Mark Dantonio and "Red-Lock" status.

Submitted by theytookourjobs on

WTF is this supposed to mean and why aren't we making lots of good jokes yet?

Coach Mark Dantonio, when asked Wednesday if anyone who participated in the April 1 scrimmage has been suspended or are no longer with the program, said other players beyond the 15 who did not dress for the game are in what he termed a “red-lock” situation.

“Well, we red-lock people from time to time. We use the term red-lock for various things,” Dantonio said on the Big Ten spring football teleconference. “So yes, there has been. That’s a constant. There is constant people in and out of different situations. I think that is normal.”

Is the new alleged crime of this assumed-innocent single player of the same nature and type as the alleged crime of the other three assumed-innocent players currently being investigated? Because if so, my goodness, that would be really, really bad for MSU, and literally could not come at a worse time.*

*There is no "good time" for this from the victims' perspectives, but in this instance I am only thinking of it from the perspective of the MSU athletic community.

He obviosuly is 1) Not supposed to talk about it and/or 2) is being told to be very vague, but at this point couldn't he just say "no comment" to those questions? I know the media will still ask him, but just say no comment instead of these dumb ass things.

What kind of timeline are we looking at regarding MSU finally disclosing any punishments/suspensions?

wondering more what the timeline is with regard to any charging decisions.  The longer that Ingham County sits on it the more convinced I am becomming that they are not the only ones investigating the program and that what is being investigated is something systemic and intentional.  I think the C word (conspiracy) is in play right now with regard to that investigation and possibly the dreaded "interstate commerce."  Whatever is going on is very, very odd and seemingly has to involve things that have not yet been discussed publicly.

I feel like the silence means it's going to be really, really bad for them or certain powers are scrambling to lessen the damages.

That........... or, local jurisdictions are hesitant to prosecute college players based in their local jurisdiction. Would not be the first time.

to come from the 3 player-ring-circus.  most likley the trouble for those 3 will be from the student/school investigation.

what is Dantonio so worried about?  That sounds like a very unfornunate event but one that is certainly not unprecedented in college athletics.  Why would that necessitate Dantonio staging a media blackout and then finally addressing the media by telling them that whatever is going on within their program rendered football "trivial."  That doesn't compute.

I mean, by not talking about exactly what it is, he's leaving the door open for him to say later, "It was very serious, but we dealt with it in the appropriate manner, and now everyone is eligible again." And no one can argue that it was dealt with appropriately because we don't know what it was. If he did announce what it was, it would be a lot harder to sweep under the rug later - and we all  know that's first choice.

but how does nobody have any information on what is being investigated?  If this was submitted to the Ingham County Prosecutor, the police investigated it, if the police investigated it, there is a police report, if there is a police report, the information should be readily available.  The players involved are not minors and the fact that Michigan State University is also investigating it does not create an independent confidentiality requirement on Ingham County.  Simply put, how is it possible that nobody knows from any official source who is being investigated and what they are being investigated for?

but there is an exemption on disclosure for on-going investigations.   this one obviously is for now, but at some point you'd be able to get all the reports and interviews and see all the gorey details for yourself.
