OTish: End of Mike & Mike coming soon?

Submitted by superstringer on

ESPN brass is transferring "Greenie" to lead a morning newsy/talky TV show.  Unclear if Golic stays on the radio, or if the show gets entirely new talent.  Golic Jr. potentially in running for that.  WOTS is this will happen "sooner rather than later."

Lots of folks here bash M&M a lot, but I also suspect a lot of us listen to them driving to work each morning.  I find myself disagreeing with them (esp Greenie) far more often than nodding in approval.  Golic pretty much is Mr. Obvious.  They are huge Harbaugh fans, esp Greenie.

IIRC, they are in the radio hall of fame, their show has been on for nearly two decades.  It's easy to decry them as uninformed / generic talking heads, but it's still a pretty impressive run they've had.  And a few good moments too (Greenie milking the cow was effing classic).

jokes, coke, hookers, statistics.  and they're both firey enough, could see some on-air fisticuffs like an old WWF broadcast.   it would be beautiful.

The meathead jock vs. nerd trope is so trite and boring. If you know the topic going into a segment you can telegraph more or less how the conversation will go. Give me personalities that have, well, a personality like SVP and Russillo every day over those hacks.

I've been listening to Clay Travis on the way to work in the morning. Now don't get me wrong, he's pretty much a massive douche, but way more entertaining.

I Always liked Mike and Mike. They were entertaining even if I didn't always agree with them. ESPN continues to get worse.. They've already ruined all of their collage football related shows. I can't even watch collage football final anymore.. can't stand the combo of Danny Kanell and Joey Galloway. It's not even just that their opinions are annoying, but they're not even entertaining.. At least Lou Holts would make me laugh every now and then. And collage football live with Paul Finebaum and David Pollock is terrible.

I know a lot of people rip on Mike and Mike but honestly I enjoy their show and always have. I would much rather listen to a professional I know a lot of people rip on Mike and Mike but honestly I enjoy the show and always have. I would much rather listen to a professional fairly unbiased take on sports with good guests them one of the screaming heads that most radio stations throw out there such as Skip Bayless or Colin Coherd. the biggest complaints I have about Mike and Mike is that green tea sticks to to rigid of a schedule with suit so many advertisements and they tend to exaggerate the importance of every single event to fill air time for obvious reasons

Couldn't agree more. Whenever I hear "Greenie", Gottlieb, Stephen A Or Skimp Payless, I turn the channel or station. Sports talk is nothing but Hawt Takes(uh, I did it again) and bullshit schtick. I want news! And to hear bout my teams. Not what color shoes RGIII had on the sideline last Sunday!

As bad as you think they are, just wait until their replacements show up. I'll be reminiscing about the good old Mike and Mike days when they put on some talking head who only goes with the flow and never deviates from the ESPN agenda.

One of my original favorite ESPN shows. I'm gonna miss it. A great morning show and a staple and lifeline of ESPN Radio.
It's a great show, but it should be a shorter show because they do exaggerate every sporting event they ever cover when sometimes it's just clear that there is no interest. Most of the time pointless NFL matchups are the culprit behind this problem. And I won't even start with how bad their routine guests are (Joey Galloway, Danny Kanell) it gets to the point where I have to rely on Jemele Hill to get me to laugh because MSU stupidity. And it's a bad habit to rely on a spartan to keep your list of routine guests intact.
Although otherwise I think it is a very good show. I especially like that Greenie brought at least some fan perspective to that network. Something that in my opinion, it lacks.
I will miss it for sure.

I am a seinfeld fanatic... and can watch the show on loop. Was never into Friends and found it to be formulaic and simplistic from a humor perspective. That said, cannot deny that it was popular and that watching it passibely on occassion isnt the end of the world. Thats how I feel about M&M... its not my regular - but if I am traveling or without a choice, not a huge complaint to listen for a segment or two.

but I always liked them.  I didn't listen every day, but generally enjoyed it when I did.  There are far more odious characters in the sports talk bus.

The forcing of Golic Jr on us was it for me. What credentials does he have, an NFL practice squad? There are a lot of talented, better looking, former NFL Players out there who could have brought more to the table.

Yes, and he's been the best for a long time. Some of these posters must not get him in their market. I think Eisen has done a great job as well, but his cohosts are no Danettes. Honestly, I used to listen to the ESPN and CBS guys but they all annoyed or angered me at some point. I've grown to be annoyed by Jay Mohr because I don't think he knows enough about sports to have a show, but other than him Fox is pretty good. Steve Gorman has a good show as well if you're ever listening to AM radio at 6-9pm. Smart man that knows a lot about a lot. He's a former drummer for The Black Crowes and a Michigan fan as well.

Greenie is bad and Golic is far worse. Nonetheless, before they sack these guys Stephen A. Smith should be shown the door. Never has there been a bigger gas bag on the radio. Well, I forgot about Lou Holtz.

We will send them Mike Valenti . Pair him up with which ever other Mike they care to . Sure it would make that show unlistenable , but it would sure make the after noons better here in Detroit .
