with the experience and schedule, is UM's best shot at a MNC for the next 2-3 years. Great talent and experience at key positions, mostly defense; two typcially tough teams looking quite vulnerable in OSU and sparty; Peppers; etc. Do you share that opinion?

1) Ambry Thomas is one of the two players I'm most excited about landing, but I don't see his name mentioned much in weekly posts, how hard are we recruiting him, visits etc and how is he trending? 2) what do our recent offers during the bye week say about how we feel about our current recruits. Saw that a few db offers and OL offers went out? 3) and yes defense, not seeing much on dl and linebackers where do we stand?

It's now halfway through the college football season and several big name college teams are simply imploding. As we saw from Donovan Peoples-Jones' visit to Michigan State this weekend, top end recruits seem less likely to put up with rebuilding, coaching instability or simply a program that may be heading the wrong direction. What recruits that Michigan was trending the wrong way on at the beginning of the season might now be in play because of other team's on-field failures?

Alright, I finally found this thread (hopefully) in time.

I'm a bit concerned and a whole lot of curious about our recruiting at the safety position. Are there more names here we haven't heard much about? We seem rather thin there and from my untrained eye it seems we arent recruiting many options. Outside of Woods & JKP is there anyone the staff is really pushing for?

You previously mentioned that there is some sort of point system for getting Chrystal ball predictions right and the length of time of the prediction

Is a ranking of such points and writers available to review and is it broken down into regions, conferences and schools.

This may help one consider how likely a prediction will come true - whether the predictor is lucky or good. Thank you.

I feel like we have a few big time silent commits. If a highly ranked WR and OL were to give a verbal and bring some excitement/urgency, how quickly could this class take shape? I understand a lot of young men enjoy the process and want to commit at a post season special event. Once one or two dominos fall, could 80 or 90% of the class fill in in short order?

How does OL recruiting shake out in February?

Any inside word on Harbaugh's visit to Antioch to see Najee Harris?

When does Jedrick Wills decide?

Who are the main 2016 recruiting candidates for Brown's SLB, the hybrid-space defender role? Obviously, we need a Pepper cracking apprentice. We lika da Pepper.

The Les Miles rumor mill is a shitshow and will be for a while. Hypothetically, if he takes over ND or Purdue or some sort of northern-ish school, do you see UM (and the rest of the heavyweights) sweating a little?

There are still a bunch of questions I have.

  1. I'm curious on the scouting of talent, and how that happens. How involved are Harbaugh, Drevno, and Brown? Is that position coaches? Is it GA guys? Are there scouts who regularly head out around the country to ID talent? Is this something the recruiting coordinator heads up?
  2. Who makes the decision on who to offer? And what kind of offer is given? (Commitable, non-commitable.) My sense is that some guys they would take a commitment from any of the week and twice on Sunday. Others, they slow play. The only way fans get a sense of this is from how highly ranked a player is.
  3. In past years, I remember Brian talking a lot about the "floor" and "ceiling" of a player. The sense of the floor was that if a player was polished, and ready to go, he had a pretty high floor. The sense of the ceilling was that if a player had very strong physical attributes (size, speed, strength, etc.), but was lacking in coaching, he had a higher ceiling, but wasn't ready to start. Do you have any feel for how the floor and ceiling of a player affect their recruitment.

Thanks much, as always, for what you are doing for the fanbase.

You mentioned the "fab 5" for the o-line. Juwan Howard seemed to be the moving force for the basketball fab 5 to get together. Is there a "Juwan Howard" in this fold that is trying to get the o-line together? If so, who and how hard is he working on the other 4?

It seems like Harbaugh and Brown may value certain attributes or skills more than other coaches or scouting services. Is there anyone who could end up going Blue (2017 or beyond) who might offer more for this particular team and coaching staff than their rankings and interest lists suggest?

I have a theory:
With Rodriguez, Michigan was not recruiting as well overall, but certainly not recruiting the traditional big ten type of players. PSU has been down, ND as well with exception of one good season; OSU even had a little trouble before Meyer.

Did this benefit the tier 2 teams in the Big Ten, especially MSU? In other words, with the traditional powers in the Midwest all having down years here and there over the past decade, did that leave more/better players in mix for the MSUs and Iowas?

What does the term “dual-threat QB” actually mean in recruiting nowadays?  It seems to mean the recruit who can run well but is less proficient as a passer.  If the recruit is equally proficient in both running and passing, he’s labeled a “TRUE dual threat.”  If he can pass, but is less proficient in the mobility department, he’s termed a pro-style QB or pocket passer. Thus the term “dual threat QB” by itself seems to be a misnomer and misleading.  Why not simplify the terminology for the reader by describing recruits as run first, pass first, or dual threat—with "dual threat" taking on the meaning that it intuitively should?  I think I already know the answer--it's just always been that way--but it is unsatisfying.

Hey Steve, seems like we're recruiting a lot of DE types and not true D tackles. Are the coaches in on any big time true D Tackles or true interior D lineman instead of DE's that project to the interior

Leatherwood, Browning, and Holmes, which one or two does Michigan have the best shot for and why? It's pretty amazing so many top 15(!) players are seriously considering Michigan.

Hi Steve,

I was just wondering about decommitments. People talked about the Swenson situation looking bad for Michigan last year. Do you think the Lassater and Dunaway decommitments have more to do with that, or do you think it's more a sign of how good this class is going to be?

Thanks

I never understood the preference of WRs. OSU seems to get excellent WRs even though they run a spread offense that does not always seem to rely on great techniques from WRs. Should our pro style offense give us an advantage in recruiting top notch WRs such as the ones we are targeting in this class? Sorry if this was asked before or if I am way off on how this position works in a spread offense. Thanks as always.

Hi Steve,

the loss of Solomon got me thinking about how powerful it would be/is to go after your biggest competitions most important recruits. Not necessarily to flip - but simply to sour them if possible through whatever means possible.  I'm specifically interested in what you may have learned or intuited about underhanded recruiting tactics that have the simple goal of denying targeted recruits to specific teams.  I know the story about the wayward BBQ visit thank-you-letter to Solomon.  It just seems there is more to it in this case, and that this sort of thing must happen more often generally, and is probably becoming more sophisticated all the time through bogus social media and other approaches.

With all these potential 5 star recruits interested in Michigan, how important is it that we beat OSU this year? There are guys committed to Alabama that we are trying to get. If I have a chance to go to Alabama, a proven winner or Michigan, a great team but one that can't seem to beat OSU... I think it's imperative that we beat OSU. Your thoughts.

Would love to understand what a recruit's visit is like.  Who do they meet with, where do they eat, what unique things does Michigan do compared to other schools?

Hi Steve,

I'm curious if the recruits notice the number of first year players who see the field this year and the potential impact that they (the recruits) could have next year if they come to michigan.  Not a lot of red shirts on this team.

Of our 2017 committed recruits who is having a good year and who is having a not so good year so far?

How common is it for a coaching staff to go on recruiting trips during the bye week like our guys just did?  I don't remember this ever happening before.

In your opinion who is the best recruiting assistant/position coach on the Michigan staff?

Will every high profile recruit in the universe be at The Game this year?
