decidely OT: Wedding Song Advice
Friends @ MGoBlogosphere,
A good female friend of mine is getting married and she has canvassed my wife and I related to romantic music for the first series of dances at her wedding. I advised Ben Folds "The Luckiest"; please weigh in with opinion/options.
Thanks everyone.
I always thought it'd be funny to start with a serious song, and then drop "Baby Got Back" on them.
Bride has nice boobies. I like boobies.
"Crazy Love" with Van Morrison and Ray Charles.
So money you don't even know it.
avoid "when i think about you i touch myself".
While it might be an accurate assessment of the newlyweds love for each other, its probably in bad taste.
even remember what mine and wives wedding song is... all i know is that it was a country song that made me want to shoot myself... wait all country music makes me want to do that...
David Gray "This year's love" is pretty sweet, it was great in "Girl Next Door".
Please tell her please no choreographed youtube crap......so played.
We went with 2 "Had to be you"-1st movie we saw was Harry met Sally and The Cure "Just like Heaven" to pick up the tempo and get everyone else out on floor.
Trololo
"Book of Love" by Peter Gabriel.
I could not agree more!
i just heard that song like a week ago and was like "if i had to redo it...."
I actually cannot recall the first dance for my Wife and I, but, I do know a couple of the others:
She was adamant that she dance to "I loved her first" for the dance with her dad.
And I had them play, "Oh Yeah", by Yello, for the garter toss. I really, really had to work hard to resist asking everybody if they wanted a gummi bear before I started.
I would recommend The victors. Fast version on the way in, slow version on the way out. Or vice versa. Also, you can probably get that douchebag superfan to come and play the cowbell. Every wedding needs more cowbell.
Our first dance was to Sam Cook's "You Send Me."
We entered the reception to a little tune called "The Victors."
I recommend both.
I don't suppose "I got that Feelin" by DJ Quik would be appropriate?
I am going to play close attention to this thread.
A friend of mine has asked me to sing at her wedding in July, but she doesn't have any particular song(s) in mind. We're going to try to come up with ideas and then talk about it later.
Yes, I'm a singer. Commence making fun of me in 3...2...1...
make fun of that? That actually gives you like, a 2% chance to someday become famous enough to meet Miranda, there.
Yeah...maybe someday I'll be hired to deliver a Singing Valentine to her. And then I'll steal her heart.
But I wouldn't be a complete jerk.
I'd refund the other guy's money.
I hope you are planning some Nordic war ballad.
I don't know any that are appropriate for weddings, unfortunately.
First we find out that gsimms is going the band director route over football. You're a singer. All the mgo-tough guys have their artistic side I guess.
Is gsimms really a band director now? I hadn't heard that. I've been wondering what happened to his blog...
Yeah, he'd been debating it for the last few months. He was offered a Band Director gig and went for it. No longer is he coaching football.
Hail to The Victors followed by Varsity.
Varsity, Varsity, Varsity oh Varsity. Varsity Varsity oh Varsity! (And the Maize and Blue) Varsity, Varsity, Varsity oh Varsity. We have no clothes for you oh Varsity!
"Father Figure," but only for the father/daughter dance.
He's losing his mind... and I'm reaping all the benefits.
I like the movie and I actually really like this song. His song at the end is pretty catchy as well.
THE MAN!!!!
Just be careful when choosing a Ben Folds Five song. You don't want to accidentally play "Brick".
Wish that song was out when I got married. It's got an old school vibe to it, kinda like motown R&B. Dig it.

"Juicy" by the Notorious B.I.G. Not particularly wedding-y, but awesome nonetheless.
Our wedding song was the Lauren Hill cover of Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You."
Although it's been used about a bagillion times, my wife and I danced to "At Last" by Etta James. The twist was that her 13 year old cousin sang it. She's a tiny little girl with as much soul as Ms. James. I have to say it was a memorable moment for us and everyone else too.
I agree that anything with cow bell or "more cow bell" is a good bet, but if you want to dive into the classics nothing is better than the soulful singing of Etta James At Last for a wedding.
That or another Motown song are always good bets.
but I've always liked (as romantic, slower songs) both The Rain Song and Thank You - both Zeppelin songs.
Also - cliched - but wonderful tonight by clapton is a great song
Wonderful Tonight?
From songfacts.com:
Clapton wrote this in 1976 while waiting for his girlfriend (and future wife) Pattie to get ready for a night out. They were going to a Buddy Holly tribute that Paul McCartney put together, and Clapton was in the familiar position of waiting while she tried on clothes.
It sure makes it pretty funny every time you hear it at a wedding.
no... that's exactly what the lyrics are talking about. It's kinda like.. yes, you look great, can we go!?!? but i mean, a wedding is kinda like a huge date... I dunno, its cheesy and i like the song anyways
I was just saying that I find it really funny that most women think it is this syrupy sweet love song when it's really about one of the frustruations that every guy has and can relate to with his wife/girl friend. Mix that in with all the pomp and circumstance of a wedding and it is always brings a smile to my face when they play it!
My friends mom had Kanye West's "Gold Digger" play when she got married. It really summed up their marriage
Wow, that's awkward...and I thought my wedding was rough.
I'd go with this.
Nick Cave's "Into My Arms" is a good one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS4gRmvvDsU
and from the heart, you should check out "Let me be the one" by Rik Emmitt (former Triumph guitarist/singer). Really an awsome wedding song. Work with the hubby to dedicated this song to his new wife. She will be so touched, she may do him right there on the dance floor...
My wife, being the prankster she is, came up with the idea to have ACDC's Highway to Hell play for a minute for our first dance. Everyone laughed their asses off. Then our real first dance song played which was "Don't Want To Miss A Thing" (I believe that's the title) by Aerosmith from the movie soundtrack to Armageddon.
"tonights the night" if she is a virgin.
"Inside of you" from Forgetting Sarah Marshall or "Hey there vagina," by some guy on Youtube.
...and when I see Van Helsing,
I swear to the lord I will slay him.
AH-HA-HA
Blood will drip down his face
when he is decapitated.
AH-HA-HA
Blue Brothers version. Danced with my mom on this and even did the dance from the movie to it. Started out with some generic love-y ballad for abotu 20 seconds, then had the DJ screech the song and switch to the Blues Bros. It was awesome to see my mom's face as the song screeched, then the next thing you heard was "Now we'd like to do a favorite of the horn section, we hope it's one of yours". She smiled. The only thing better as if the stage had been circled in chicken wire.
"Good Things" by the BoDeans.
