Guess Who's Ranked No. 1 in Total Defense?
After 4 games the Michigan defense is ranked No. 1 in the nation in Yards Per Play (3.52) and Yards Per Game (203.0).

Michigan's rushing defense is currently ranked 4th, giving up 69 YPG, just ahead of Alabama.

Michigan's scoring defense is tied for 12th (13.0 PPG), tied with the Scott Frosts.

Notable perhaps too that Michigan is ranked as high as 8th in the nation in Passing Yards Allowed (134 ypg):

Impressive work thus far, but MSU, @Indiana and @PSU loom ahead.

YPP is a very important stat. If we lead the nation at the end of the year (or are still top 3) we are going to have the opportunity to win every game. 3.5 ypp is amazing.
September 24th, 2017 at 12:19 PM ^
And if we DON'T lead the nation at the end of the year or finish in the top 3, we are STILL going to have an opportunity to win every game! We may not win them all, but we'll have an opportunity... ;-)
September 24th, 2017 at 12:32 PM ^
Lol literally, yes, we will have an opportunity no matter what.

It's dumb that it's included, but they appear to just average the other teams points for that stat, which makes no sense. If you removed the pick sixes, defense would be tied for 3rd with 10 ppg.

It's pure laziness. That or just ingnorance.

The corners are getting better in coverage. Don Brown is adjusting to control the screens that burned us against Cincy. This D can lead Michigan to a B1G championship.

covered very well yesterday. Young Dudes.

Sad we probably only get to watch them one more year. I hate that these talented kids get to leave so early.

I don't think this is an issue. Check the Cincinnati film. I know once yesterday he had to be the guy to tackle a TE that probably has 60 or so pounds on him. That's not ideal. Kinnel is not a liability.
September 24th, 2017 at 1:28 PM ^
the issue on that play was that he went way too high on that TE. He should have taken out his legs. he was there right after the catch.

Plus, the second half gameplan with O'Korn in the game was very good, and very well executed. I expect this team to come off of the bye week with a lot of confidence and firing on all cylinders.

The second half of yesterday's game was simply amazing. Purdue had NO third down conversions. Not one.
September 24th, 2017 at 12:08 PM ^
The second half of the game was a great, great defensive performance and gives me continued hope that we would be able to hang with anyone and even come from behind as we did if we can keep teams at bay. It seemed that once they had a couple series of Blough and Sindelar, they had them pretty much figured out. It's a smart defense in that regard too.
September 24th, 2017 at 3:07 PM ^
Right and from what I was hearing and reading all week, this Purdue offense was supposed to be pretty salty. They relied on a ton of trick plays to get things moving. Didn't last. If this defense holds strong and takes care of business at Penn State, watch out.

Makes it even more impressive when you look at our opponents. Florida is by no means an offensive machine, but still a top 20 team with a ton of talent on offense. Air Force's triple option is hard to stop - period. Usually you are just happy to slow it down. And Purdue has and is going to pile up some yards and points this year.
Love this defense! A long way from the Rich Rod years for damn sure...
Go Blue!

most of the starters are frosh/sophs. Giddy up!!!
September 24th, 2017 at 12:01 PM ^
Btw, #1 in sacks as well...
September 24th, 2017 at 12:06 PM ^
Michigan leads nation with 18 sacks and also decisively leads in negative sack yards (-125 yrds). LOL.
September 24th, 2017 at 12:16 PM ^
That's remarkable given that one of our games was against an Air Force team that rarely passes at all.
September 24th, 2017 at 12:45 PM ^
at all costs, like the plague.
FWIW, Air Force lost to San Diego State and Rocky Long's 3-3-5 defense on Saturday, 24-28.
Aztecs are 4-0 and are ranked No. 22 (for now). Best start for them since 1977.
Sloshy, rainy field at Air Force for the game. Falcons held to just 33 yards passing, 31 of them on 1 play by backup QB

I looked at TFLs too, and got very nervous when I saw PSU and OSU as top 2. That's going to be really rough on our running game considering how it already struggles.

September 24th, 2017 at 4:22 PM ^
Pitt isn't exactly tearing it up, either. Their only win this season is a 7 point squeaker at home against FCS Youngstown State.
September 24th, 2017 at 1:07 PM ^
I didn't think they'd be great going into the season, and even though they have a lot of TFLs I don't know if they are a great defense. It's still too early for advanced stats to mean much, but they haven't faced great offenses so absolute stats like the NCAA website don't mean that much. Same can be said for Michigan and every other team at this point, though it's much better to be in the top 10 than the bottom 10.
September 24th, 2017 at 3:11 PM ^
That'll happen when you play Georgia State and Akron... not a team to sleep on but they don't exactly instill fear like our defense does.
September 24th, 2017 at 12:01 PM ^
Just learn how to defend those damn bubble screens! I'm assuming we already know how to defend it given Purdue's shitty 2nd half
