OT-ish: Reports that Tennessee has fired their AD.

Submitted by Sione's Flow on
Just saw a notification that John Currie has been fired after 8 months on the job. Now in addition to a HC they're also on the hunt for a new AD. I hear Dave Brandon might be available!

This whole thing is like the Michigan post Lloyd Carr search -- including in-fighting and an appearance by Schiano -- ramped up to like 100.  Like, Tennessee is internally sabotaging their AD and Phillip Fulmer is sabotaging the search and Currie himself because he wants to be AD.  Its amazing.

I am amazed he has been able to land not one but two power 5 AD jobs.

The Peter Principle in action.

I think it's mostly an ability to bullshit with conviction.  The executives in my company are nearly all morons.  How did they get there?  They know how to say the right bullshit words at the right time to get other morons to hire them.

Funny thing is after firing Butch Jones, he announced he wasn't going to use a search firm instead opting to conduct the search himself. One failed attempted hire and numerous other coaches declining the job and now he finds himself without a job.

How does anyone think hiring Schiano was a good idea, especially at a place like Tennesee where they have delusions of grandeur?

Even absent all the PSU stuff, he is last known as a failed NFL coach and a meh DC of OSU.  He shouldn't be getting an offer at an SEC school after not being a HC for 5 years.  If you are a power 5 program (that isn't like Kentucky or Rutgers) you don't grab a coordinator as your new HC unless its a very highly regarding up and coming OC/DC.  Joe Moorhead I can see, Schiano.. no chance.  He should have to prove himself at a lower level program before getting the keys to a big program

- Search started with John Gruden (w/ rumors the AD had a contract in place but couldn't get university approval). Gruden last coached in 2008, and last coached college in 1989.

- Chip Kelley gets the UCLA job, taking him off Tennessee's list

- Made overtures to Dan Mullen, who wanted to wait out Florida (and got it)

- They get a memorandum of understanding with Schiano. This goes south quickly

- They go after super old Daved Cutcliff. He declines

- They interview Mike Gundy. Also declines

- Jim Bob Cooter of the Lions (an alumnus) turns down even an interview

- They go after Brohm. Purdue fans despair. He says nope.

- They go after NC States Doeren. Nope

- The AD gets an agreement in place w/ Mike Leach. The AD is fired before this is executed

- !!!!

In hindsight, Tennessee hiring a search firm so they didn't publicly telegraph every failure may have been a good idea

This was all-time bad when the Schiano fiasco occurred. The rest of this has just been a big, large, juicy bonus.

Tennessee got turned down by the coaches of Purdue, NC State, and Duke. The football coaches. Let that sink in.

My wife went to Duke.  He is a God there.  A bowl game once every few years and he's good.

They still can't believe their good fortune at an occasional Belk Bowl, that's haw bad it was for many years.

They just want something mildly pleasant to hold them over in the fall until basketball starts.

They'll probably bring back Philip Fullmer as the AD and he'll hire someone with Tennessee ties who at his press conference will say, "This is Tennessee. I'd have walked to Tennessee for this job."

This Christmas season, take a moment to look around you and give thanks for the great many blessings bestowed upon each and every one of us. Family, friends, the fact that we're NOT Tennessee fans... The list goes on.

I kind of feel bad for Currie.   After totally botching the search he gets lucky and lands Leach which seems better than every name mentioned before and he gets axed before he can seal the deal.

In my Friday Posbang posting this earlier today, I included a GIF poking fun at Currie's alleged driving skills. I was going to further suggest that just before he hires a new HC, he'll probably get fired. I didn't do it, thinking it impossible. I totally underestimated UT!

You've got myriad courtships gone awry, you've got knives in the back (et tu, Fulmer?), you've got heads getting lopped off, nervous kings, and somewhere Falstaff and an impish little Puck comes out at the end to whisper to the Vols Nation thusly:

If we AD idiots have offended, Think but this, and all is mended, That you have but slumber’d here While these visions of a coach did appear. And this weak and idle theme, No more yielding but a dream, Gentle Vols, do not reprehend: if you pardon, we will mend. Also, we're calling Lane Kiffin.

Not sure if this is entirely accurate, but if this is indeed what is happening, this is possibly the most glorious shitshow in college football coaching search history now:
