Speight Still Hasn't Found a Transfer School

Submitted by Caesar on

I had heard from a Sam Webb podcast a while ago that Wilton still hasn't found a school and an MLive article says he'd come back if She wasn't in the picture (link). From what I recall, Memphis was an option at one time, but that has since closed up.

Anyway, how would you say this impacts--if at all--the Michigan QB contest of 2018? Are there rules that would limit his ability to come back to the team? Would anyone here be interested to see Wilton back at the helm?

If catastrophe hit to Shea, Peters and Dylan, I don't think Wilton would be that much of a difference maker, the season would be mediocre.   I have met Wilton and think he is great guy, but I don't think he would have a Jake Rudock type season.

If shea is not eligible he would be the best option. Knows the offense, Peters is a backup(if you believe otherwise please explain), and we don’t know what mcaffrey can do yet. I believe this team has a shot at going to the playoff this year and it would be great to have him even if shea is eligible. I would much prefer him stepping in if shea were to be injured over anyone else. I don’t see anything special in Peters. Looks like a Wisconsin qb to me with no upside

But does Wilton know the post-Pep offense?  It sure didn't seem like it last season.  I don't see why he should be thought to have a better grasp of the current offense than Peters and McCaffrey, since they have been under it as long as Wilton.  Wilton knows the previous offense better, but he seemed paralyzed in the current offense last season.

I think Wilton is a great guy.  I honor him for playing injured at OSU in 16.  But he was lost last year.  There were two true freshman QB's playing great in the NCG.  I would rather give a chance to the younger guys than face the depressing prospect of Wilton overthrowing open deep balls and refusing to throw to wide open guys.  We need to win this coming season.

Did anybody on our offense know what they were doing last year including coaches.  Listen their wide recieving core last year was awful, and their O-line was awful.  Unless you have denard back their who can run out of all the issues with protection they had then it did not matter who played QB last year.

Whenever I think of Wilton, I recall the 2 picks out of our end zone.

If we eliminate either one, we win. Wish him all the best. Somewhere else.

Even if Patterson has to sit, we have 3 young highly recruited QB options.

Still waiting for us to develop one of our own kids.

I have a hunch it might be Dylan this year.

Michigan 59 yards. Ohio State 6 yards. How the hell is that even possible. We allowed 3 unassisted points in regulation time. Gave them 14 and went into an overtime  at 17-17 that never should have been necessary.  The first down call wouldn't ever have happened. Home coking officials put the screws to us. All this stuff just reinforced my hatred for the Buckeyes.

I was watching Urban Myer on the sideline late in the game and he was on his hands and knees begging for noise when we were on offense.

How Delaney would allow that officiating crew in the biggest game of the season is disgusting.

whole heartedly. As much as I appreciate what Wilton has done here it is time to move on. If for some reason Shea is not available then my gut feeling is Dylan is leading this team into Notre Dame in September. Harbaugh is going to have very little tolerance for not protecting the ball this year. I am expecting really positive changes in him and the offense this year. Go Blue!!!

The pick 6 was absolutely not his fault tho. Harbaugh called for play action out of his end zone against one of the best defensive lines in the Big Ten. Speight turned his shoulders around, faced with taking a safety or trying to rifle a pass in. Lose-lose situation that was caused by Harbaugh

There's this thing that qbs do. It's called throwing the ball away. Yes, you have to make a quick decision. Harbaugh would not have had him as the starter in the first game, let alone the last game of the regular season if he didn't him capable of making a quick read and do the proper thing, which for qbs always includes tossing the ball away.

It would be a huge shot in the arm if Dylan can play at a high level.  For me, the Peters ship sailed at "the slide."  You've got to have more fire than he has to lead a team to victory in tough games.  For this reason, I mainly think that we really need Shea to be declared eligible.  But if the NCAA comes through again with a nonsensical decision punishing clean programs and players, then our hopes are largely bound up in Dylan, I think.  And I think there is good chance he will be a real dude.

He'd probably like to be at UM. He may be the only one hoping Patterson is ineligible. I'm sure he's just waiting on that. Patterson will be given the go ahead and Speight will find a school. Even though it's late and he broke neck bones last season, some school will take Speight.

I agree about Shea, though I fear the irrational malice of the NCAA toward clean programs.  But don't you think it strange that Wilton hasn't made it a priority to participate in spring practice at whatever team?  It seems like he wants to be somewhere the starting job is just handed to him.  I say this in part because of the sullen comments he made about having to compete for the UM starting position.  Come on, man, talk to Tom Brady if you have a beef.  At some point, you've got to suck it up and play your way into the lineup, realizing that the coach has to have the team's success at the forefront of his mind.  I just don't see this in Wilton, and his non-participation in spring practice at a new school doesn't show a team perspective to me.

It is outright baffling that no school wants a grad-transfer QB that was a starter at Michigan and has 3-year of tutelage under Harbaugh.

It's also weird to think that we have a few recruited QB's on the roster who have been mentored under Harbaugh, yet it still feels like everything is riding on a transfer from Ole Miss being ruled eligible.

1) Maybe other schools are scared off by the neck injury and don't see it as a worthwhile risk to bring in a transfer with that kind of history. 2) The market for a QB with his skills isn't that vast in today's college football world. He's far from a spread QB. That narrows his options quite a bit. However, I still think point 1 is the larger issue.

He has explored Virginia, Texas Tech, Baylor, Okla St, Ariz St and Wake Forest. I would NOT expect him back. He waited too long on the Tx Tech opportunity and the window closed. Same with ASU.

That ship has sailed. Right, wrong, indifferent, he made his choice and that was to leave. Not Michigan's fault he can't find a team willing to give him a scholarship. Even if Shea is not eligible, I don't think he should come back. And we trust Peters and Dylan to get it done and hope for no injuries.

The Claw

If he was staying, I think it would have come out in the media.

Bigger speculation for me is does he have a scholarship? I would think he had to petition to leave and UM released him of his scholarship.  So technically he doesn't have one right now.  Harbaugh would have to grant him one again.  Would he or wouldn't he based on jumping ship is a very interesting question. Would love to be a fly on the wall in the coaches room if that was a discussion that was happening. Personally I don't Harbaugh would after leaving the program and Coach liking Brandon and Dylan. But I could be completely wrong. Who knows?

StirredNotShaken

Let him compete. If he loses the job then he'd be a fantastic backup. I don't want Peters near the field this year and we know nothing about McCaffrey. I'd feel great about having a backup QB who has a season and a half of starting experience under his belt.

Tall with a slow release got alot of balls batted down.IMO the root of our problems is poor O-line play. When you cannot run the football or protect the qb you cannot beat good teams.

Hopefully EW will correct this. One neglected thought is how we have missed on local kids who went south and thrived.Jordan on the OL,Weber and Webb.

I don't want Speight back. He was good, he wasn't great, and he bailed on this program. I don't care who he is. "I don't like this situation and I'm going to play somewhere else" is not a retractable statement. Thanks for everything. Take care.

I also don't care that he hasn't found a home yet. Neither has Calvin Anderson and nobody seems concerned with that timeline.

Third, people are seriously burying Brandon Peters? With 3 years of eligibility remaining? I don't understand your brain.

Finally, I thought I missed football threads and I now know that I most certainly do not. Hope this tourney run lasts a century.

Sorry man but at the end there last year it became evident why BP was behind Speight and OK for much of the year. Can he possibly take a massive second year starter leap? Hope so.

Its a terrible shame. Barring injury, Speight is one of the best QBs ever to play here.

He led the most efficient offense I've ever seen us have until he was injured. He was never the same after that.

I still think his leaving is a terrible mistake, but if I'm a college coach at a smaller program, I take him instantly and hope his shoulder and psyche have healed.

other games than the ones I was watching. He had some bright spots but was terribly inconsistent. As many have documented above there were too many over throws of wide open receivers. His career passing was 50.6% which is not going to get us to the next level. Much better options and I look forward to seeing them this fall. Go Blue!!!!
