Confirmed: The Peters era has begun

Submitted by killerseafood3 on

Harbaugh confirmed Peters is the new starting QB going forward. Probably doesn't need a new thread, neg me if you want.

I feel same way and this start against this team instills confidence especially if its followed up against the next two weak, but better teams. JH was playing the long game, while also giving a senior his shot and not rattling a rookie. Outside of the MSU loss our record is where I thought it would be.  JOK earned the MSU start and that game woulda been tough for a first time start and BP doesn't beat PSU.

BUT... Quattro you've been hating on the play peters squad on various threads for weeks, saying bring mccaffrey would be next. well JOK and BP played the same team today and it was crystal clear who played better.

Peters has been stepping it up being more vocal towards the end of camp.  Harbaugh is very loyal to his starting Qb and gives them every chance to do well.  Its better to not have started Peters last week, but it just goes to show you that a simplified offense like we had today works well when you have a qb who can hit passes.

The schedule helps with this move. Last week would have been tough. Rutgers came at a great time. Nice to give Peters an extended look in a low-risk situation (Rutgers lost to EMU at home a few weeks ago). Minnesota has been disappointing this year, but will be a step up from Rutgers. Then the aggressive, but limited Maryland before the proverbial stuff gets real.

But if he makes a big play for every big mistake he makes, I'd be satisfied because with O'Korn it was really just mistakes in the end. For a few weeks it seemed like those simple 9-10 yard passes that every CFB team routinely executes were outside our reach. Even if Peters throws picks or the odd errant throw..it feels like a semblance of a passing game is on the table now.

Not from me it wasn't. I said from the start that JOK was not good and that Speight was decent and cool under pressure. I have always said it was a bad move bringing JOK here. I think Peters is the best QB on the roster and McCaffrey is #2. Then Speight. I can't say on the others because I've never seen them play. For all we know Malzone could be okay. Can't trust that he isn't just because he hasn't played here. That ship has sailed. Not only that but look at Iowa State's QB. If you saw Gameday you saw how it works sometimes.

Did you think he played that great? I don’t know what you were watching but that wasn’t some amazing QB performance. We need to pump the brakes a bit because when he starts to struggle like perhaps against a DJ Durkin defense, this place is going to lose its collective mind in despair. He made several pretty poor throws including one that should’ve been a pick 6. Yes, the offensive line stepped up with a different energy on the field, yes his decisiveness allowed him to get away with some less than stellar throws that would’ve been trouble if they were a second later. But there were some pretty bad throws including the TD to Evans, the fade to DPJ was a duck and missing a wide open McKeon. He moved well in and out of the pocket, threw okay on the run a couple of times. He had what looked to be some miscommunications in handoffs as well. He wasn’t hurried that much and barely took any hits. He still has A TON to prove. This was encouraging but it was far from spectacular. Against a better opponent those would be much more glaring. I’m cautiously optimistic and think the unfettered optimism around here is certainly not warranted. If this was all we got to see of him and Speight was coming back next week, I’m not even close to convinced Peters would get the start over him.

what's scary is to think about all that you outlined and how much better it looked than what the offense was before he was in. there will be growing pains but he brings a dimension of down field passing that had been absent for a month. cautious optimism, week to week growth and things will be much better going into the OSU game.

So M wins 35-21???

With JOK in there, I wasn't 100% sure M was going to win.  Watching him play, it's like his brain turns to scrambled eggs on passing plays.  He may possess the physical tools, but I don't think his mind can process everything a QB needs to in that short a time period.

When I watched BP, I could see he was actually going through progressions.  That alone gave me hope.  Everyone in the stadium could see the difference.  Heck, the team seemed to notice.  There was a lot more energy on the sidelines and in the crowd as M started making plays it wasn't making before.

Things are rosey because progress is being made.  We haven't seen a whole lot of that this year, at least on the offensive side of the ball.

That’s very true, I agree 100% and I hope that a few weeks of improvement will have him ready. I don’t think it’s impossible for him to get there in time for OSU, it does give me hope—hope I didn’t have before if we were relying on O’Korn or the Speight we saw this season, but there is a lot of growing to do between now and then.

If, if ,if.   Let's be clear. He had the highest QB rating of any Michigan QB this year so far. In his first game. He did fine.

He will make a lot of big mistakes in tougher games. That is to be expected. But for today, he had only 4 incompletions and it was a dumpster fire until he came in. We dominated after that.

Defenses will see that he can get confused by disguised coverages, because that's on film. They'll be doing that a lot starting next week. They'll test to see how he does against pressure--Rutgers didn't dent the pocket much, and we know our OL is vulnerable to blitzes. Can Peters make the right read when pressure is disguised?

Sooner or later Michigan will get off schedule and Peters will have to make some tough plays. He may struggled in those situations, even if he is on track to be great.

And, as you said, people will go crazy if they have their expectations set improperly. It will be back to insisting that Pep Hamilton or Tim Drevno or Jay Harbaugh are absolutely the one reason that the team is bad. Or that this is a problem dating back to a regime three coaches and two athletic directors ago, or something. When, in fact, it's a RS freshman QB who doesn't yet have the playbook mastered and can't yet make all of the reads.

I think Peters was very encouraging, but I agree with almost everything you say.

Lol if you think a healthy Speight should get the start over Peters at this point, all I can do is be appreciative that you have no influence over Michigan coaching decisions. Nobody thinks BP is a Heisman candidate, but that's a pretty damn impressive performance for a RS freshman making his first lengthy game appearance. Far better than Speight had played at ANY point this year

Peters said this in the locker room after the game:  "I saw man coverage, one-on-one with Chris," said Peters. "I wanted to give him a chance to make a play and he made a great play on the ball."  O'Korn HAS NEVER SEEN man coverage, because he literally cant spot that kind of thing.  Refreshing to have a QB who can see coverage before and while it happens.

Happy for Peters but also remembering everyone wondering why Okorn wasn't in earlier after the Purdue game. Let's try to not overreact to one partial game against an inferior opponent again.

Peeps were calling for O'Korn to replace Speight before the Purdue game?  Uhh.  I dont think so.  If there were calls for O'Korn to replace Speight, they were few and far between.  Before the Purdue game, all of us still remembered how O'Korn played at home vs Indiana last year.

No, no, no.  We may have been too gitty about O'Korn after this year's Purdue game, but no one called for O'Korn to replace Speight this season.  Once O'Korn became a turnover machine during the Sparty game, EVERYONE was calling for Peters to replace O'Korn.
