Kirk Herbstreit is calling the Iowa-Michigan game

Gardner took over the next week.

Iowa did not suck last year, they made it to the B1G title game. They were not a top 8 team but they sure as hell didn't suck, and they don't suck this year either. The play the same crap Iowa football they always do, and the last 2 night games there I can remember are Denard playing as a freshman(disaster) and the Bellomy game(disaster) It would be an accomplishment to blow them out in Iowa on saturday night.

Nebraska. I'm inclined to agree with most of the rest.

that Michigan had a 100% chance of beating Michigan State on Gameday.

He's seems less passionate...more glib and corporate...

What I would give for ESPN to call up Andy Staples every Sunday to get a run down of his thoughts.

Very biased
November 6th, 2016 at 6:53 PM ^
Herbstreit recent comments annoy me...
@KirkHerbstreit @ClemsonFB @UMichFootball @UW_Football @CollegeGameDay doesn't PSU, (w)isky, and Colorado mean something for Michigan?
Of course it does. But if you think Penn St and CU are same teams today as they were when UM played them I disagree.
@KirkHerbstreit Why because they look better now. Ever think it was UM that made them look bad?
Great thing is your team gets the opportunity to play the games and prove how great they are. We don't have to play "what if".
November 6th, 2016 at 6:58 PM ^
i do think ped state, CU and wisky are better teams than when we played (and so are we), and he's right, we do get to figure this out on the field. win in c-bus, no problems, no excuses.

And a big reason why they improved was because they lost to Michigan. Especially Penn State -- that offense and especially the QB learned a lot from that loss.
Michigan schools you, you have two choices. You can learn from it and get better, or you can whine about it, pretend it was closer than it was, and not get better. Exhibit A: Penn State; Exhibit B: Michigan State.

Then why doesn't he use that same logic for OSU's win over Oklahoma?
November 6th, 2016 at 7:53 PM ^
ohio has had our number for the better part of a decade (and if it's longer, well, i'm purposefully forgetting that) and they have been an excellent team since the turn of the century. as devoid of emotion as i can be, the road to the championship goes through c-bus, even if they have a loss. it's just that we have more than a glimmer of hope to beat them, which is better than most of the recent years. win and we end the discussion. lose there, and we will have had a very good year but it wouldn't be an elite year.
November 6th, 2016 at 7:57 PM ^
Ok, but that doesn't explain why he feels the need to qualify our wins over current top 15 teams by saying that they're playing better now than when we played them, but not doing the same for OSU's signature win over Oklahoma, who is clearly playing much better now than when OSU played them.
November 6th, 2016 at 8:03 PM ^
Also, why doesn't he feel the need to comment on how we may be better now too...I mean Speight sure as hell looks better than he did against Colorado (particularly after that hit he took) and so if we are just going to arbitrarily say teams are better than earlier in the year...I would say we are too.
Maybe now Speight sees that blitz from the colorado game (if we played today) and there is no fumble-six, he doesn't get injured and that game is totally different.
Also, I don't see him saying things like this about other teams either, so it's pretty transparent.
November 6th, 2016 at 8:07 PM ^
This is true, it's just interesting that it's only Michigan that is apparently the beneficiary of playing certain teams at certain times. No mention of Alabama playing USC at the beginning of the year when they started 1-3 (now on a 4 game winning streak), or OSU playing Oklahoma when they started 1-2 (undefeated since then), or Clemson playing Auburn before they had figured out their QB situation, etc.

is that ped state really has started to play well, far beyond my idea of what their season would look like after a 49-10 pasting by us. wisconsin has been very solid. CU has had a very good year. i think the difference is that those teams really have been playing well and we squashed them, excepting a closer contest with wiscy. i haven't studied ohio's opponents, but do their better, ranked opponents show that same level of improvement? if not, then herbie's comment is a fair one.
November 6th, 2016 at 8:59 PM ^
Oklahoma is playing much better now than when OSU played them. Remember they had lost to Houston prior to losing to OSU, so they obviously weren't playing well at the time. Other than that, they played Penn State and Wisconsin. Penn State was healthier when they played OSU, but I think Wisconsin was healthier when they played us. Either way, it's a stupid comment by Herbstreit, pretty much every good team is playing much better now than earlier in the year so that comment could be made about anyone, but Herbstreit chooses to just say it about us. I don't usually view him as a Michigan hater but this year is starting to change my view on that. Seems like he was quite content with Michigan being bad, and now has switched to denial mode now that they're competing with OSU for the Big Ten crown again.
November 6th, 2016 at 9:51 PM ^
Ehhh, it's kind of bullshit to me. I mean, we've handed just about every team we've played their worst loss this year save probably Michigan State. At some point it's not a bunch of random coincidences in a row where all these teams are just having off days - it's a pattern, and it's because we're really fucking good this year. It's well past time to embrace the hype for the team.
November 6th, 2016 at 6:59 PM ^
For some reason all these pundits discrediting Michigan's wins over PSU,CU, and Wisky annoy the hell out of me.
I can't comprehend how a team can be fundamently different later in the season if they: 1. Are using the exact same players 2. Have the same coaching staff and 3. Are running basically the same scheme.
The only team that may be playing "better football" is PSU, but I guess instead of getting curb-stomped by UM, maybe UM only beats them by 17 today (not sure how this makes a difference).
CU - same scheme. They put points on UM quick (looking good), but then got blown out.
UW - Beat LSU earlier in the year. If you want to play the dumb game, then they also came out of a blowout win vs. top-10 Sparty. Lost to UM.
The teams were playing the exact same football earlier in the year, but like all preseason polls it's almost impossible to distinguish teams from the top 5 down.
November 6th, 2016 at 7:05 PM ^
And we dominated those teams. So what if they are "better" now? It just means we beat them by 2 TDs instead of 4 TDs.

November 6th, 2016 at 7:29 PM ^
I agree with him about PSU - they were missing some key players. But I don't think CU and UW are that different now than they were when we played them.
November 7th, 2016 at 9:29 AM ^
Herbie is right about this. It's a new era . . . we'll get to prove it on the field.
We are so shell-shocked from years of polls and BCS bowls that we still take too seriously some media guy's opinion of our season. Because that used to matter.
But it really does not matter any more what Herbstriet thinks. We'll get to prove it on the field.
November 6th, 2016 at 6:53 PM ^
As long as he's not calling a game with OSU in it I'm good. He's pretty decent except when he goes into bucknut slappy mode.
