Fire John Beilein

Submitted by ThatGuyCeci on
The time has come. Beilein had a nice run, but the team has lacked intensity and grit for far too long now. Not to mention a severe lack of athleticism. I think Beilein needs to ride off into the sunset and retire. It's time for a new direction. When you hire new assistants for specific purposes and you actually regress in those areas, the writing is on the wall. Thanks for your services Beilein. But your team is no longer watchable.

"I'm curious if this indefensible thing that happened 12 hours ago can be defended, so I'm going to call out individuals to see if they can defend it." It was a 20 point loss to Illinois. I'm not sure why you think calling me out for supporting Beilein is going to be constructive, but I'll take a stab at it. Losing to Illinois by 20 is shitty. I haven't called for Beilein to be fired yet and I'm not going to, but it is getting tougher to watch this team. I had a lot of optimism going into this season (I know, fuck me, right?) because I thought Walton and Irvin being completely healthy and seniors, they would take a step forward and lead the team. They look like they've taken a step backwards and are both hurting the team as much as they help. When your two senior leaders play shitty, it's going to be tough to win. I thought they would be better based on Beilein's success developing players and I was wrong. I'm sorry I won't give up on th team like half the posters who say the can't fathom watching this team, but I do have some optimism that it will be addition by subtraction without Walton and Irvin. We won the B10 with Novak, Douglas, and Morgan, so I'm not sure what has happened since then but those aren't hugely talented kids. Wagner and Wilson are talented enough to get a win at Illinois some but for some reason, the team blows right now and it sucks. Leadership is probably the main problem, and that falls on Beilein and the seniors. I am not calling for a midsession firing but Beilein's seat is definitely getting hotter. I would love for him to retire on his own but if he has another season like this this one (I hope we turn it around, but without Walton and Irvin playing well, we are in for more of this this year), I don't see him sticking around.

He built up so much good will with me that I'll never call for his head. But, I don't watch most games anymore, whereas just a few years ago I never missed.

Same...although I can't blame the people do. It is what it is at this point.

I hope he goes out on a high note, retires, and stays around the program like Carr did (when he came back...not when he left and was undermining Rich Rod).

Beilein's a great man, a Michigan man. I'd love to see him have some type of ambassador role - but I wouldn't be mad if he wasn't on the sideline after this year. I wish him ALL the best. Such a classy man - we just need a better basketball team.

I think I've watched one game start to finish this season, maybe two, and I have access to all of the channels they play on now.  A few years back, I'd carve time out of my evening, spend 20 minutes sometimes finding a stream and watch every second of every game.  They're just not fun to watch, win or lose.

That's what happens when you're not any good, lol.

Sure they get hot in stretches...but it's every now and again. They always have to work so damn hard for every basket - they never get out and run and they don't play defense well enough to force turnovers so they CAN run.

Every game is like watching Illinois play Purdue in football.

It is crazy and sad to me that we have gotten to this point. Beilein is a great guy, and a really good coach. But things are not working. He has to be on the hot seat. In my opinion though I would give him one more year and see if he can fix things. I think he has earned one extra year that other coaches shouldn't get.

The other thing to factor in is that Beilein does not want to cheat to get recruits, and it is impossible to recruit at an elite level without cheating. Look at Izzo, he has decided he even has to dive into the dirty water if he wants to be competative.

Is everybody cheating except Beilein?

Is the entire top half of the Big Ten cheating?  Is the entire Top 25 cheating?

The NCAA is made up of its constituent universities.  If none of those universities want to follow the NCAA's rules then they have de-facto nullified the NCAA and it should just be ignored.

At some point, you can't be the only one swimming against the tide.  If the entire college basketball community ignores the "rules" then those aren't really the rules.

It's like driving 55 mph on I-75.  That's what is posted, but it's not really the rule.

M-Dog

Because nobody followed it.  It was de-facto nullified by the citizens that make up the municipalities that write the laws.

It was too restrictive, so they changed it.

Not being able to pay the players some spending money is the equivalent of a 55 mph sign on I-75.

Yeah, I kinda thought this was supposed to be the breakthru year and that the previous couple of years were an anomaly.

Now it's starting to look like 2013 / 2014 was the anomaly, fueled by 2 or 3 special players that turned out to be magic unicorns and haven't appeared since.

I find it really hard to believe that Beilein can't find one or two top 100 kids every year that he likes and who he aggressively goes after. I think he targets the wrong players and had an antiquated recruiting philosophy. Recruiting is sales. If you want something (or someone) you have aggressively go after it. Not every kid has a perfect jump shot and comes from a good family. Go after guys that can play and help you win. Teach more than just ball movement and creating shots. Unless you have a dominant PG like Trey Burke, it just doesn't work. You end up settling for too many 3's with no enough defense, bad combination.

Took us to the brink of a national title, and a second Final Four, won 2 Big Ten titles, so yeah, they're pretty much in the same line. Best football coaches: Yost, Crisler, Bo, Carr (I do think there's an argument for Carr over Bo, but that's for a different thread). Best Basketball coaches: Orr, Strack, then Beilein or Fisher.

Both Carr and Beilein started to see a slip in play when they hit 60. Carr simply had the recruiting to get that year in 2006 where we didn't play anyone good until the final 2 games, which doesn't happen in basketball.

Good guy, thanks for the memories. Time to upgrade to today's expectations. Patience is no longer a virtue. Harbaugh has set the standard.

I can empathize with the frustration.  We should be better.  A few years ago, we were all singing Beilein's praises because we had some great players.  I still think he's a great coach, but maybe it's time for a change.  Torn.

They can save Beilein another year. In my opinion....he lost me with his inability to recruit Detroit effectively. He is a ghost in those gyms. He is a ghost in Chicago. The head coach of Michigan should be a MAInSTAY in both of those cities and highly competitive in recruiting. Beilein isn't and it shows. We're almost always out manned. He had a run and struck gold with a few players. He is a good man and has done well. It's simply time.

Exactly.

We have the advantages in basketball recruiting that SEC schools have in football recruiting.

We are a major program in the middle of a talent-rich area.

We don't have to scrounge around for under the radar players from Indiana and Germany.

You can win the players in our back yard who should be predisposed to come to Michigan the way 5-star football recruits are predisposed to come to Georgia.

You just have to make a presence.

it's really the whole state of Michigan.  In-state recruits to sign up with Michigan since Beilein was hired: Jon Horford, Carlton Brundidge, Jordan Morgan, Derrick Walton, Austin Davis.  That's it.

And it's not just an issue of MSU scooping up all the good players.  Here are the 247 composite four star players from MI who have left the state in Beilein's tenure: Donnovan Kirk (Miami), Trent Lockett (ASU), Amir Williams (OSU), Jalen Reynolds (Xavier), Jordan Hare (Rhode Island), James Young (UK), Wesley Clark (Mizzou), Monte Morris (Iowa St), EC Matthews (Rhode Island), Jaylen Johnson (L'Ville), Edmond Sumner (Xavier), Eric Davis (Texas), Josh Jackson (KU)

Probably wasn't realistic to think we could get James Young or Josh Jackson, but Morris, Matthews and Sumner are all NBA-caliber players who went to non-blue blood programs.

I think he's quoting my post about 8 month back

I ran into a prominent retired Chicago high school basketball coach and I asked him his thoughts about Michigan (Michigan tried recruiting some of his players many years ago). Among other things, he said Chicago kids think Michigan plays "white boy basketball". He thinks Michigan will likely never get a prominent recruit out of Chicago playing that way (unless we get dirty). We have no presence and/or respect with Chicago recruits and JB doesn't do anything about it.

Nick Stauskas sure as hell doesn't play white boy basketball. Novak completely does but every team needs one sharp shooter that hustles and is undersized, or else you may as well call it "Kentucky" or the "NBA". McGary was 50/50. Had some decent swagger with his dancing, but his moves weren't that great. On the other hand the absolute confidence and bravado his dancing took on resembled greatness.

had guys that played these roles but were better than the three recent players mentioned even Stauskus who I was never a big fan of because his defense wasn't very good.

What I meant to say that they don't start not that they would never play but a lot of people seem to agree anyway.  They would be reserves except Novak who would not be any team from 87-95.  I'm not sure that the younger folks realize how good those teams were...and they were mostly local kids from Detroit, Saginaw, Flint that loved Michigan before they got here. Not kids from Indiana or Ohio who came here because it was the best program that would take them and they fit the shooters team mold.

Also, IMO, Indiana and Northeast Prep Schools HS mostly = WBBB and that seems to be where Beilein is most comfortable.  I used to love him but I have lost faith. THis year is an abomination and it isn't going to get any better until he's gone.
