Let's be at least as optimistic as Joel Klatt (Michigan in Top 3 for next year)

Submitted by JHumich on

For whatever reason, talk like this often gets smacked down as overly optimistic homerism that is guilty of participating in a perpetual "wait-til-next-year" mantra that will never ever ever come true.

But, as a Michigan fan, for me hope springs eternal--especially with the instant, palpable culture change since Harbaugh arrived.

Can't we be at least as optimistic for our own team as Joel Klatt is for them?

I'm hoping that accolades like this stack up. I think Coach has our men in a place where they are going to hit the work hard, and strive to improve every day, regardless of what people are saying.

More than ever, it's great to be a Michigan Wolverine [fan]!

Forde also had Michigan in the playoff next year, after the Patterson news broke.  He correctly recognized that a good QB was the only thing holding M back this year.

Or Hamilton are still running the offense then no. If we upgrade the OC after the bowl game then maybe. We need someone that can adjust the offense to the type of players we have year to year and not die by the system. Our current staff can’t do that

What do you mean by adjust to the players they have? Given that they consistently got players open against OSU, seems like they did pretty well, scheme-wise. There is no scheme that can win against a good defense without a functional QB and receivers who can come down with the ball. All they can do is get guys open for reasonably easy throws, which they did. Seems like a success to me. Also, I know the consensus is to blame the QB play last year, but seriously think and try to remember the last time a UM receiver bailed out the QB by making a tough catch the way other teams’ receivers consistently do against UM? Hemingway is the last I can remember. Darboh’s drop against Iowa last year is a great example of that. He catches that ball, game over, Michigan wins. It was certainly a tough catch to make, but teams that make the championship have receivers that make those catches. The hope is that last year’s class of receivers will start to make those catches.

That's a very optimistic outlook, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happened. Michigan was just decent QB play away from at least 10-2. It's certainly possible for our dudes to have a hell of a season next year if the team can stay relatively healthy.

to be perfectly honest..Until they defeat OSU and consistently beat MSU nothing has really changed.

I feel sorry for a whole generation of Michigan fans who dont really know what it feels like to beat OSU more than Once in 15 years..I remember a day when we were 50-50 and that was followed by a 10-2-1 era and we ALWAYS crushed MSU...

So forgive me If I say Ive heard it all before but  I have...sorry

Top-three is probably too high, but there is no reason the team can't be top-ten in preseason. We're losing barely any starters. All the guys Harbaugh recruited are coming of age. This team should be great next season. The problem is the schedule is beyond brutal with all three rivals on the road.

few guys/groups in the offseason. Can the QBs and WRs get on the same page? Can the OL develop the strength to move folks? Can a couple of DTs take the next step in S&C to partially replace Mo? Get those 3 answers in the affirmative and the 2018 just needs a little good luck to make the playoff (never underestimate luck).

We are talking about next season.  Of course there are going to be ifs and shoulds, etc.  What do you want people to say, "man, M is so good they will go undefeated no matter what happens."

If you really want to go back 15 years, then we are going all the way back to an era when M was winning Big Ten titles and appearing in Rose Bowls on the regular.  It was reasonable for people to have national title contention hopes back then, just like it was again in 2016 and should be in 2018 and thereafter.

The era you probably really meant to refer to was Michigan's troubled period between about 2008 and 2014.  That certainly was a long seven years or so.  It wasn't 15 freaking years.

Furthermore, the kinds of ifs and shoulds we are concerned about for 2018 are pretty tractable issues.  Will any of the 4- and 5-star QBs that Harbaugh recruited take the next step to stardom?  Can we find a couple competent OTs from among 6+ viable candidates on the roster? Will a quality third tailback emerge to replace Isaac?  This is a far cry from the questions we were asking around 2010, like "wiil we have any semblace of a defense," or in 2014, like "what about Bob Stitt?"

Does he mean Top 3 in the Big 10 east? How do these early rankings even work? Are they trying to guess the ratings at the end of the season, or how talented they think they are at the jump? There is no way in the world the Big 10 east will get 3 teams in the top ten by the end of the year.

Also, just thinking about that last sentance without PSU even listed just shows how imbalanced the divisions are.

He has msu top 10 so I know it's a crap list. They did way better than expectations this year, but it'd be truly amazing if they actually took the next step up.

Better team, but harder schedule likely leads to 9-3 or maybe 10-2. @ND @MSU @OSU Wisconsin and Penn State at home. No way we do better than 3-2 through those games.

I’m pretty optimistic about next year. We return a lot of starters on both sides of the ball and that is especially positive for the defense. OL and QB need to improve a lot but returning experience is always good. Should have improved QB play with either Peters or Patterson as the starter. Beating rivals on the road is never easy but I’m very excited about the team next year.

I like to think I'm pretty optimistic, compared to a lot of the doom-and-gloom people on this board. But I also try to temper my expectations a little, so I'm happier if they exceed them.

Klatt is a big time Harbaugh believer. He had us in the playoffs in 2016 and said we are absoulutely a top 10 team this year. He's been on the bandwagon since we won 10 games in 2015.
