More likely to survive: Dantonio or Izzo?
For me, this is just a no-brainer. Izzo is only one who has built up enough equity with the university off the field (or court) via community and charity work to warrant a second guess on canning his ass. Dantonio appears even more tone-deaf and beligerant with how he's dealing with OTL report so one hint of evidence backing up the ESPN story could seal the deal for him

Nice to see at least one poster here bounce off the high horse of self righteousness, clouded by envy of the success of Dantonio and Izzo, clouded by irrational hatred of MSU, to make a sensible statement.

Have you watched either coaches statements? Mork stated that it's all about the vicItims, need to remember the victims. But then he said this story is totally true and these are all lies. What a 2 faces SOB. I think both coaches totally knew what was going on and were ok with the coverup. Public outcry will continue until they are both gone.

appearing tone deaf and clueless in a statement is not the same as a firing offense. They will definitely (IMO, a prediction) not even be close to gone unless new information comes out that is not out now.

So covering up sexual assault is the only possible thing that could get them fired? It's pretty clear that Dantonio and Izzo let players (and staff) get away with things they shouldn't have, which fostered a culture where sexual assault was viewed as ok. It took a 3-9 season for Dantonio to realize he finally needed to get rid of some of the bad apples, before that he was content to keep them around because he was winning games. Those are fireable offenses.
January 28th, 2018 at 12:37 PM ^
that that is true IMO. That's your opinion and you're entitled to it.

Dantanio's change in approach, even though it's logical. That wouldn't have led to suspending and firing Curtis Blackwell. The Nassar story had just blown up and MSU finally decided to make their AD and Dantonio follow proper procedures.

The Appling/Payne case may itself be enough to sink Izzo. Typically you have he said she said in these cases, but this was she and he said against he said. How that was never prosecuted is beyond reason. How they were both kept on the team is another, even worse question. Will someone come forward and reveal Izzo was maneuvering behind the scenes in that? He must have. Will someone who saw that and kept silent at the time now come forward?
That's all it would take. Izzo interceded or interfered to keep those players out of trouble. He called a cop. He kept it in the athletic department. He bullied an administrator. If he did any of those and that person will now come forward, he's gone in disgrace.

That happened with the old president and AD still in place. It happened with Paterno still contesting allegations against him.
It happened because of the firestorm of bad publicity. And the pending investigation that was not going to completely exonerate him. Penn State knew it was only going to get worse if they tried to hang onto Paterno.
This is essentially what MSU is facing, except that their president and AD went first and have only been replaced by interims so far. Once the new AD is in place, Dantonio is out. Izzo will likely get to finish the season, but may announce his resignation before it's over. Doing it right before the NCAA tournament wouldn't surprise me at all.
January 28th, 2018 at 12:16 PM ^
Earlier I thought they'd survive but I now don't think they will. At best (for them), MSU will do nothing, but all of this will dog them to the point that they'll end up resigning to get the heat off.

I'm pretty sure that whoever is hired to walk into that mess won't look at either of those coaches as bums. You pretty much sum up your bias with that last word.

The Michigan fan in me wants Dantonio to be around until at least after October 20, 2018 so we get another shot at him.
The other side of me wants justice served as expeditiously as possible, whether that means he stays or goes, based on all available evidence.
January 28th, 2018 at 11:42 AM ^
They will both be reprimanded, but both will survive.
Izzo will retire on his own terms. Dantonio will stay on.
They can both technically claim to have followed the MSU harassment "process", however tepidly and disengenuously.
Some unsuspecting underlings will be shown the door. Because life is not fair.
January 28th, 2018 at 2:12 AM ^
I think they're both staying. That said, taking the bait...
On the one hand: Izzo would be more defended by the fans and would warrant more definitive, damning proof of impropriety to get rid of him. Therefore, Dantonio is certainly more likely to be fired.
That said, if the question is who is more likely to leave/be gone generally...I think Izzo is more likely to retire than Dantonio is.
Dantonio strikes me more of the "if you want me gone, you'll have to fire me"/refusal to accept any accountability type, whereas I could see Izzo being more likely to resign somewhat "gracefully" if the pressure gets hotter.

Neither's chances are very good. They are probably gone.
January 28th, 2018 at 5:03 AM ^
Zero chance to survive.
You can't change the culture and keep these 2 around.
The new president & AD won't let it happen.
If they do let them stay, it's a real bad look.
January 28th, 2018 at 7:39 AM ^
Do you really think they're going to hire a new president and AD who will clean house? That's not how people react to these situations. They circle the wagons.
January 28th, 2018 at 9:03 AM ^
Thats exactly what I expect to happen. In light of public opinion MSU cant afford to hire a President who may have ties to the University. Their only option will be an outside hire who is known for zero tolerance. And that person will have a mandate to do whatever is necessary to scrub the Universitys image clean.
The days of circling the wagons are gone. Too many independant investigations asking questions. You have the AG of Michigan, the NCAA and that little pitbull ESPN who after the previous court battles with MSU may have a bone to pick.
The thing is MSU has to convince the public they are clean. Theres more to it than athletics, there is also admissions and donations to consider.

January 28th, 2018 at 11:21 AM ^
Yep, it's going to be so awful for so long up there that nobody tied to this era can survive it. Nobody in their right mind would take the President or AD job without first cleaning house entirely. The scrutiny is going to be relentless. Plus, we're talking $1 billion + here kids. Painful beyond the pale.

that is found for either. could happen, but the general 'bad enviroment/systemic problems' isn't enough to push the two best coaches they've ever had out the door.
find that smoking gun and all bets are off though.
EDIT: i do think that recruiting will be impacted by this for both sports, both in our galaxy and beyond.
January 28th, 2018 at 8:27 AM ^
I no longer think this.
I now believe that it will not be the MSU administration that pushes them out the door, it will be the rest of the country, if not the world. The MSU Nassar victims are now the most sympathetic group in the entire world, and probably for good reason. Scores and scores of lives were ruined/impacted severely in a very negative way.
Those sympathetic to the victims, and who isn't, will DEMAND that MSU start over with those not tainted by the filth of sexual assault cover-up or enabling. Izzo and Dantonio are both tainted with that, not in Nassar, but both tainted.
Eventually, wins on the field and on the court will look pretty meaningless compared to cleaning house. And that is the way it should be.
Izzo will retire or take a pro job, and Dantoni can find a job easily enough if he really wants to work. But it won't be at MSU. The school cannot pick up the pieces unless these two are gone, and gone they are IMO.
