OT: Don't let the Tenn fiasco distract you from ASU hiring Herm Edwards

Submitted by Occam's Razor on

Holy shit. This press conference was uhh...interesting?

Chances are he doesn't know what ASU's mascot is either.

This is the craziest part of this whole fiasco. They hired an ESPN talking head that didn’t even care (or preferred) that he didn’t get to bring on his own guys. They just switched from a college coach to an old and out of touch failed NFL coach. Everything else is the exact same. Like, how can they possibly expect better results? What decent coach in their right mind would take the position and have to keep the entire staff from the previous regime?

That might have actually been the issue. If you keep doing something but you suck at it, then it doesn't matter where you do it, you will still suck. Sounds like Herm is tackling this position with a lot of enthusiasm, (not necessarily unknown to mankind) and a fresh perspective. I have never like the Jets, but Herm is Ok in my book. Just a genuine passionate guy.

But this just seems like a bad idea for both parties. I don’t see the upside in hiring a guy so stale. What because kids watched him on ESPN they will wanna go to ASU to play for him? That dog don’t hunt.

1. 63 years old

2. No connections to Arizona State, the state of Arizona. SJSU grad when ASU last won Rose Bowl (1987, Reagan administration). Recruiting?

3. Passionate guy, but way past his prime in terms of coaching football.

4. 54-74 lifetime coaching record, 2-4 record in post-season play demonstrates #3.

5. He has never won a championship, except a butt-hair NFL AFC East division title via 9-7 record in 2002...for the NY ReJets.

6. Last coaching attempt at KC Chiefs in NFL ended with him being FIRED after 3 seasons. He went 9-7, 4-12 and 2-14. He had one year left on his 4 year, $12M contract.

As it is, Arizona State football has never had consistent success at football.

There have only been two coaches to win 10 games there in back-to-back seasons:

Frank Kush and Todd Graham.

Graham was 46-31 in 6 years with only one losing season.

For Arizona State football over the course of Bruce Synder, Dirk Koetter, Dennis Erickson and Graham, 7-5 is pretty much par.

ASU has a lot more talent than most of you realize. I imagine people around the program feel that they have underperformed with the talent that they have. Their defense specifically has some damn good players on the DL and some good LB's too. I don't understand all the hate going towards Herm to be honest. I know it's a weird hire and sometimes he seems a little over the top but if you listen to what he is saying and what they are trying to do it might actually work out. Although I do kinda worry about the delegating of everything. I mean if you don't know your coaching staff how do you even begin to delegate anything because you don't know what you have.

no one is saying ASU doesn't have talent. They do.

They have significant talent in AZ and CA to tap into for recruiting as well.

Todd Graham is douche, but he did well enough at recruiting talent, scheme and RPS to win games for ASU consistently.  That's a tall order.  ASU is a long-term coaching project for anyone.  They have had talented coaches there that still could only muster 6-6 and 7-5 results with an odd 9 or 10 win season mixed in.

Herm Edwards has NEVER coached at the college level. He has coached some H.S. all-star games. That's pretty much it. That is a red flag.

He has zero connections with ASU except for contacts who used to be agents and business associates.  Another red flag.

Since getting fired in 2008 he has been working behind a desk and camera at ESPN, Monday morning quarterbacking NFL's crap, deteriorating product.  ESPN has been culling staff, including anchors.  The writing was on the wall for the man. Major red flag.

I'm sure he'll deliver some great pre-game, hafltime and post-game speeches to the team.  But he's not going to win any championships at ASU.

ASU never should have fired Graham.

6-3 in conference, 7-5 overall, finished 2nd in PAC-12 South behind conerence champion USC.  Should have hung on to Graham (53) for 4 more years, extended him or fired him and then seek a younger, proven, up-and-coming coach or hired from within.

Herm Edwards is just a horrible choice all around.

The good news is that ASU returns 10 starters on offense except star TB Kalen Balladge and should have 7 returning starters on defense next fall.

ASU schedule looks pretty brutal with games vs Michigan State, at Washington, at USC, at Oregon and at Arizona.

Anderson has a great relationship with the president of the university. From what I’ve read and heard on Sun Devil podcasts this idea and deal/hire is something they were hoping for. So much so that Anderson(AD) and Crow(Pres) we’re openly disappointed when we beat Wash this year because they wanted the firing to be easy. Graham was a dead man walking.

Having worked at several Fortune 500 corporations and at several Federal Government Agencies, I can tell you when somebody gets to a certain level of power they get very insulated from reality.

Everyone says yes to them all the time, and tells them how smart and unique-thinking they are.

There is nobody influential to stand next to them and whisper in their ear:

"That's the stupidest fucking thing I've ever heard."

This sums up the disaster presser.

On TV.  Who knows how this will turn out.  A lot of Power 5 programs updside down right now.  Yes, we didn't have a great season, but I like where we are going forward.

I only worry about the big ten east. I don't really care for Dantonio, Meyer or Franklin. Can anyone stomach those guys. I mean if you had to hang out with one a whole weekend who would you chose?. You can't assault them either.

I could hang out with Herm, but he would have to cut back on the cup checks. Just hope ASU hands Dantonio another loss next year. They are not as good as they think they are.

HELLO you play to win the game. Now that is priceless. If Herm had a prime as far as coaching goes he is way past it. HELLO.
