run. This team wasn't supposed to do much and made it to the finals.

They would be rock solid next year with him.

In this case, it actually is.  Beilein has offered one more player for 2018-19 than he has scholarships available.  He's assuming there will be attrition of at least one player prior to graduation, either by a draft declaration or a transfer.  This is new for him -- he refused to do it before, and Michigan ended up losing out both Tyus Battle (when he decommitted) and Josh Langford (I think it was), who wanted to commit but was told there wasn't space.

I'd love to have Wagner come back, but I really hope that one person exits the team voluntarily, whether it's Wagner, Matthews (to the NBA), or a transfer candidate.  I'd really hate to have Beilein turn into Chris Collins and start trying to bully a player into leaving.

I do think he'll likely leave, though.  Typically, if a player investigates his draft stock, then improves markedly in the areas that people saw as his weaknesses, his next step is to move on.

I think the issue was saying that we don’t have a scholarship for Moe. If Moe stays, we don’t have a scholarship for somebody else that is committed or on the team. There’s no world in which Moe is forced out because we don’t have a scholarship for him.

He should go through the workouts and enter the draft if he’s projected a first round pick. If not a first rounder, he should return.

agree with you if the NBA was the only alternative to staying. But with all the money available in Europe to someone with his skill set, if he tries and doesn't succeed at NBA ball and then opts for Europe, I would fully understand and support such a decision. In the end, it comes down to what Moe thinks is best for Moe.

If he can get drafted and make money, then he should. I think the only thing he could improve is his consistency shooting, as well as his defensive presence. He plays soft for being 6'11". Agreed with others though, if he stays next year's team will be very good.

I"d be surprised if he does but he's the number 1 pick next year and will be unstoppable. This guy will be hungry and that team unstoppable next year. I'll say a prayer tonight before I pass out. Him and Mathews come back, X developes his jumper, title in the bag. Who stops that team?

Think about it this way: He's about to make a heck of a lot more money in the next year than he would have made if he'd signed a Euro contract a few years ago. Got to feel good about that.

but he should do whats best for him. I personally think he should stay another year, get that degree, and go to the NBA if he can, and go back to Germany as a fall back, but if he can get drafted in the first round, then go for it Big Moe

He's obviously a smart kid, he'll have a year left of school. It's not like he's a one-and-done. If the NBA doesn't pan out, it's not like he'll have a lot of ground to cover should he want to go back. At this point, he's a mid-first-rounder, right? He's not going to go from that to a top-5 pick with another season. This is his chance, and it seems obvious he should take it.

I’d love for Moe to come back, but he needs to do what’s best for him. If that’s going pro, I thank him for all he’s done for Michigan and wish him nothing but the best. That said, even without him, next year’s team should be stacked. Simpson, Poole, Matthews, Livers, Teske all back plus three stud freshmen in DeJulius, Johns and Brazdekis coming in. That doesn’t even include Eli Brooks, who I think will be much better. Be interesting to see what happens with Austin Davis and Ibi Watson. I’d love to see them stick around and make a push for PT.

Why does everyone think he's gone? He's not a sure thing first round pick at all at this point. I've seen him in the 2nd in most mocks. No guaranteed money in the 2nd.

I thought if we won he should definitely leave. I still think it’s in his best interest to go pro he’s done more than enough to earn the right to leave. Wagner will go down as one of the greatest Michigan basketball players ever regardless GO BLUE!!

No one else has attempted a translation of this apt quote, so I'll take a not-too-literal crack at it (Brecht is not easy German to translate):

"And so it comes to a good end ---everything is reconciled. Of course if sufficient money is at hand, the end is mostly good!"

But I disagree. As many ofthers here have stated, with Moe, money is probably not the first objective. He'll make money whether he plays here or in Europe. Moe's first objective is whether he (or his coaches, NBA scouts, his parents) think he's accomplished pretty much what he can in college and whether it's time to get on with the next phase of his life, which undoubtedly is professional basketball.

As an aside, I wish Moe would talk with big man Frank Kaminsky, who went back to Wisconsin for his senior season largely for the fun of it and also made it to the final NCAA game. For Frank --- who as I recall was a first-round draftee --- that was undoutedly the right move, and he could give Moe some good advice.

Big fan either way. Think he could learn in another year here, but nothing sounds better than on the job training with pay. Get your money young man. It's been a pleasure seeing you guys hoop.

Not so simple a choice, in my view. To get paid sooner rather than later vs. how will he get the best, patient coaching to have the (best) kind of professional career he wants for himself?

Being German (with their stronger safety net) means he may not be as desperate for the payday as your typical American. He's not a poor kid from the inner city who needs the money to help his family.

Sure the money is tempting- probably too tempting- but still he needs a lot of development of his skills- defensively in particular, and maybe more important, to develop some more emotional maturity.

Of course we love Moe and support his decision whatever it is. But he's still got a lot of things to improve on as far as defense, strength and athleticism, and continuing his progress in his words "not being emotionally drunk". I still think there's a big upside which can better be developed under Beilein. At 6'11, he can be an unstoppable perimeter player along the lines of Dirk.. when he's on he's amazing but another year at Michigan can only help his game develop and be more consistent. So I disagree that he has nothing to gain by staying Would Stauskas be in a better position now if he stayed? He got his 1st contract but not sure about a second.

Origionally I thought he was definitely gone, but the more I think about it I think there is a decent chance he stays.  This years draft class is loaded, especially at the 4/5 where Moe will play.

Wagner's gone, IMHO. Another year of college "development" is what he will get in spades in the G-league, which is where he's headed after he's drafted in the second round. He'll get whatever additional development he needs there and be NBA-ready in the next year or two. Best of luck to him.

He will leave because the risk is too great not to give it a try. However, Mo is in a very unique position as a European. If the NBA does not work out, he can obviously play in Europe. While Germany's salaries are lower than that of the top Euro leagues, he could potentially make more in additional endorsements in the motherland speaking the language. Some of the bigger leagues will pay more, but he likely wont make the endorsement money in one of the top leagues unless he is a star. The top group of European players will make at least 1MM a season post tax (up to 2MM) and the clubs usuallly take the tax out of their salaries...so those salary numbers are what they net. If Mo was ONLY given a MID TIER contract, he could very likely take home 500K+/year after taxes + endorsements. Also, not sure if this is still the standard over there, but I had a couple friends play in Europe. Included in their deals was usually the use of a car and an apartment. Mo goes and plays in Germany, he is at least looking at 500k+ a year (net), plus endorsements, a car (in Germany likely a Mercedes) and maybe an apartment or housing stipend (yes that sounds crazy). Then there's also China where he would likely make more than playing in Europe. If Mo can't cut it in the NBA, he should do just fine financially. No he wont be getting 50MM contracts down the line, but a succesful European career (or China) and he's sitting on millons when its all done if he's smart with his money.

says it is decidedly so that he will return to Ann Arbor next season. He'll be aiming for a lottery pick.

My sources also indicate that he is holding out hope to get the role of Augustus Gloop in next winter's university theater production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; so no way he passes that up.

I think he’s a mid first round pick if his height isn’t greatly exaggerated. Potentially late lottery depending on how he measures and works out. He’s a big that has NBA 3 point range and solid basketball IQ. He’s not great defensively but he showed a lot of toughness and good hands to make me think he could be adequate defensively as a 4. I’m most curious of his height. He’s listed at 6’11. To me he doesn’t look that tall. If he ends up measuring close to that, I like his potential as a rotational NBA player. If he’s more like 6’8, could fall to the 2nd round.

mock drafts he is listed as follows:

46th, 27th, 29th, 46th and 48th. You would think you would want to at least be a sure fire 1st rounder to make the jump early and I am not sure he is at this point.
