But this doesn't seem like they are going for Rutgers. They are going because it's a massive stage.

Maybe I missed it in the article, but I didn't see a single mention for Rutgers.

Not many times you are happy that New York City is getting something. But it's a cool idea imo. I like that Gameday gets out to a new location about once year or so. North Dakota definitely deserved it a few years back.

Here's to Michigan being well represented in the crowd!

the dark underbelly of society.

Cities used to have character (good and bad), and a few still do (especially internationally), but they all seem to be becoming more and more similar.  Rents are high so all the great local bars, restaurants, and shops are being replaced by the same boring corporate chains.

It's depressing to be honest.

This should be interesting given that NY doesn't have a college football team. (As a native I feel pretty comfortable saying that Rutgers doesn't count.)

They usually do this at least once a year and it's always around the third or fourth week of the season. Not a lot of high-profile matchups are on, if any, so you might as well send Gameday to a new place or somewhere obscure. They've gone to Fargo for NDSU once or twice, I know they went to the Harvard-Yale game probably 10 years ago, and I want to say they went to some other high-profile FCS matchup too. Like a Jacksonville St or Montana St game.

NYC is a little odd since it's not what I'd call a college football town. Much bigger pro market, but there are a lot of transplant fans there. Especially Big Ten transplants, so they'll get a big draw.

People complain about ESPN and their agendas, but they won't go the extra step of not watching our games on their networks.  If you want to seriously see ESPN make changes, change the channel or watch the games in person.  If you don't, ESPN will continue doing what they do.

People that live here already avoid Times Square as much as possible, I have a hard time imagining many New Yorkers waking up early on a Saturday to go to this. I'm sure it'll look fine though, if nothing else lots of tourists around who will want to be on TV.

Personally think it's kind of lame to do it here instead of on a campus, but I'll be out of town so it's not like my interest matters either way.

Would've been a good weekend to get back to Iowa City I thought...Penn St. in town for a night game.  I'd say the November 4th matchup with Ohio State in town would've been a good date but that aligns with LSU-Bama, Bedlam, possibly other great matchups.

At least James Madison and Fargo and Kalamazoo had/have ya know, football games going on.

Don't they try to avoid seeing the same team twice in a year (or twice at most)?  PSU vs. Michigan or PSU vs. Ohio State are both infinitely better than Penn State vs. Iowa.

Washington at Colorado or TCU at Okla St seem like the only two matchups that week that are remotely interesting matchups but do those really move the needle?

Yes...but, I guess the present matchups are what matters most while, yes, trying to plan ahead.  Ohio St. - Penn St. is already a Fox, 2:30 game.  Doesn't mean Gameday can't go there, but.  Yes, Michigan-Penn St. will likely be an ABC/ESPN game but we don't know that.  Plus, that will be AT Penn St. anyway, not IC...yes, same team, but that has happened plenty over the years.  Don't underestimate the atmosphere in Iowa CIty for a top 5 opponent in town (not that you are).  It doesn't help Iowa won't be ranked, I understand that, too.  Again, I also fully admit this was MY hope and understand it maybe wasn't likely....NYC though I'm not a fan of, at all.  Glad those in the area can go, though.

which was a special occasion of sorts (opening night), GameDay has not visited the campus of an unranked FBS team since 2013 (USC and Coach Orgeron hosting Stanford).

Iowa City will be a great atmosphere on the 23rd.  Absolutely.  And Iowa is a pretty good team.  But I can see why they passed.  Just wish that if they passed, they were still on some college campus.

Figures this would happen when I'm out of town. Even though I'm not a fan of it, would have been a good time to go meet up with some fellow NYC MGoBloggers before heading to Professor Thom's!

I don't get the hate. True that there's no college games going on in NYC that weekend, but NYC is obviously a special place (even if Times Square really isn't) and in so many years they have never been there. I'm always on board with Gameday going to a new location. Better than going to Columbus or Tuscaloosa or USC for the 100th time.

but imagine if GameDay came for a Michigan game and hosted it in Detroit.

NYC is about 50 miles from Rutgers, but that can take anywhere from 1 -3 hours depending on traffic and people do take the train, but NJ Transit is awful on weekends.

Plus, it's not like NYC is crawling with RU fans. In fact, I've never even seen a Rutgers bar.

First of all, this is not about a Rutgers game (in fact they are @ Nebraska that weekend). You missed that part completely.

Second, Detroit is not New York City. This isn't about hosting in a big city just for the sake of it. It's about hosting in the biggest city in the country, the media and cultural capital. For a one-off event, who cares? One of the draws for Gameday is that it visits fans around the country, on various college campuses. Now they are visiting another segment of fans who they haven't seen before - the ones who moved to New York.

there, I guess they want to try something different. Would rather see it on a college campus Thought there were a couple of good games that Saturday that may have brought gameday, like the Oklahoma State/TCU game or Washington at Colorado.
