META: Since the culling . . .

Submitted by Larry Appleton on

Since the culling that took place shortly after the OSU game, this board has been immensely more pleasant and fun to be a part of.  Getting rid of all the UNACCEPTABLES was a brilliant move!  It's so refreshing to know that I can come here and actually (gasp) have a good time talking about my favorite football program!  What a wonderful change!

So, I just want to say THREE CHEERS TO THE BLESSED MODS!

Who was culled? Banned? Sent to Bolivia? And I'm assuming there is a difference. If you go to visit Bolivia, you can still comment, but not start threads. If you get the banhammer, you are gone for good. Or at least a good while.

I haven't seen Maizen for a bit. I'm curious is the proprietors actually check on new users, to screen out those who are trying to get in after they've been banned.

I'm also curious if any mods have ever been demoted.

I had kinda assumed that after people vented with the OSU loss, there was just naturally less negativity and snark.

The thing that seems to have changed the most has been the move to using phone apps as a platform, and also twitter. I think that leads to tons of extremely short and non-informational posts. When there is a thread that is basically comprised a couple words, maybe a couple lines, and it is just made up of putdowns and snark, it gets tiresome to scroll through.

The thing about filtering by IP is that you can sign up in some many different ways (and people's IP addresses can change pretty frequently) that if someone wants to create an account to troll, it's hard to stop them.  And in particular, the sad, bitter people who keep making said accounts are going to find ways to do so.

Freeze Tag: What about setting a negative minimum point total on either an account, or per post, or per thread you started...Many troll accounts would be toast out of the gate. Slip up, get too many negs on your account, or on a single post (say, -40ish trips the wire, as an example) and your account can live, but you can't post until a mod unfreezes you. Same concept could easily be applied w/ full account totals- get too many negs and you're frozen until someone with authority to unfreeze you does so. Basically, we're all good enough to spot the fakes that they'd be effectively banned by user 'curation'. And if the point total is enough, it prevents trolls from gaming the system to get a user artificially frozen because no one is going to manage 40ish accounts just to take down single users. Seems like this kind of process would naturally sift the likely b.s. right to the top, making the mods jobs a lot easier- they don't have to find a needle in the haystack- instead, the haystack finds the suspected needles for you to examine, validate, and then obliterate. Also, new users w/ genuine intent would be more mindful of whatever they have the impulse to post- nobody wants to whoopsy into being banned because their post was no more valuable than that of the trolls... Kind of feel like this might be the airtight solution to all our troll problems...no?

I can't say I was happy with the osu loss, but there sure were a lot of positives to take from that game. I thought for sure the game would not even be competitive, so that in itself was a pleasant surprise. I thought the team may not show up because of the QB situation. They not only showed up, but had a chance to win in the end. Of course, because of the afore mentioned problem it did not work out in the Wolverines favor.

Of course there is the wait til next year thing, but really next year things will look much different. I think you will see a lot more one sided victories, where we play two and maybe three QB's. The o-line will look a lot more cohesive and dominant and because of actually havinf a QB who can throw the ball, it will open up the run game even more. I see Higdon and Evans both going over one thousand yards or getting really close. Evans will probably get more passes thrown his way. I thought we would be moving forward with Peters at the helm, but will see with Patterson in the mix. I personally think adding Patterson gives Michigan the Best QB in the big ten. Just let that sink in for a minute, going from having the worst QB to the best in the big ten.

With the defense Michigan is going to field next year, and having at least good QB play, the sky is the limit for this team. We will see what happens in the bowl game, but I expect Michigan to roll big in this one. Do not be surprised that when the college rankings come out that Michigan is a top four team and favored to win the big ten.

Yeahhhhhhh, but Get back to me when there has actually been something worth complaining about that has happened in the Michigan Athletics universe. The OSU basketball game doesn't really reach the level of passion a football game does.

Actually there's a key difference. I think I actually smiled / semi-chuckled with those waaassuuupp commercials. At least the first 50 times. Then two weeks later they became very annoying. These new ones though? Man. I know I'm old and all, but they just aren't even remotely funny. And it is so painfully obvious that someone in corporate is trying to push this catch phrase into existence. I'm guessing they skipped their focus groups. Or maybe they just need to fire their version of Lochdogg.

good riddance to them all. Still a few stragglers out there though that will hopefully feel the wrath of Brian and his mighty mgoblog minions as they unleash upon them a swift, but fair judgment and eventual banning from this beloved board of ours. Cheers to noble moderators. Like so many public service workers, your work too often goes unnoticed and unappreciated until things get out of hand.

Sure seems to me like there's been a huge surge in very active new users - AKA people who were banned previously or simply like trolling the board with multiple user names.  It's so freaking easy to pick them out: Franklin our faux hip, street guy commenting multiple times in EVERY thread and then creating tons of new ones or the guy with 200 points starting a thread complaining that a 100 point threshold for creating threads is too low are two that readily come to mind.

And every one of them, when outed, had really been reading the board for many, many years and just now decided to start posting....a LOT....for some reason which I think is complete bullshit.  I still remember my first year here (I was a loyal Maize n Brew reader first) and I was scared to death to type anything cause everybody seemed to know everybody and there was entire insider language and protocol that took me a long time to figure out.

I know it's a ton of work to research IP addressess (and even that isnt foolproof) but man this proliferation of fake names & banned users coming back as somebody else is as bad as I've ever seen for some reason.
