META: Since the culling . . .

Submitted by Larry Appleton on

Since the culling that took place shortly after the OSU game, this board has been immensely more pleasant and fun to be a part of.  Getting rid of all the UNACCEPTABLES was a brilliant move!  It's so refreshing to know that I can come here and actually (gasp) have a good time talking about my favorite football program!  What a wonderful change!

So, I just want to say THREE CHEERS TO THE BLESSED MODS!

I have no doubt that Julian resurrected himself from the grave, but I don't see much wrong with anything he's posted in his new life.  I'm sure it'll come at some point, but you can't police things based on anticipated future transgressions.  The mods have a tough job - they know several new posters are going to show an ugly side, they just don't know when or where - they aren't precogs.

Or are they?

I agree with you. Once you started to see the backlash against suspected troll accounts and the creation of board topics about individual members is when the uptick of unauthentic accounts began. You ignore these guys and they go away. But by all means, let's keep focusing on franklin Hatchett because he talked kinder' funny

It wasnt long ago that this place intimidated me with an aura of intellect and an extreme harshness to anyone that simply made a spelling error. Back then I was a lurker, and I enjoyed the unique culture that the board provided. It seemed that only the most "hardcore" fans had an account here, especially during the dark ages of Rich Rod and Hoke. But with Harbaugh it's fun to be a Michigan fan again, and the enthusiasm (unknown to mankind) has brought a lot more people here it seems, including a ton of undesirables. The board is so different now that if it wasn't for the old vets I wouldn't bother commenting anymore. You guys that have been here for years are what makes this place great.

How many football blogs have someone doing takes on Dante? (formerlyanonymous)  Or Hunter Thompson? (jhackney)  Remember Waters Demos and his philosophical dives?  Blue Seoul and his With Pics! stuff?  The front page writing is, in my opinion, better than when I first lurked, Bronxblue rocks it (along with a few others), but you're right that the vibe is somewhat different from what it was.

Maybe it's just me, but I would prefer to keep the posters that have been around a long time and actually contribute to things (e.g. Maizen, Yost, etc.) Yes, they have their inflammatory ass moments (I hear they have a cream for this now), but balance it with useful commentary. Outright trolls with no positive posting history should have their browsers immediately directed to RCMB or 11W upon login (this should not be difficult to arrange).

Maizen had some valid posts and engaged in active dialogue.  His downfall was the numerous posters here bringing him up in every thread. If you ever responded to Maizen's posts, he would respond back, engaging in active dialogue.

I'm sure a good amount of posters agreed with some of his posts, unfortunately, they are not the vocal ones.

No, Maizen was trolling.  He posted good info at times, but his business was trolling.

Alum96 came on the board a while back, talking about how Michigan's football team wasn't cutting it.  He presented a ton of data, made great arguments.  I hated him at first - this is back when a lot of people were still giving Hoke a long leash - but he persisted and you had to respect his posts.  That's a pretty big bar to reach, but that's how you do it.

When you post threads claiming M coaches were being out-worked for in state kids, without recognizing the ridiculously great job they did in-state in the prior two classes, while focusing on kids who have not even signed LOI's yet (or were just crystal-ball'd and not even committed), you know you have a troll.  Likewise piling on after negative events.

I actually miss both of those guys. I argued with Yost a few times, but nothing major. I thought he had some good posts and some that just were out there, but he gave commentary and really seemed to care about Michigan football. Same for Maizen. They both seemed passionate, but maybe they took things to far. I am kind of desensitized to that so I kind of just got a kick out of the trantrums. I guess I just laughed and moved on.

I like the angry and beligerent guys. The posters I can stand are the trolls with there silly comments that have zero to do with Michigan football. The guys who have to write dilly dilly fifteen times or other silly and immature crap that makes zero sense to me. If your passinate about Michigan football than your cool with me. I guess they went outside of the limits. I don't know. I rarely down vote anyone. I just skip to the next comment and so on.

I think there will always be troll accounts. I suspect "Big Deezy" already. The best strategy is just to ignore them and focus on trusted contributors.

Well we'll all be dead and completely forgotten in about 100 years and most definitely in 200 years.  Name anyone from 200 years ago,   You can't.  Life is doesn't matter. We're all a meaningless blip.  Worse than that, no one will love you in 2 generations.  Do you love your great grandma?  Love barely extends to people we don't know much less a few generations away.

It always blows my mind just a little to remember that 0 AD and 250 AD both seem pretty much equally ancient to us, but 250 years ago the Revolutionary War hadn't even begun yet and that is a long fucking time ago.

"Campus Martius" (as in the ancient district of Rome) means "Field of Mars", but the Campus Martius was as much a field to Julius Caesar as Queen Elizabeth I is now queen of England.  Time is weird.

Not that surprising if you think about it. The greatest demarcation between segments of human history are the various technological and social advancements through the years (e.g. Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Renaissance, Englightenment, Space, Digital/Information just to name a few). Two hundred years of separation now covers a much greater span of advancement as compared to the Roman times (which was still changing much faster than say the Old Kingdom Egyptian period, even though each of these three points in history are separated by ~2000 years).

The culling was nice...  While I do like the different opinions and back & forth of conversations, there is a big difference between differing thoughts about how/what to do versus outright whining and complaining based on nothing more than UNACCEPTABLE feelings.

As more of a lurker, I can say that I am far more comfortable with the idea of posting in the future now that the toxicity of the comments has decreased. I've wanted to contribute (positively) for a while, but held off even creating an account, or commenting once I did, because of the, "unacceptable," crowd constantly whining this past season.

I'm with you there. **Edited to say I just really want a better mobile experience. I loved the MGoBlog HD app and while I understand its shutdown the existing app leaves a lot to be desired. I thought I remembered something about a redesigned app coming as well which would be awesome, but at the very least a mobile-responsibe site would be a huge step forward. Of course, I'm a 12-year addict (woo Haloscan!) so I'm going to consume like one either way. The upgrades would be nice, though.
