Drevno apologizes to OL

Submitted by Bodogblog on

Per Brandon Justice, Drevno called his OL together and apolgized to them for his coaching last season.  I don’t know whether to commend him or poop in a bag and mail it to him.  Civlized me the former, but my id demands the latter.

Also says Harbaugh told a recruit he's a different person, but to me that's a secondary story.

Takes some guts to do this, and they are recognizing a need for change.

Harbaugh has to realize this is crunch time and he should be on the hot seat. OSU PSU and MSU are all ahead of Michigan right now and he has to prove that last year wasn’t a one time thing. Recruiting is gonna start declining and the fans will no longer by in if he can’t win next season. Pull out all the tricks and work you ass off this off season because if we do not beat OSU and make it to Indy he gone. I have faith he will get the job done. GO BLUE!

Most of your points are valid, right up until the part of if he doesn't get to Indy he needs to be gone.  People here love Harbaugh too much to fire him after year four.

Harbaugh does need to get this thing going the right way because the past two seasons have been disappointments.  I still 100% want him as our coach but I think he needs to adapt to the college game a bit more.  Seems a bit to set in the NFL way.  Michigan is not lining up against 11 elite defenders play after play, so leave the crazy complex NFL stuff to the NFL.  Get athletes in space and let them do their thing.  Stangley I think he knows this and will be adapting.  Coaching is getting more streamlined, less cooks in the kitchen, and all that jazz.

Heres to hoping things are ready to go this Fall.

He's a professional and gets paid a decent amount of money.  If he doesn't think he earned it or isn't good enough, resign.  Often, when people apologize like this, it's so that others will say "no, it wasn't your fault."  Not trying to be harsh if he's being sincere, but after the fact apologies don't solve anything, other than maybe your own ego.

Of course my hope is he knows tangibly how he can be better and we'll see that next year?

I'm surprised an apology could be viewed so negatively.  If someone apologizes, they should have to just quit?

If you're leading a group of people that fails, apologizing is a way of taking accountability and is something that takes a lot of guts to do, rather than pointing the finger at the team.  It's not uncommon at all either.  Coaches apologize to their team for their game plan or take some form of a "mea culpa" in the press conference all the time.  In my opinion it's what good leaders do.

Making an apology that will inevitably be made public screams desperation-level type shit. I doubt JH gives him another chance after Drevno made it known he fucked up. Honestly we don't even need a great O line or play calling. With our defense in tow, a competent to good offense will work just fine.

What took him so long to recognize that the Oline was not functioning and he needed to fix it.  Why didn't Harbaugh get this addressed in October?  In business for profit organizations, he would be demoted or sent packing.  Really, really poor managment all the up up to and including JH.

hence the switch from zone to power and Drevno moving down to sidelines from the coaches box. Now that Frey is gone let's see what happens with the line this year.

If we see more of the awfulness that we saw this past season then I have confidence JH will make the necessary changes.

This is really starting to ger a Brady Hoke/UCLA under Jim Mora starting to go off the rails feeling.

This year was disappointing, but I'm starting to sesne a real loss of confidence right now and I don;t know that anything good is going to come of that.

A) If he did do this, I don't think it's helpful it go out.

B) Feeling the need to do this is a bad sign.

I want to dismiss this, but this feels...bad.

I disagree.  The first step is realizing there is a problem and something needs to change.  Dreveno has done that. He could have just as easily said, this year was an abberation, I know what I'm doing and things will work out if I just keep doing it.  Lots of people in positons of power/authority are afraid of admitting the mistake because it hurts their ego and its just easier to not self-evaluate.  I think this is a positive step.

I agree 100% and feel that all the “tough guys” in here shitting on this, asking for salary back, and acting like this is a sign of weakness are off base. Admitting, to the people who matter, that you’ve made a mistake in judgement or that a plan isn’t working is what great leader do when faced with adversity. They don’t allow their ego to control their actions, and they move on constructively rather than dogmatically.

Seeing this more as lacking self-confidence over weakness, Don't give two shits about the salary and agree self-reflection and a willingness to own up to mistakes is important. Still think this feels as if something is going wrong and the coaches aren't quite sure what it is. This apology getting out into the wide world is not a good thing and is a sign that not all is right in Mudville. Self-reflection is good, talking about how to fix the issues is good, owning up to mistakes is good, abject apologies smack of desperation and we've seen this movie play out before. I hope I'm wrong and it may be I am reading the tea leaves wrong here, but this scares me a little.

I’m with you on this. I can see a coach apologizing for a play call or a specific game plan, not for a whole season. He’s basically admitting he cheated a whole senior class. That is a killer on the recruiting trail and will cause the team to lose some confidence in him permanently. The only real exception to this would be apologizing the Frey hire didn’t work out the first half of the season, to acknowledge the mid season scheme change made a difference and that’s what they are committed to going forward.

Or failure explodes into a giant mess of suck if you don't diagnose the issue correctly. Right now I'm not getting a ton of confidence they have their finger on what went wrong. Still early days and there's plenty of time still but the '18 season has the twin disadvantages not of being tough AND critical and this isn't a great spot to be in.

Honestly what's done is done.  I guess it's good that they realize the obvious, but that's meaningless without positive, impactful response.  Change for change's sake can backfire, but standing pat will look bad until evidence is shown to the contrary, especially when the coaches who had the best historical reputation are gone.

Refreshing to see a leader falling on his sword.

Don't know if it's sincere or if it will lead to improvement. But it's refreshing. Good for Drevno for making the gesture.

Our offense and QB play have been way too shitty and it goes all the way Up. So sick of waiting for all of our teams in Michigan Sports to get it together, I don't even want to think Tigers right now.

are the critics who complained about the Oline coaching and how it related to everything else on the offense that went wrong. If it doesn't, it provides a ready excuse for not accepting any other outside criticism as valid.

When you're not facing firing, this road is easier to travel for any coach.

I hope this is untrue. If a football coach being paid millions of dollars is in a position where he’s done such a poor job he feels obligated to apologize to his players, he probably should be fired. If he’s really a changed man it’s probably best he makes his comeback elsewhere

I hate this in general, but would be ok if the end result is that he is now the full time oline coach and not the OC. He has a track record of building good lines and hopefully he gets back to doing just that. Give the new guy the reigns as OC with JH and start whipping ass again. Please?

If something was not right last year, then I am sure am glad they are working to fix it.  I wouldn't focus on the 'apology' as much as I would look at the big picture.  The coaching staff will work hard and they always aim to get better.  That is a good message to recruits.

Mistakes are part of the learning process and if we want to gain ground and wins over rivals, they can't be content with last year.  Men at work in coming months ahead.  Go Blue!

Agree.  And if Drevno felt he needed to apologize for something, then the players probably thought so too, and it was therefore much appreciated by them.  Lot of people putting such a negative twist on this.  No one here knows all of what was saidi n that meeting, or what precisely (or generally?) he apologized for.  May have been a real constructive heart to heart with his players.  It's likely some collective resolve came from it.

Personally, I think a Mia Culpa like this take a lot of guts, and a very keen sense self analysis. I get that lots of Michigan fans are going to see this a negative (what don’t you see as negative?), but it’s clear (if this is all true) that the coaching staff is taking a very critical look at its performance last season and isn’t pleased. That, IMO, is a sign of a great leader, not (as many of you seem to think) a weak one, or one about whom we should be worried.

So we've gone from Harbaugh saying "Next year we go for the big one!" after the 2015 season to the staff apologizing to their players for poor coaching in 2018 and the head guy telling recruits that he's a different person. I has sad.
