Awful Announcing?: 2017 Michigan @ Penn State - Fowler, Herbstreit, Rinaldi & Taylor

Submitted by markusr2007 on

Looks like Michigan @ Penn State announcers are as follows:

7:30 p.m.: [19] Michigan @ [2] Penn State (ABC)
Announcers: Chris Fowler (play-by-play), Kirk Herbstreit (analyst), Maria Taylor (reporter), Tom Rinaldi (reporter)

Grateful that PSU alum and homer Matt Millen isn't doing color.

It means we're relevant and playing in big games.  Same reason for wanting Gus and Klatt.  The only reason I pay attention to what's being said is for injury updates.  Any other meaningful stats or information is usually delivered by graphic first.

Chris Spielman.  Something very sincere and real about his analysis.  Wouldn't mind hearing him do a Michigan game.  Though maybe not against osu.

Regardless, it's going to be a good game.  We will surprise people!

GO BLUE!!

Since it is the ABC prime time game, you usually get the option of a Skycam channel and I want to say sometimes there is an All-22 option, both available on WatchESPN.  I've watched non-Michigan games with the Skycam and it's interesting - you get full on stadium audio and no TV announcers.  Kind of like being there but with an impossibly good seat.  The Skycam does fail to get into position from time to time though and you can miss part of a play.  Anyways, my point is there should be more options than just muting Herbie and Fowler.

is so awful - I don't understand why he still has a job.

Herbstreit has improved so much over his early years. He is actually really really good now IMO.  I have even heard him do OSU games and was really quite impartial - way more than I could be if I was doing Michigan games.

About who’s announcing than who is officiating. I swear to God if we get the O’Neal crew AGAIN.... Although, I’d rather them than whatever crew did the IU game. So neither of those two.

and Brady.  Yes, One play delayed so need to sync, but at least you know the M Oline that is playing.

Dierdorf is more than fair. Brandy is Brandy.

Go Blue.

I don't understand all of the hate for Brock Huard...

Oh wait, nevermind. I get it. He's awful and provides no insight.

On the flipside, I have been impressed with Tony Romo in the booth in the NFL.

Well I think Herby and Huard and stuff and things bad good or otherwise and what not and things regarding and of that nature and respect to those things.

Of the skycam view is that they show the band at halftime! Or at least they used to.

Eh, this was supposed to be a response. I messed it up. Herbie is fine. I like Spielman better. WatchEspn skycam view is best view.

I feel like this blog hates every single announcing team for the most part. Unless it's a Michigan guy calling the game, people seem to get really bothered. I think they're all fine and sometimes say stuff I disagree with, but otherwise I usually like/don't notice them.

Wouldn't it be great if there was a set of announcers that was 100% focused on Michigan that you could listen to if you didn't want to listen to an impartial set of announcers? Perhaps this set of Michigan centric announcers could call the game via radio? You could even sync your TV feed to the radio feed. Crazy? Yes, but one can dream...

The old days of Nessler and Danielson.

ABC screwed up letting them leave. I actually miss Ron Franklin more then those two.

The one thing I've noticed is that Herbstreit seems to frequently ID players who are from Ohio.  I don't really remember the last time he ID'd any player from the state of Michigan.  I'll grant Ohio high school football is better, but c'mon.

Though Herbie was annoyingly wrong during the MSU game about the JOK "dive" on teh sidelines. Like, dude, are you watching that replay? I don't know of anyone who can act THAT well.

Blues Notes

If you are favored going into the game and have been winning, all the announcers appear to be biased toward you. If you dominate in a game the announcers appear to be biased toward  you.

If you have been losing and are underdogs, the announcers appears to be biased against you. If you are being beaten in the game, the announcers appear biased against you.

It is pretty ubiquitous.

But yes, Matt Millen sucks. That is true.

I know everyone hates an announcer or two. I actually liked Sean McDonough (sp?) prior to the “he has trouble with the snap” ordeal. Now when I hear him on MNF I almost get nauseous and my PTSD flares up. Can’t listen to him anymore.

Keith Jackson? He was to College Football what Ernie Harwell was to Tigers or Jack Buck to Baseball. Keith loved Bo, and I think he had a little bias towards Michigan.  His voice inflections were something you just couldn't teach. The man was made for College Football.

Obviously, the Eufer's, Jackson's and Harwell's are once in a generation personalities.

I think most announcers are doing their best...  Just not a big deal IMO.

I'm MUCH more concerned with the general media's portrayal of Harbaugh and Michigan.

We just watched Dantonio recruit a known rapist to campus.  The rapist raped a coed (shocker).  Coach says "don't look at me... msu admissions cleared him."

In response, the media says "what an awesome guy and coach they have at MSU...  He isn't an asshole like Harbaugh, jumping into a pool and putting on recruiting shows..."

I'm wondering if that reputation - deserved or not - is causing some of the visible ref bias?  Maybe I'm just wearing maize glasses, but I swear there is something to this.  Dantonio's teams can play as dirty as they want without any media fallout.  JH blinks and the world has a hot take?

The play by play guys typically are limited to describing the action on the field.  The color announcers then drone on incessently on whatever nonsense they feel like talking about.  I especially love it when they come into a game with a narrative that doesn't come to pass and they are stuck with nothing to talk about.
