OT: Best Cider Mill in SE Michigan?

Submitted by amir_6 on
Was thinking about taking the family to a Cider Mill Saturday morning to take our minds off the big game. Would like to hear the boards thoughts/opinions..

Yates is pretty nice. On top of cider and doughnuts, they have other vendors that sell arts and crafts, corn on the cob, pumpkins and hot dogs, among other things. There's also a nice trail in the back. I agree that it gets crowded on Saturdays, though. I've never been to Blake's, but I've heard good things about it. You probably can't go wrong with either.

Used to ride our bicycles from the Gandy Dancer to the Cider Mill on Saturday mornings.  Would leave Dexter on our bikes, meet the club riders at the Gandy Dancer, ride to Dexter have cider and donuts.  Ride back to the GD with the club, and then ride back to Dexter and get ready for the football game.

Tiny, out in the country, beautiful drive, old-fashioned Press that you can watch, usually not very busy at all (although I last went about 4 years ago, don’t live in MI, anymore). Lots of varieties of apples. Good donuts. Doesn’t have big corn mazes, etc., but I want to go to an apple orchard/cider mill, not a cheesy state fair. Recommended.

https://www.michigan.org/property/alber-s-orchard-cider-mill Absolutely worth the trip to Alber's. The folks running it now bought it from the Alber family and really care about the land and the product they are putting out. 104 varieties of apples on the property and the best cider, bar none. Donuts come from another local family and are fantastic!

It's more like a commercial, mini-theme park. If you have kids, and want to spend about $20 a person (including yourself, spouse), then go. It has a nice corn maze, decent tractor rides, a few others fun diversions. I went this fall and we all had fun.

But again, it is much too pricey - $16 or so entry fee, and while a few things are included (corn maze, tractor rides, a few fun playgrounds, a bungee running thing), you still need to pay $5 for 3 apples to shoot from the air cannon, $5 to shoot paint balls, etc or the usual $8 for 1/2 peck (or whatever) to pick apples.

If youre just going for donuts and apple picking, I go to Wasem's.

Franklin - Get there early.

Albers in Manchester - Mike the Owner is a Romulus Boy and former Michigan football GA.

I'm a Romulus boy, but older. Albers is a nice family place.

I know the question was SE MI, but if anyone ever gets to Central MI, Anderson and Girls Orchard outside of Stanton is the best in the state that I've had (Uncle John's, Parmenters, Dexter)

From Kerrytown Farmers Market last year. Because for SE Michigan - West Michigan does produce better apple cider somewhat - the cider I've bought in Kerrytown when visiting A^2 has been quite consistently excellent. It even ferments into hard cider deliciously :>)

My wife and kids love Three Cedars. Always worth the 20 minutes or so to get there.

Parmenter's is great too, as is Erwin's in South Lyon.

Damnit, I want some donuts and cider now and it is 10 PM.

It's worth visiting for the creepy silo-top animatronic pumpkin alone.

My three year old loves the corn pit.

There is a lot of broken stuff though. Mini tractors, the wooden train, cow statue.

Maybe after I bought a 10 dollar pumpkin they have enough to fix some of that.

His informal translation communicates his idea. And his Russian is presumably better (you would think) than mine. I studied under Michigan's Sergei Shishkoff for a mere two years to improve my fleet assignment so I could better-kill Soviets back in the day. After years of civilian aviation exchanges with Russia, what stupid ideas I once held.

Blakes is tied with Yates for the donuts but Yates wins hands down on the cider.

Just go early or go late to avoid the lines. Even though they look busy half the time they turn out people quick. I went last weekend just for apples and was in and out in less than 10 minutes.

From my youth...Erie Orchards near the Ohio border by 75 is amazing. They have a ton going on...from hayrides, small booths to purchase little nick-nacks and such, and huge orchards and pumpkin fields to pick your own goods...an outstanding fall classic from my youth

If you're closer to the border with Ohio, Erie Orchards in Erie MI is pretty great. You can go apple picking and stuff, and they have a corn maze and animals and all that good stuff.

I grew up near there and the setting/feel of the small town Franklin village makes it a great experience.  The place can be incredibly busy on beautiful fall weekends, but they have a good sized parking lot and a bunch of checkout stations, so it goes pretty fast once you get in line.  It's one of the really old mill sites in SE Michigan, so there's a lot of history to it.  They sell a bunch of other things too - but the pies are one of my favorites - in addition to the cider and donuts of course.

I've been to other mills and sampled the fare, and really the fresh donuts are about the same everywhere and all taste great.

Parmenters has the best cider and doughnuts. It's in downtown Northville so no apple orchard, but it's a great spot. If you're with kids you could also check out Mill Race near there.
