it's official - kysre gondrezick to wvu
per the west virginia website, 2nd team all-big ten and 1st team all-freshman women's bballer has transferred. she'd sat out the postseason run to the women's nit for personal reasons.
bummer, she can really play.
or a random collection of letters?
teh nible kitteh managed to miss the caps lock and shift keys apparently
I remember her Uncle Glen playing for the Nuggets back in the 80's. He was a fun character!
Poor guy died young shortly after have a heart transplant.
His younger brother Grant had a cup of coffee in the NBA too before he got into a ton of drug and serious legal issues.
buy her some vowels!
WD can't be happy about this. Big loss for the teaml
Is he someone famous? Did we lose him in the great purge of 2015 with Section 1 and MWolverine?
He'll be back.
They always come back.
This sucks. She was Michigan Miss Basketball in high school. Shame that she left the state entirely.
and what is it about WVU that attracts seemingly all of our outgoing transfers?
I don't know her major, but WVU has a very good sports management program. That could be a draw. Plus I hear WV is wild AND wonderful, so they have that going for them, which is nice.
Doesn't Michigan have a good sports management program? I thought that's what almost lured DeShawn Hand.
naomi davenport signed with us in 2015 but went juco at trinity valley, was named 1st-team juco all-american...and signed with west virginia a couple weeks ago. it's weird.
Common denominator is Chester Nichols, former assistant coach at Michigan (under Barnes Arico), now on the staff at West Virginia. He recruited both Davenport and Gondrezick during his time at Michigan.
i had no idea...not so weird after all.
Players to be named later in the Rich Rod and Beilein trades.
The associate head coach at UWV, Chester Nichols, was an assistant for KBA when she first came to Michigan.
It's true: they do eat squirrel.
I had some last fall at a "squirrel dinner". It tastes like chicken.
Probably addition by subtraction. We didn't miss a beat in the WNIT when she left, but it does leave us pretty think at pt guard next year. She was very talented but plenty of baggage.
What baggage?
1. She would just disappear at times to Kansas to go see her boyfriend, Jayhawks G Josh Jackson. There was more than one occasion where she left the state and coaches did not know.
2. I'm told she showed up to campus in aboslutely terrible form in terms of conditioning, granted, her talent helped make up some of that gap, but still, irresponsible AF.
3. Missing classes and not caring, arguing with KBA and assistants about PT, things of that nature.
Thanks for the insight. I was wondering if his relationship with him had something to do with it. Long distance is tough by itself. Being in a relationship with a one and done must rub off on her somehow, either altering her mentality about school or about the game itself.
By all means, drop bombs all over a kid who's not here to defend herself, without giving reasons why. Please explain yourself...
My friend who is a manager on the women's team hinted at some of that "baggage" she carried and good riddance. Talented, homegrown player but not worth the headaches.
I know we have a couple of posters here who are reasonably familiar with the Women's Basketball team. I'm assuming that when your best player, a Freshman, transfers to another school, that's generally a pretty bad sign for a program's direction.
EDIT: Never mind; I see some posts addressing this immediately before mine.
i hesitate to call her the best player, but the combination of her, katelynn flaherty (a 20 ppg shooting guard, 1st team all-big ten) and hallie thome (really good post scorer and rebounder), plus losses at ohio state and maryland, made us look like conference contenders next year. she's a huge loss.
that said - they really didn't seem to miss her during the post-season, and arrico has definitely shown she can recruit. not uconn-level recruit (nobody does that), but good enough to be a consistent 20-win program.
"they really didn't seem to miss her during the post-season". The post-season was against NIT competetion, not against NCAA tourney level competition. They will definitely miss her against the better teams.
They didn't beat any of the "better teams" they faced during the regular season when Gondrezick was on the team. It's also a fact that the team played better during the WNIT after she left. Barring any injuries to key players, I'd be willing to bet that the team has a better year next season than 2016-17.
Not necessarily, Ohio St, Maryland Louisville and Oklahoma each lost almost their entire freshman classes and they're all top programs. Maryland just had the national freshman of the year transfer out. Two of OSU tranfers were five stars and one a 4 star. Sign of the times.
DKJ dkfjdjkl dke sdjfal;sjkd jkdik lskei!!!
You must spend a lot on tokens.
Well, her boyfriend had all sorts of issues at Kansas,
Can someone shed light on what the "baggage" is? First thing my mind went to was a Brian Cole situation
I'd love to hear more about why the transfer happened too. Did the coaches encourage this? Did she burn bridges, or did they burn bridges? Is she going to a school with a lot of uber talented girls who can compete for a national title?
Maybe that "common denominator" ex-assistant coach who is now at WVU is tampering with Michigan's players. Ya never know...

Yes, she burned bridges. Quitting on your team in the post season is unfogivable. Especially on top of all the other stuff.
Also, Before transferring, she asked to come back and was told to pack sand. Huge headache from the moment she hit campus.

Trust your first instinct. That was how the year started, and it went downhill from there.
Paige Rakers transferred out a couple years ago, and Boogie Brozoski transferred out last year. Now Gondrezick, who was a starter. Leaves a big hole in the lineup for next season.
