OTL E:60 clip from this morning - focuses solely in MSU MBB

Submitted by Dennis on
Lauren Allswede provides an interview, and Travis Walton is on tape denying both the physical assault charges from January 2010, and gang rape accusation from April 2010. Interestingly, the video focused solely on MBB. http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=22240940

John F-ing Beilein should automatically be given a 10 point head start in every single NCAA game he coaches, just for consistently being an oasis of clean in the slimy cesspool that is NCAA MBB.

A kind of lifetime cleanliness achievement award that he has earned the hard way, swimming against the tide.

No NCAA referee should ever be allowed to call a foul on a John Beilein player ever again.  Just because.

You are so right. Contrast his handling of the  Tuley-Tillman affair with how Hoke dealt with Gibbons.  And Michigan sure could use a big, heavily recruited LT right now.

That and the academic achievement of the football team this past year being the best in the conference. That trend improving means more than adding a couple wins to this year's 8.

MSU is an object lesson in what you can become when you lose sight of what higher education is supposed to be about.

Who were the 4 football players accused in the gang rape mentioned from 2007???, Seriously this was so covered up and they need to be exposed and handed punishment by an outside Justice System

The interview with the parents of the deceased rape victim was tough and compelling. As a dad to a daughter, I have to think there will be some loud voices coming forward. Is there a way at to have east lansing annexed back to Lansing? Kind of joking, but...

MSU to get out in front of this? Obviously, what is done is done, but if people are going to keep digging, and they most certainly are, wouldn’t those who remain be smart to hand over everything and try to get over this as soon as possible?

Turning over records is mandatory with the AG investigation. Fighting a battle over that is unthinkable at this point.

The only way I can see it is by making personnel moves. A new president and AD that publicly commit to reform and have some credibility. Forced resignations and firings without waiting for the AG's investigation to finish. It's very hard to see any way to do that and keep Dantanio and Izzo.

I am pretty sure it is too late for them to get in front of this, but if they wanted to get as close to the front as they will ever get (which is still pretty damn far), transparency would help. Things will still get much worse for them, but handing over what is wanted when it is wanted definitely won't hurt them more than they've already hurt themselves.

I don’t think many people at MSU or in the media fully understand the gravity of what Bill Scheutte has done in appointing a Special Prosecutor. That role doesn’t exist merely to file a report; they also have the ability to file criminal charges. When his office looked into the Flint water crisis, charges were filed and people - including state employees - went to jail. The same thing will happen here. That’s not even including what may yet happen if the Dept of Ed’s investigation is turned over to the DOJ, which is more likely now than ever. The Feds don’t file charges unless they’ve got you dead to rights. I suspect by their statements that Izzo understands the jam he’s in; but Dantonio really doesn’t get it yet. Both should have hired personal defense attorneys yesterday. They need the advice of counsel and to, for once in both of their miserable lives, STFU if they have any sense at all.

ESPN will have a long thread to pull and they know the pieces that will keep people shaking their heads. 1. Austin Robertson- the incidents against females in HS and Dantonio’s “vetting” before Austin was placed on scholarship will really raise questions about FB actually inserting a known predator on campus. 2. King/Vance/Corley - trial will raise the topic all over again and increase PR inquiries about Blackwell’s insertion into the process (when did Dantonio really know). I suspect Blackwell might be a good candidate for a deposition. 3. Dunnings mess - all of the sexual assaults swept away during his sordid tenure will get a fresh look for professional misconduct - such as the Payne/Appling case despite police recommending charges and corroborating statements by the players. 4. Missing Title IX submissions - ESPN certainly has insight that violent issues occurred without thorough Title IX processing. 5. Administration compliance - they haven’t really started to report on the individuals (like Asst Gen Counsel Moore) and folks will start to talk “off the record” as the heat turns up. 6. Media presence - post game pressers and every MSU game will raise this topic. March Madness will actually feel like everybody is leery about Izzo’s program. He hasn’t even begun to feel the relentless questions that will test his patience.

Sexual assault issues can happen involving athletes at any school including here it's how you handle it is the difference. It's also about the character of the people that you bring in, Dantonio has been known to bring in some rather questionable characters. He did not pull Jayru Campbell scholarship offer until after the third incident when the media basically blew the story up and in the Robertson case he slipped him in after signing day even though he had a sexual assault issue in high school. So as far as I see it he brought a sexual predator on to campus, that is on dantonio

Bringing in questionable characters is one thing. Giving kids second chances can be a great thing for the kid and for society. But someone like that should have a microscope on him. I agree that this culture is at the very least, exacerbated by Dantonio--and Izzo--AND Hollis...and even the f-ing gymnastics coach. It is insane; and won't be surprising to hear it happening (sans the Nassar stuff) at other institutions. This is a big deal for MSU.

I totally agree with second chances and I do believe that is for the betterment of society however if you had a daughter on a campus would you feel the same about a coach bringing in someone who has already been accused of sexual assault. My daughter is a college athlete and if this happened to her by a kid that I found was given a second chance I would want justice.

When she was being recruited she was told by many coaches watch what you do, watch what you put on social media, watch what friends you have on social media and what they post because it is seems to appear That's sports other than football and basketball character does seem to matter

Just finished watching this, and the nassar story on E60. I vividly remember that story from 2010, and it just was nothing...it went away. I remember the story of the woman and Appling and Payne--and then during the final 4, all the special interest focus was on how Payne befriended a young girl with cancer. A super warm-hearted story about him...and I kept thinking, "what about that rape story"...and it went nowhere. Well, thank goodness Carolyn Schaner is speaking up now. This is clearly a cultural issue at MSU. Hiding things, protecting athletes; all the while a culture is created where we don't want women speaking up. Izzo is complicit at the very least--and that is being kind, imo. The other thing I thought of watching this, is that you KNOW this is going on in other places. Suppression of assaults to protect high profile people, or the reputation of an institution. I hope like hell our institution has not created this culture, but I would bet more is going to come out at other institutions as well. People should be outraged--and if they are, it will empower the others from other institutions to speak up. And they should.

This makes me absolutely sick to my stomach. I don’t see how they don’t force both Dantonio and Izzo out after this. Wouldn’t the University force them to to try and save face? I know if I had a daughter I would never let her go to that school after watching that report. People need to go to jail and an example needs to be made by firing Dantonio and Izzo.

I DO have daughters, and initially I thought "this goes on everywhere" but now, seeing this--there is a full on culture there. Including trainers, investigators, Ingham county, coaches... No F-ing way I send my kids there.

There is Latin saying, "Fiat justitia ruat caelum", let justice be done though the heavens fall.

I feel bad enough watching football knowing about the physical toll exacts on the players for the rest of their lives, and how college athletics makes such a mockery of the 'student athlete'. I really don't need to also be perpetuaing an evil culture of allowing certain people to be above the law.

I am quite confidant we have nothing to fear with Beilein at the helm. Everything I've seen from Harbaugh suggests he's on the right track, tough with cases like Grant Perry's though I admit I did not follow that too closely. I thought he was over zealous with JBB at the time but now maybe not so.

I think what Izzo and Dantonio did was probably what they viewed and maybe was industry norm. But there is a sea change going on and with the Nassar microscope they need to go. I don't want to watch a Michigan / MSU game and have to have that subtext.

This is absolutley deplorable. I nearlyt hrew up when Travis Walton basically said if I punched her the injury would have been much worse.  If there was a video of this, Izzo would have had to fire him and MIGHT not be losing his job in the next few weeks.

There was a guy on the radio this AM named Jeff Lesson (who I've never heard of) who said he was a Spartan Grad and a criminal attorney that that there is zero chance these two don't get fired soon and/or prosectued.  He was sickened by all of it  There were still calllers who said that if there were no convictions then this may be made up and they should keep their jobs.  Delusional

This is not going away and Izzo and Mike will eventually go. Also to the poster regarding RCMB IQs being around 80...many people with mental challenges have have wonderful personalities. Please don't throw them in with that ilk in EL.
