Very OT- Looking for a TV series to start watching, need some "mgoadvice"

Submitted by trueblue262 on

I think it's safe to say we all share a love for Michigan Football, and Michigan in general around here. But I noticed a lot of "TV talk" as well. With Game Of Thrones ending for a while now, just thought I'd ask the board for some help finding a new show to watch to hold me over for the next couple months while we wait for football season to kick in.

Maybe a Top 3 from everybody?

1. Seinfeld

2. King of Queens

3. It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia

4. Blue Bloods

5. Studio C (Youtube, BYUtv)

6. Random Acts

7. Amazing Race

Ok most of these are either old and you just watch the reruns or they are out of season right now...but all very good nonetheless

How much are you looking to watch?

If you're looking for a large number of episodes:

1) The Wire (HBO) - hands down the suggestion I will always give if you have not seen it.

Everything else: Homeland (Showtime - admittedly, early seasons are way better), The Shield (FX), Lost (ABC).

If you're looking for something shorter:

HBO: Band of Brothers (~10 eps), Generation Kill (~10 eps), Deadwood (2 seasons),

Showtime: Billions (2016)

TNT: Murder in the First (2+ seasons so far)

ESPN: OJ Made in America (~12 hours)

AMC: The Night Manager (~12 hours)

Amazon Prime: All or Nothing (~10 hours) - if you like NFL football.

Also the HBO Miniseries "The Night Of" is also just about to start, which looks like it will be good.

Veep and Silicon Valley are both hilarious but you're probably already watching those if you're an HBO guy. Also, watch the 30 for 30 ESPN thing on OJ - 5 part, it's amazing. HBO is starting up a series called "The Night Of", the pilot is already out and it was really good. Would give that one a look for sure.

(Yes I have a massive HBO bias and think regular cable is largely shit)

Check out Bloodline on Netflix. They just came out with the second season. It's honestly one of the better shows I've watched.

Walking Dead is also excellent, but well represented on this thread.

The 100.

It's on Netflix. Very good show. Post-apocalyptic teen survival series. Thoughtful, suspenseful, brutal.

watching The 100 with my ten year old son who is right in that "tweener" age for TV and shows, getting too old for cartoons but not quite ready for "real" shows and movies I guess - we'll call it the Marvel Superhero stage. (From a violence perspective this is the furthest we have pushed the envelope but he seemed good with it).  In any case, it was actually really good.  I only started watching it to have an "adult like" show I could watch him but I am really glad I did.  It is a lot better than I expected.

Someone above mentioned All or Nothing, a really good, multi-episode documentary about the Arizona Cardinals' most recent season. It's on Amazon Prime only.

I don't even really like NFL all that much, but it is a pretty good look at the reality of a professional team. They had pretty extensive access to all the players, coaches, families, etc., but kept it from being overly dramatic or personal about any individual players, if that makes sense.

Most everything has been mentioned- Peaky Blinders, Bloodline, Americans, Mr. Robot all great.  Older shows like Breaking Bad, Dexter, Nurse Jackie, Weeds etc all great. Only current show I'm watching now GoT is over is Ray Donavan.  If you haven't seen The Sopranos, ignore all suggestions and leave work now and watch immediately.

If you want to be entertained for a weekend, I really enjoyed Mad Dogs on Amazon. Only one season and they're not making anymore, but I thought it was great.

Read through first 50 comments and only saw it repped here. So, so good. Intricate plot, fantastic acting, intense violence, and hot women. All from rural PA with an ex con becoming a vigilante justice sheriff, organized crime, and the Amish. Yup, Amish. Just finished fourth and final season, ~40 episodes. You could be done before the bbq at the big house!

Billions is really entertaining.
Orange is the new Black is a very good series.
House of Cards started out gangbusters for me but then sort of......pffffft
I didn't watch Breaking Bad until well after the series had concluded. Awesome. Maybe the gold standard.

What have you already watched, and what have you enjoyed.

Without that information, I'm going to list The Simpsons (available on FX Now), because it's the greatest show of all time. But most people already know that. I mean, Seinfeld, Curb your Enthusiasm, Bob's Burgers, King of the Hill, South Park, Fawlty Towers, 30 Rock, Parks and Rec, The Office, Arrested Development, Trailer Park Boys, all highly recommended comedies.

Breaking Bad, Lost (which I don't think is even really that great in retrospect but at the time they did a great job making you addicted to it and binge watching a million episodes in a row), the first few seasons of Dexter (don't bother after that), Luther, Sherlock, X-Files (lots of filler episodes though), Louie, Mad Men, all dramas I really liked.

Then there are the documentary series. Anything David Attenborough or Ken Burns is great. Judge Judy, those are great shows.

I'm not a TV junkie though unfortunately. I spend more time on movies as far as watching a screen. Lots of great looking shows that I just haven't seen (including GoT, The Americans, Mr. Robot, The Wire, The Sopranos, House of Cards, all great looking that I just haven't watched. So that shows my ignorance on the issue.

By the way, if you're looking for historically great, imdb now has the top 250 tv series of all time rated as well. LINK

I won't repost the other stuff people have listed, but I will toss in a new one I hope is getting enough viewers to get renewed.

Preacher is on AMC, first season, only about 6 episodes so far.  It's the first show in a while that has me checking the calendar looking forward to when the next episode is on.

I admit, it's weird, but just the right amount of it. Vampires, Angels, Demons, Murder and all kinds of craziness.

Justified

Just finishing this up. I realize I'm late to this one but hey that's what Netflix and Amazon are for right?

Awesome show. Raylan Givens is the epitome of cool.

Doctor who is pretty great if you want to get your geek on. Season 3 of the new series is where it starts getting really good, but the first 2 seasons are worth watching as well.

1.) Friday Night Lights 2.) It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia 3.) Animal Kingdom---- it's a new series on TNT, I think it's based on an Austrailian movie. Decent watch though

I got that one started and it's become one of those shows that is intriguing enough to want to figure out "what happens next" or "where it's going" or "how it will end," but overall isn't top-notch. Other shows I put in that category in my opinion are The Leftovers and Mr. Robot.

I haven't scanned through all the suggestions above so I don't know if anyone's mentioned Orphan Black, but Tatyana Maslany's performances as multiple clones is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen on screen. Once that show is over (its final season is in 2017) I hope she continues on to greater stardom, gets a Daisy Ridley-style role in a blockbuster franchise or something. She's special.

I personally am on the Netflix original series train now.  Watching Peaky Blinders season 3, Orange is the New Black - season 4, and Bloodline. EDIT: also forgot I just watched Aziz's "Master of None" - I liked it a lot more than I thought, especially if you like dryer type humor.  It may not be for some I can understand.

If you want a great under the radar dry comedy and have HBO, try the show "Getting On."  I still think Veep is the best comedy on TV now, though.

FX has put out some gems.  Fargo is amazing.  The Americans great too.

I love AMC shows.  An under the radar one is called Hault and Catch Fire.  It's great if you like character driven shows such as Mad Men .

the show "Suits" on USA is also addicting.  The women on that show are smoke-shows
