Awful Announcing?: 2017 Michigan @ Penn State - Fowler, Herbstreit, Rinaldi & Taylor
Looks like Michigan @ Penn State announcers are as follows:
7:30 p.m.: [19] Michigan @ [2] Penn State (ABC)
Announcers: Chris Fowler (play-by-play), Kirk Herbstreit (analyst), Maria Taylor (reporter), Tom Rinaldi (reporter)

Grateful that PSU alum and homer Matt Millen isn't doing color.

when it comes to announcing, where most of the time we're stuck with troglodytes, blowhards or whatever Brock Huard is, this seems like an odd complaint. Fowler and Herbie may not be perfect but they know the game and are professionals at least

I combined some of your descriptors to coin the term for Brock Huard:
"blowodyte"
October 18th, 2017 at 1:34 PM ^
but 'troglohard" also works

Will Herbie be were his grey suit red tie
October 18th, 2017 at 1:02 PM ^
I think they are good except for how many times will Herbie bring up or mention OSU, he always does somehow

Corso should have been carted off to Happy Hills Home a few years ago. It's actually sad to still see him on the air.

Less is more!
They all say the same things over and over. I know more about Michigan football than any of them except Brandy and Dierdorf.
Beckmann and Brandy (Michigan) & Miller and Brandy (Lions) are my favorites.
Nessler and Blackledge were the best network duo but Nessler went to CBS.
Play by play:
Nessler: right balance of saying enough but not too much. Gets excited enough to distinguish the big plays. Nice voice.
Fowler: Uses too many awkward words to descibe the action. Seems too unnatural.
Gus Johnson and Levy: Gets too excited about everything since they are suppose to be impartial. Levy wants to joke too much
Analyst:
Spielman: He knows defense and toughness and gets to the point.
Herbie: Has diarrehia of the month. Uses way too many words to make his point. Talks before he knows what he's going to say. Feels he has to continuously talk.
Danielson: Not as good as he use to be. He wears on me.
Millen: He was the worst GM in the history of the NFL (Lions record). I can't get past that to be objective. He is bias toward Ped State.
Griese: Bland. Nothing stands out to me.

As long as it's not Brock Huard.
October 18th, 2017 at 12:20 PM ^
I'd take my drunk Uncle Mark teamed with Brock Huard over Fowler/Herbsteit. Hell, yes.
Otherwise, my mute button still works.
October 18th, 2017 at 12:27 PM ^
Who you gonna listen to? Ufre doesn't call games, anymore, and nobody else on radio comes close.
October 18th, 2017 at 12:52 PM ^
I actually listen to Brandy and Dierdorf. Yes, they are bad. But they're mine.
October 18th, 2017 at 1:29 PM ^
If I'm watching live, which I haven't been able to do much this year. Lately it's Brandy and Dierdorf in the car or the DVR later in the day.
I don't care if Brandy sucks at play by play. I want some homer bias and knowledge of our team in my announcers.

From what I have seen, Herbie goes a little out of his way to say positive things about Michigan.
The only really dumb thing I can recall hearing him say was that Michigan was "A year away" last year. He knew what we were losing and still stood by that prediction.
October 18th, 2017 at 1:09 PM ^
I remember that because it bothered me too. Trollers gonna troll.
October 18th, 2017 at 12:14 PM ^
Who else was it going to be? As expected and fine by me.
October 18th, 2017 at 12:19 PM ^
They had Levy/Greise do the ABC primetime game this past weekend (and put the Fowler/Herbstreit combo on the Alabama game on ESPN). I can't think of another instance where they've done that, though (my guess is that had to do with the game being on the west coast and Game Day not being on the west coast).
October 18th, 2017 at 12:27 PM ^
But that was also because Gameday was not at the ABC primetime game location.
October 18th, 2017 at 12:59 PM ^
often, though? I feel like Herbie has had to fly to other places for the night game.

we don't fall to 0-4 in front of this crew in the last two years.
October 18th, 2017 at 12:15 PM ^
Not Brock Huard? I'm in.
October 18th, 2017 at 12:29 PM ^
Whacha' mean? Brock gave Hurst national attention for the draft last week!
(Do I need the /s to do this right?)
October 18th, 2017 at 12:19 PM ^
...who routinely watches games with the sound off?

October 18th, 2017 at 12:35 PM ^
I cannot watch a game on mute - no matter who is announcing it. I remember waaay back in the day (1980) when CBS did an experiment where they televised the Dolphins/Jets game without announcers. I absoultely hated it.
October 18th, 2017 at 5:58 PM ^
...more and more so now. Bunch of chowderheads.
October 18th, 2017 at 12:20 PM ^
Not sure why there is hate with this crew. They seem pretty solid to me.
Buckeye aside, I dig Herbie. He's pretty even headed in his analysis (moreso than other people, at least).
I also like Fowler a lot. He's been great in tennis coverage the past several years. He and McEnroe have a great rapport together.
Unrelated to Saturday's game but on the same vein of commentators, I've become a big fan of Greg McElroy. He's been doing a few west coast games this year, and I've found his commentary to be pretty good (and pretty funny...along with Mack Brown! He's been pretty good too!).
October 18th, 2017 at 12:23 PM ^
I don't want to neg you for an honest opinion, but I'm close. They are nothing like you describe. In any way.
October 18th, 2017 at 12:27 PM ^
I actually like Herbie, think he's pretty good at his job (not very good mind you) and does well to keep any favoritism away. In fact, on Gameday this year during week one, he predicted our defense would be BETTER than last year--only person I'm aware of who predicted that. And he was right. Herbie is pretty good, Fowler also pretty good.
October 18th, 2017 at 12:31 PM ^
can you imagine if brent fuss-budget was still announcing? as for herbie, the guy is pretty solid, voice doesn't grate, and at least i've never heard him come close to the galloway type trolling that so many properly cite as deserving of scorn.

Nice. I like Chris and Kirk. Also, I assume everyone knew this was going to happen. GameDay will be there. Why would they send those two announcers elsewhere? This is a huge match. It has happened before, but it's rare.

October 18th, 2017 at 12:34 PM ^
He does stuff on Yahoo.
October 18th, 2017 at 12:29 PM ^
I don't mind Herbie. He doesn't really offer in depth analysis like Chris Spielman does, but he is pretty objective as doesn't go on tangents too often.
October 18th, 2017 at 12:33 PM ^
It could be the producers don't want Herbie going into a lot of technical stuff. I don't know though, maybe that's just his style. He definitely studies up on his personnel well.

They tend to do the biggest games of the week. I'm fine with this.

Not sure how warranted the disdain for Herbstreit is on this board. I enjoy listening to him on Gameday and announcing, unless he is announcing an Ohio St game.
He has some passion to him and clearly knows his stuff.
October 18th, 2017 at 1:35 PM ^
Yeah, I actually like Herbstreit. It's a low bar though. As long as I can get through a game without them annoying the shit out of me, I'm fine with the announcers.
October 18th, 2017 at 12:40 PM ^
I really don't mind Herbstreit. He's a very objective announcer, especially when he calls Michigan games. Gives credit where credit is due and points out problems where there blatantly are problems. He was a huge fan of the Harbaugh hire and thought it would bring a lot of credibility back to the conference.
Now Joey Galloway can go screw himself, but Herbstreit is alright in my book.
