In Defense of Jim Harbaugh

In Defense of Jim Harbaugh - (As if the man needs defending)

Despised SEC troll Pete Finebaum is at it again labeling Jim Harbaugh a mediocre coach. Most of what Feinbaum spews concerning Michigan football is to stir up our fanbase and draw attention to his work.  In the manner in which Michigan lost yesterday, I would expect a professional to display mature tact when assessing the game but that is too much to ask of Pete. However, I believe the troll Finebaum is no different from many college football fans today including many Michigan fans and because of that perspective is needed.

The delusionary nature of fans

College football fans including ours have unrealistic expectations of teams and programs. Everyone wants to win and with college football resources are a plenty. No coach is going to win every game not Saban, Swinney, Meyer, Franklin, Fisher, or Harbaugh. A delusional FSU fan decided to taunt Jimbo Fisher after yesterday’s loss to Louisville. Fisher has only won nearly 80% of the games he has coached; achieved four top ten rankings; and won one national championship. Jimbo Fisher is an excellent coach whose sole downfall is that his first string all world quarterback suffered a season ending injury.

We were delighted when Ohio State was crushed by Clemson 31-0 in the national playoff and equally delighted when the same happened to Mark Dantonio the previous year. Oh that same Clemson team beat Saban’s Alabama squad as well. No coach wins every game and even top coaches have teams which are blown out from time-to-time. We are still fans of amateur athletics! Students who have to go to class, make grades, and then find time to play football at the highest level.

Michigan is one of many top programs. We live in a different era in two ways. First, many college football programs have top level coaches and facilities. No longer do you have a handful of major college programs that carry the bulk of the limelight and big games for college football. TCU can field a team to beat USC; Troy can beat LSU; Boise State can beat Oklahoma; Michigan State can lose to Maryland; and I can go on and on. Michigan is not a part of the “big two and little eight division” anymore.

Second, we don’t share division titles any longer. Previously Michigan could lose two conference games and still have the opportunity to win a Big 10 championship. Michigan has 42 of them; how many are shared titles (WD probably knows)? Those days are over and Michigan not only has to win essentially every game in their division which is the toughest in college football but then play in a championship game. We will win a lot more of those titles and we will do so with Coach Harbaugh just not this year.

Harbaugh’s debt

I read a lot of griping about Harbaugh’s offense and how it must be simplified for the college game. No it does not. Jim Harbaugh owes we the fans nothing. He owes his athletes the opportunity to excel beyond college football. Many of those athletes come here to be coached into the next level and that includes running a pro-style offense. Coach Harbaugh will recruit a quarterback (he has two of them) that can run this offense and the offense will be efficient. Implementing an offense that diminishes a player’s opportunity to compete at the next level is not a sacrifice the Michigan program should be making. Michigan’s recruiting advantage for every position is “the opportunity” to have a greater chance of making an NFL roster.

On the same topic, Mike McCray must stay on the field.  McCray may be removed in specific situations but he is the only player with extensive experience to position the others correctly to be able to stop plays. For all of McCray’s deficiencies with his speed, the drop off for successfully defending plays would be far greater if he is off the field. He is staying put and it is in the best interest of the team. He earned his role as captain of the defense.

Same argument could be made for the quarterback position. Don’t expect to see Peters in any game where Michigan has a chance to win this season and don’t blame Harbaugh for putting the team above us. Fans can easily sit back and say “what is the difference between 8-4 and 10-2” as we put in none of the work and all of the Monday morning quarterbacking. Peters or McCaffery will come in at the right time, when needed, and it will be for their best interest from a coaching veteran who has a long track record of developing talent. The same man who gave Jake Rudock great coaching and a possibility at a long NFL career will do the same for Speight, O'Korn, Peters, and McCaffery.

Equally amazing to me is that we the fans post as if we are able to see a deficiency and have a magical solution that will make everything better. Of course this solution is what the coach is unable to see. Fire Drevno, Fire Pep, or Fire them all!!!! Ever ponder the consequences of such a knee jerk reaction? Brian Kelly was applauded by our fans for his coaching changes midseason but most of those same fans would be livid if our team with this talent went 4-8. Kelly’s staff is only in year one and there is no guarantees that they will have a continued high level of success. Jim Harbaugh is surrounded by coaches; all of his family members are coaches; and he is not oblivious to the issues of the team. Harbaugh is not going to fire anyone midseason nor should he.

Harbaugh’s Accomplishments

This is a personal pet peeve of mine. The Jim Harbaugh has “won nothing” statement as if the be all and end all is having a championship which Jim Harbaugh has those as well.

As a college player

Two Big Ten Championships (81,86)

A Fiesta Bowl Championship (85)

An unclaimed National Championship (85, Matthews, Sagarin)

As an NFL player

NFC Central Division Champion (Chicago Bears, 1990)

As a recruiter

2002 I-AA National Champion - Western Kentucky

As an assistant

2002 AFC Champion – Oakland Raiders – QB Coach

As a college coach

Two time pioneer league champion – University of San Diego (2005, 2006)

Orange Bowl Champion – Stanford Cardinals (2010)

As a professional coach

Two time NFC West Champion (2011, 2012)

NFC Champion (2012)

Even without word “champion” next to his name, it is clear to see that Harbaugh excels at his job because of the improved level of play and winning percentage everywhere he has coached. All those big coaching names above had similar records on their way to building elite programs. Michigan is better because of Jim Harbaugh. I hope he coaches Michigan for another 15 years. I hope people will learn to endure the losses and enjoy this man as he coaches Michigan to more championships in the future.

In short, Paul Finebaum is a douche, I would hope Michigan fans are not.

He can certainly defend himself. But he doesn't need defending because he is not on the hotseat. Regardless of what he decides to do with personnel he will never be fired from here.

That being said, you are wrong on several counts.

"No coach is going to win every game not Saban, Swinney, Meyer, Franklin, Fisher, or Harbaugh."

Saban and Meyer are in a class by themselves. Franklin has a lot more to prove still (although this could very well be the year he joins that club if things go right for them). I don't know why you are even bringing this up though because no one is asking Harbaugh to win every game. If we could just beat OSU and win a Big Ten Championship (like Franklin) for the first time in 13+ years the fans would burn down the town in celebration. Michigan fans are not delusional for pointing out that Harbaugh does not yet have a signature win. It's disappointing.

"No longer do you have a handful of major college programs that carry the bulk of the limelight and big games for college football."

Alabama and OSU would like a word with you.

Harbaugh was brought in to win the Big Ten, beat OSU, and make the playoffs. Until he does that there will always be critics believing he can't do it. Especially SEC-loving trolls. But why on earth are you listening to Ol' Petey anyway?

Not in defense of Jim Harbaugh.

He needs to cut out the Country Club...trips to Rome bullshit.

That breeds Entitlement...and this team has accomplished SHIT.

It puts a Target on his and the teams back in the national media...and makes him and the program a laughing stock across the country when they fail.

The team does not deserve the reward, nor that type of underserved hype and publicity.

Look at the talent on this team....

Look at how they are underachieving, not taking coaching well...wilting under the slightest pressure

THAT is on Jim Harbaugh.  He has become SOFT and is running a Country Club Program.

Had enough of that with Hoke.  Its not getting any better.

He had better get back to basics....5 man sled for the OL.... tackling dummies for the defense.

Fire his underachieving coaching staff buddies and his son too.

Fuck the trips overseas.  This team should not be rewarded with that kind of posh lifestyle.

That is the way it is...and you know it.

Jim Harbaugh has become SOFT and Pampered and it shows in how the team plays.

Fuck the Podcasts too.. Jim.  Its time to get tough.

The media shenanigans have run their course I agree--I'd rather Harbaugh make headlines for winning games rather than trips to Rome and milk commercials.

I was at the game and watched the team walk into the tunnel and they looked pretty expressionless. Kind of like "Well, we just got our asses kicked... what do we do now?" TBH it was good to see they weren't laughing and joking around because that's definitely the sign of a team that doesn't give a shit about improving. They also didn't look angry or sad, but I'm pretty sure they realized they were in over their heads from the beginning of the game. I realize they made it 13-14 in the 2nd quarter, but the ease with which PSU scored on their first two drives really set the tone. The defense got gashed and was no match for PSU's skill players and gameplan. Michigan didn't give up after going down 14-0 obviously, but I think everyone on the team was surprised at PSU's firepower. Based on the number of predictions of a "rock fight" on this blog, I think most of us fans were too.

Honestly where do they go from here for the rest of the season? Is there really any hope of the offense improving with O'Korn at the helm and a shallow/medicore OL, WR corps, and running game? I want to have hope but they just look lost and overwhelmed out there. The defense had been a shining spot but they clearly aren't as other-wordly as we initially thought. Do we really expect them to walk into Camp Randall and beat an undefeated Wisconsin team with playoff dreams? Or an OSU team with a veteran J.T. Barret clicking on all cylinders?

I will be at the Wisconsin and OSU games to cheer them on anyway, praying for a miacle, but the logical side of me says that these problems are going to take a while to iron out. And everyone knows it, including Harbaugh and the team. 8-4 with their best win over a middling, most likely unranked Florida team is the essence of medicrity.

Back away from the keyboard. It's gonna be alright. If you feel they are underachieving then your expectations need defending. They'll be 8-2 going into Madison. As the line continues to improve incremental amounts and the staff coaches Okorn or Peters a bit more, there is at least a 50/50 they come out 9-2. If they finish 9-3 or 10-2, you should eat a lemon.

It’s the crazy “antics” of Harbaugh that got this talent to sign with Michigan in the first place. I’m tired of this criticism of Harbaugh. Michigan was swirling the drain when he got here, and it took some creative/out of the box techniques in order to put good classes together. As much as I hate to say it, Mork was right.

The trips to Rome and the media attention probably got us some stars that we otherwise wouldn’t.

Michigan has been a recruiting power for the last 50 freakin years. I wonder how we did it all those years. And what stars did those antics bring us. Was it Gary, who proclaimed Michigan his leader under Hoke. A look at our 2018 class will show you we have won very few recruiting battles and lost more legacy kids than we ever have. Grade A recruiting there.

Thanks for the effort, but the guy needs no defense.

He is a great coach, and he is ours, peroid. How do we use this beat down for improvement is the question.  JH will figure out way.

We still need a few more players to compete with an offense of the caliber we faced Saturday.

It's as simple as this: people have high expectations BECAUSE of Jim Harbaugh. Our team is not great right now because we have no depth. If our last 2 years were middling, people wouldn't be as pissed as they are now. No other coach who would coach Michigan would be doing better. He does not need defending, we will be fine. Our expectations were only so damn high because we're lucky enough to have Jim here.

I 100% agree with everything. Not every team can win every game every year. There are definitely going to be years where we have “growing pains “ and this is one of them. Not many people can run a program like Nick Satan. But if anyone can do that for our program it’s the guy we have here now. Is it going to happen this year. No. But if we are lucky enough to keep him around a long enough time...I truly think he gets us into the playoffs.
Lastly, I think he will make the right adjustments. With coaching. And as always with players. I’m sure there are armchair QBs who will tout their higher football IQ than JH. But I think most of us on here know that some internet slappie doesn’t hold more credibility than our head coach with all the above credentials. No one knows this team and loves this team better than our coach. No one wants to win more than him. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

Not to defend Finebaum, but his latest remarks have not been to say that JH is a mediocre coach, or not a good coach. He’s saying that basically the honeymoon is over and so the meter is running on Harbaugh. He figures Harbaugh will only put up with banging his head against the OSU wall (and now PSU) and dealing with the impatient UM institution for so long before he decides to bolt for the NFL again. The only mitigating factor would be potential lack of team control in the NFL, which may be negotiable.

All of those coaches you named except for Franklin have either been to the CFP or won a National Championship. This fanbase has gotten so soft I swear. Let people vent and get their frustrations out and then move onto the next week. Are people not supposed to be frustrated? Are fans not supposed to get upset having a horrible offense that can only throw for 60 yards a game? Nobody wants Harbaugh fired, dumb ignorant fans will just blow hot air because they are just throwing a fit. People are passionate about Michigan football and are sick of being Mediocre. I have been alive long enough to see Michigan be successful in the 80s and 90s. The way this Michigan team has performed the past 10 years is unacceptable.

Nothing against the OP, but we shouldn't even need threads like these. It's like being back in the Hoke and RR era. Harbaugh is neither one of those guys. He will get us back on top again.

The pressure to win in 2018 is building and building. Next year's OSU and MSU games now perhaps turn into must, absolutely win games.

But there will be issues next season as well. There will be a tough on the road schedule (@ ND, MSU and OSU), two new offensive lineman, new inexpereinced QB possibly, WR's will still be young. These will be things some people will start pointing at to rationalize if they don't take a big step forward next season. I won't be one of those people.

These comments anymore. I don't know why we have to handle JH with kid gloves and continue to prop him up.

If the MSU game didn't remove the sheen from him, Saturday night sure did.

I understand the team lost a lot. I get it. But you want to see really good, strong signs that they will be a championship-level team in 2019, when everyone has been saying how incredible they will be. Have we had ANY of that this year? Wins against pretty bad teams, and two pretty bad losses. The offense is SO far behind the times, are they suddenly going to be a top 25 unit next year? Don't see it.

And yeah the defense is good. But Penn State made them look like a JV team.

Agreed. Posts like this made sense during the coaching search. Now they have the opposite effect of their stated purpose - they are the uptmost expression of waning confidence. Harbaugh is our coach, and no serious UM fan is calling for him to be fired. But serious Michigan fans should be critical of what seems like many lackluster performances, coaches that are outcoached, and an offense that seems lost.

I'm not sure he's the offensive genius that he was touted to be. And I'm not saying saying that because of a quick reaction to a bad loss. I'm actually not even too upset by this beating. I'm thinking that because in the time that he has been here I've haven't seen much creativity or optimal use of the personnel in place.

He probably needs to partner up with a strong, creative, college experienced OC.

We as fans need patience. Understand that we've been patient for 10 years but it's true. Harbaugh is only 3 years in. He developing a culture and we've seen the flashes of where we are going. It's bright. We will be up there with bama Clemson ohio st and others year 4-5 and on. People also need to realize we technically have the opportunity to finish with a better record this year than last 2 years. We can still be 11-2 this year. Us fans need to stop over reacting and support this team. I know we are tired of hearing it but we are a young team. Just cuz other schools have young teams win conferences and make playoff runs doesn't automatically mean every team will. There are things to build on and things that need changed. Harbaugh knows what he's doing. He's a professional we are just fans.

I still believe Harbaugh is the right guy, because let's face it: if he can't bring this program back, then I don't think anyone can. At that point we're just Nebraska 2.0. We saw what he did at Stanford in four years. What he did in the NFL. There is zero reason he can't do that here.

I'm all for patience right now, but he needs results. Real results, like beating really good teams on the road. Or beating OSU. Next year will be his fourth year, "his guys" will start to become upperclassmen, and let's take a look at what each other powerhouse coach is doing, or has done, in their fourth year at their current stop:

Saban - 10-3. Saban's one "down year," which was still a double digit win season sandwiched in between two national championships.

Meyer - 12-1, probably should've been in the playoff

Dantonio - 11-2. Got exposed by Alabama in the Capital One Bowl, but 11 wins is 11 wins.

Fisher - 14-0. National Championship

Franklin - currently 7-0, probably not finishing the regular season any worse than 11-1, with a very real chance of making the playoff even if he loses to OSU.

For everyone saying "wait till next year," the schedule does Michigan no favors next year. On the road for all three rivals. My point is that I'm happy to give him more time, but at some point, "wait till next year" needs to become "look at what we've done this year." Harbaugh is getting $9 million a year. For that kind of money there should be better results.

Don't want to start a new thread but Clay Travis (Fox Sports Radio - Outkick the Coverage) has been spewing that "Jim Harbaugh is the most overrated coach in modern CFB history"

I normally like Travis' show but he is being a troll about this and it is annoying.

His key points:

1. Paid $9M per year and expected to deliver results like Saban and Meyer

2. Same record as Brady Hoke through same number of games

3. Can't finish better than 3rd in his own division

4. 6-5 in his last 11 games

5. Will go 8-4 this year

6. Still doesn't have a QB

I am not thrilled with the last three weeks and there are some issues here but calling Harbaugh "the most overrated coach in modern CFB history" makes Travis look like a stupid troll.

Counter points:

1. No reasonable person expected Harbaugh to compete for championships right away considering the tire fire he inherited. Meyer and to a lesser extent, Saban, inherited much better situations. The fact that we were a bad spot away from making the CFP last year put us ahead of schedule. Harbaugh produced back-to-back 10 win seasons with players who won 12 games in the two years prior.

2. Seriously? Hoke got off to a good start but immediately fell off a cliff right at this point. If he had maintained that level of performance, he would still be the coach at Michigan. We have 18 starters returning next year and the last 2 recruiting classes were loaded so this program is trending upward.

3. Uhhh, hands down the toughest division in CFB. It's not like the Big 10 West or ACC Coastal.

4. Ok. Lost a tough night game on the road to a very good Iowa team. Hosed by the refs in OT as OSU. Lost by 1 point to FSU (in Florida). Monsoon game vs. MSU. Debacle against PSU.

5. Every knowledgable and reasonable person could look at the roster and  Hoke's disastrous 2014 and 2015 recuiting and see that 2017 was going to be a challenging year. The beat down we gave Florida in the opener artificially raised expectations. Once again, we have 18 starters returning next year.

6. Yeah - no shit and this needs to be fixed. Of course, our starting QB was knocked out for the year. FSU lost their QB and have been a tire fire since then (they are 2-4). Does that make Jimbo Fischer overrated?

I don't want to give any clicks, but here is the link if you want to hear for yourselves:

Harbaugh is a good coach, but he has his flaws. He's arrogant to a fault, stubbornly insisting on doing things his way, even when the evidence on the field suggests otherwise. The halftime adjustments agains MSU and PSU were abyssmal. Also, where are slant routes and other quick routes? All the passing routes seem to take forever to develop, and the OL isn't capable of blocking well enough for that kind of passing game at this point.

Another thing that bothers me, is with all of the athletes and quickness this team has on offense, the insistence on running a pro style doesn't end up using these advantages much. Insert a bit of spread in there. Did you see how dynamic PSU's offense was? That's what we're capable of if we diversify.

I think at the end of the year, Drevno and Hamilton are going to have to go away for this team to build on the potential we have.

JH's biggest problem right now is that he overachieved by taking a 5-7 team of essentially the same players to 10-3 in the first year. It appears to me that fans would have been more patient with him if he had taken a route similar to his Stanford route of slow continuous progress. Even with that team, he didn't really "win anything" until his 4th year.

I love Jim and want him to be our coach for a long time, but the man better start producing. I know the QB situation is awful right now and the team is young, which is why I'm giving him a pass this season. 2018 and 2019 should be stellar years, assuming the QB situation is under control.

This season is pretty ugly and it starts with the fans more than with the team or the staff. Fools deluding themselves into vastly unrealistic expectations based on little more than some arbitrary notion of 'what to expect in year 3'. The same fools then come on message boards to have childish temper tantrums about what they believe they're entitled to expect 'in year 3'. It's a sad affair and really the negativity that so many fans bring makes you wonder about our fanbase really. 50th in the country in cheering for the team, always top 5 in complaining about it.

We need to wake up to the stark reality that Harbaugh may not succeed here. The direction of the program seems to hinge on too many variables. Harbaugh honestly may be a better fit for the NFL where he would have the players necessary to run his system.

I still believe JH is the right man for the job but he needs to fire Drevno Hamilton and his son and evolve into a modern scheme. Zone read no huddle dual threat. Until we do that I’m afraid we are stuck waiting for a messiah QB that may never show.
