Quinn immediately responded that no players would have a say in the coaching hire. Not worried that JBC will stick if Patricia doesn't want him.

This is by far the most Lions thing that the organization could do. What about the offense the last few years made anyone go, "yeah, let's keep that around"? Hell, they finished LAST in team rushing this year, averaging just 76 rushing yards per game. That's insane to me.
January 14th, 2018 at 10:30 AM ^
The most Lions thing would probably first be losing a draft pick for tampering with a coach while the season is still going.
Quinn seems smarter than that though... I hope.

Obviously we can interview, but teams can not hire or AGREE to HIRE.
I mentioned tampering, mostly joking, but also OP topic kind of suggests.

"If they prefer Shurmur, Patricia or Wilks, they're not allowed to execute a contract or agree to execute a contract until that coach's season is done, per the NFL's tampering policy."

Schefter worded it carefully when the news broke on Sportscenter yesterday. Something along the lines of "there is enough trust and understanding between the Lions, Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia that after the Patriots season is over he will likely be named the head coach."
Nothing official, no terms, no agreement.

I am a Cleveland Browns fan, yes we do exist, another year with Hue Jackson!
Uggh!

I don't see anything new here. It's been likely.
Patriots’ defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is likely to become the Detroit Lions’ next head coach, league sources told ESPN. More on Sunday NFL Countdown.

I thought those reports were downplayed pretty quickly. I definitely heard about the reports, but didn't give them a lot of weight.
EDIT: I see what you are saying now PKatz Mbee. You thought he was coming then the Giant story and now a reversal to coming to Lions again. I guess I never gave much cred to the Giant story is why I felt...'nothing new'.
January 14th, 2018 at 10:19 AM ^
I don't know what is true or not, but those reports could have been put out by Patricia's people to help negotiate a better contract...or they were right and the Giants moved in another direction. Who knows?

Having a GM/Coach combo that other teams in the NFL would actually want to have.
January 14th, 2018 at 10:54 AM ^
Quinn seems decent as GM but Patricia is a complete unknown as head coach.

Who they hire...the Good Lord himself couldn't fix that team.
The reality is that they have average talent. There are so many holes to fill....OL, RB, DL, LB. Until they start honestly evaluating their talent they will be doomed to fail.
Their only saving grace is that the NFL business model screams "parity". Any team that wins nine games thinks they are close. The ftanchises that year out are SUper Bowl contenders (NE, Pitt, GB etc.) think that unless they win the Super Bowl it's a bad year.....the Lions think it's a good year if they contend for the playoffs.
Guess they sign up to the adage "set your goals low and you'll always acheive them"
January 14th, 2018 at 10:32 AM ^
Obviously they don't at all. It seems clear that Lion fans are the ones stuck in the past, not Lions management.
January 14th, 2018 at 12:03 PM ^
Care to explain how they're not "honestly evaluating thier talent"? 'Cuz I'd like to know this...

Wore a Goodell Clown shirt while stepping off the plane after winning the Super Bowl. He has a reputation for being an insane hard worker and is obsessed with details, so much so that Butler credited Patricia for his Super Bowl saving interception. Patricia has coached offense and defense while he worked his way up and through the Pats organization. I think he is a good fit for Detroit especially with his relationship with our GM. The only real arguments against are that he's never been a head coach, very few Pats coordinators go on to success as head coaches, and, it's the Lions, it doesn't matter who they hire, they will always be terrible. I'm more excited about this hire than I have been for any of the Lions last 3 coaches, Caldwell, Schwartz, Marinelli. I mean, they were able to get a coach that other teams actually wanted to hire. That hasn't happened in easily over a decade.
January 14th, 2018 at 10:54 AM ^
Admittedly, I am feeling the same way about this - I am more intrigued by this hire than I was about the last few. Despite the knocks on experience as an HC and the Belichick coaching tree, everything else I've heard about Patricia makes me think that this might be a net plus if he can put a decent staff around him.

is that dome teams have a terrible record playing on the road outside in the playoffs.
Dome teams are soft any time they have to play outside late in the season.
January 14th, 2018 at 12:14 PM ^
Any playoff team playing on the road is going to have a bad record. 8 teams play indoors, if, for some reason, the Falcons or Vikings job came open after this year, I'd bet they will be very sought after jobs. Candidates woudn't be turning those down just because they play indoors. Haha, thinking the "biggest reason" Patricia wouldn't take the Lions job because they play indoors is just so insane haha.
