Drevno apologizes to OL

Submitted by Bodogblog on

Per Brandon Justice, Drevno called his OL together and apolgized to them for his coaching last season.  I don’t know whether to commend him or poop in a bag and mail it to him.  Civlized me the former, but my id demands the latter.

Also says Harbaugh told a recruit he's a different person, but to me that's a secondary story.

Takes some guts to do this, and they are recognizing a need for change.

Guys, it's cool. Coach Harbaugh is a new person. That person? Mrs. Dawn Ortiz of Jupiter, FL. When people zig, Coach zags. She's got great recruiting connections down there, despite several DUIs. Hell, maybe because of them.

In (half-) seriousness, apologies and mea culpas, while a little unsettling to me in the "we've got this and are professionals" department, are at least a tacit acknowledgment that issues are being seriously addressed. Also, context matters a lot in an apology. When Mrs. Dawn Ortiz of Jupiter, FL went down for her first DUI, her apologies were heartfelt and well-received by the sentencing judge. Those apologies were harder to believe after her 6th conviction in just under a decade.

Either way, we're pulling for you, Dawn. GO BLUE!

Most of the responses to this post are ridiculous.  Drevno is not apologizing to us.  He is apologizing to a bunch of driven young men who are busting their ass to be the best that they can be.  Maybe, Drevno senses that the guys in the OL room are feeling the weight of the world given all the criticism out there and he is letting them know that he has their back in hopes of freeing them up and regaining some confidence.

I know I have always appreciated people who would take the heat versus point fingers.  In fact, those coaches and managers who had my back, always got that little bit extra that I didn't even know I could give.

I, like many here, have my concerns with the OL development.  So I am all for a guy stepping up and owning it, especially in front of his guys.

Proof is in the pudding, but many of you need to check the brakes a bit with regard to jumping on every little report out of the football building.

It doesn't mean he's going to do any better this year, and that's all that really matters.  Apologies don't put points on the board.  Get the line in shape, or GTFO and make room for someone who can.  There are lots of guys who'd love that job and could do it better than it's being down now.

I feel like most of you are reading this wrong if you see this as a negative thing.  And seriously, none of you pay Drevno (or any of the coaches for that matter) a dime.  So stop talking about how much money he makes.

A bunch of Michigan fans taking news and reading it through a lens of negativity?! Will wonders never cease! Seriously though. This is another example of the self loathing Michigan fans exhibit. If an article came out basically saying Drevno was reported to have refused to take responsibility for the past season’s lackluster performance, he’d be shit on. When he takes responsibility for last season’s lack luster performance, the sky is now falling, or he’s shit on for not doing it sooner. As I find myself asking in here too often, “which is it?”

This is not a positive story. it has negative recruiting written all over it. "Michigan coaches even admit that they do not properly prepare you." Sure, I'm glad that the coaches are evaluating themselves - because they always should - but this is going to have a negative impact on the perception of the coaching staff.

How about the planet where you believe this kind of stuff doesn't get traction on the recruiting trail? By the way, how have those vows of "preparing kids for the pros" and a "Michigan education" been doing for our OL recruiting since Drevno took over?

My point is that there will always be negative recruiting against us and I’m sure you must’ve missed both of them because we get negative feedback because we don’t just play school! But I️ digress. You got I️t! Schools used negative recruitment tactics against Michigan! Well Golly!!!

I don’t understand the hate for this. I’m glad to see that we have a coaching staff that can vocalize their frustrations, admit they’ve had a bad season, and be active upon righting the ship for next season. Would you like to see our coaches be all “Aw, shucks. Well, we tried” about this season? I for one certainly wouldn’t! That type of response is one of the many reasons Brady Hoke is no longer at Michigan. This applogy seems like it is Drevno making it clear that they’ve recognized that they need to do a better job and that 2017 was unacceptable. No more bullshit, no more excuses. I’d like to emphasize that I still want change though. Either Pep or Drev have to go. No one, not even the players understood the playcalling system, but I hope Harbaugh does and can understnad who to get rid of due to some incompetent game management decisions. As for Harbaugh, I really hope that this “new” Harbaugh is actually 2015/2016 Harbaugh. Calls are going against us, it doesn’t matter if he’s a madman or not, so he should still fire up his players at this point, and just stay within the boundaries of the rulebook. All I know is, I don’t want to see the silent and boring 2017 Harbaugh again.

that it's a bad look and yet sometimes actually the right thing to do.

But if you think about it long enough to arrive at the conclusion that you should apologize in spite of the fact that it risks undermining your authority and status with the group you're meant to command...then your mistakes were probably severe enough to justify a resignation.

Now that being said..it's been written that Robert E. Lee apologized after Gettysburg, and yet many of his men went to their graves with a sense of admiration and fierce loyalty to him thereafter..so maybe it all depends.

The problem is that you need ONE OC and assistant coaches to help him. Drevno is a good coach but he and 3 other coaches are calling the plays!!! That’s the offensive problem and Harbaughs fault. Pep and Drevno are not leaving Michigan fans and now Enos will be replacing Frey as a play caller. HUGE problem. If Patterson is ruled ineligible next year and Peters is the QB then your looking at another 8-5 season on top of no coaching changes.

John was born on, what, Jan 11 last year at 4 lbs 13 ozs -- that's a low birth weight and the little guy spent some time in the NICU.

I'm gonna bet that there was some re-ordering in staff responsbilities as a result and it didn't all get sorted out well.  Drev stepped up to more OC, o-line coaching broken into a coupla pieces, one of which was zone vs power.  It never felt like Pep was part of the family -- never heard him discussed by staff, credited with anything amazing.

Jim hasn't made any excuses, but all the staff changes last year, a new preemie in the family and who knows what else -- I can see things getting disordered, especially with the way that Jim is the heart and head of the program.

Part of that enthusiasm unknown to mankind was directed a bit elsewhere, I've been thinking.

Or maybe I'm just sentimental and full of crap.

Hey coaches it’s time to get your heads out of your asses and earn those fat-ass paychecks! Quit apologizing and put your big boy pants on. You coaches are getting lapped by everybody else!

like Coach Drevno is staying, I don't have any idea what else the statement or the apology means.  Next year will be very interesting and important for the progam, though I guess we could say that about every year.  Thanks for posting these tidbits.

Demonstrates the coaches are taking accountability. They preach accountability to the players, should be able to hold themselves to the same standard. The staff is very capable, and this will be the sobering moment for them.

Good for him to own up to it, but apologizing is one thing: buckling down and actually improving things is something else entirely. The entire offense was an embarassment this year. No way to mince words. An embarassment. It's insane when teams like Cincinatti, Air Force and Purdue, teams you should be able to flat out out-talent, are just manhandling you up front.

So I'm happy you apologized, but what are you going to do to make things better? Because if we have to watch ND hold our running backs to a combined 60 yards on 35 carries next season, as we've been accustomed to seeing against decent teams, you might as well just clear your desk out now.
